Unless / IF Not

Unless means except if. We use unless to make an exception to something we say. Unless is often used in warnings, instead of unless it is possible to say if …. not.
a. Theresa can’t eat unless her mother lets her.
b. You can’t earn more money unless you work harder.
c. You can’t understand the lesson unless you listen carefully.

More Examples:

If you aren’t tired, let’s go out.
Let’s go out unless you are tired.

I will call the police or you will leave immediately.
Unless you leave immediately, I will call the police.

Ali must study harder or she won’t pass the final exam.
Ali won’t pass the final exam unless she studies harder.

If Not / Unless Conversion

You will stay home if you don’t come with us.
You will stay home unless you come with us.

You can’t win the lottery if you don’t buy a ticket dad.
You can’t win the lottery unless you buy a ticket dad.

I will trash your sandwich if you don’t want to eat it.
I will trash the sandwich unless you want eat it.

I am not going to the party if Carol is not going.
I am not going to the party unless Carol is going.

Unless เป็นคำเชื่อม มีความหมายเช่นเดียวกับ if…not. คือ ถ้า…ไม่ หรือ ยกเว้นถ้า… จึงสามารถใช้แทน if…not ในประโยคเงื่อนไขเชิงปฏิเสธได้ทุกรูปแบบ โดยที่ if และ unless จะตามด้วย Present Tense, Past Tense หรือ Past Perfect Tense

หลักการใช้ Unless

1. ประโยคที่ตามหลัง unless จะเป็นอนุประโยคหรือประโยคย่อย (Subordinate clause) ซึ่งต้องมีประโยคหลัก (Main clause) ที่ทำให้ประโยคสมบูรณ์ เช่น

I’m going to leave here unless he comes.
(ฉันจะออกไปจากที่นี่ ถ้าเขาไม่มา)
I’m going to leave here. = ประโยคหลัก (Main clause)
he comes = อนุประโยค (Subordinate clause)

2. ถ้า unless มาก่อนประโยคหลักต้องมีเครื่องหมาย comma (,) ขั้นระหว่างประโยคหลักและประโยคย่อย แต่ถ้าประโยคหลักเป็นประโยคแรกไม่ต้องใช้ comma เช่น

Unless you come now, I’m going to leave without you.
(ถ้าคุณไม่มาตอนนี้ ฉันจะออกไปโดยไม่มีคุณ)

I can’t help you unless you tell the truth.
(ฉันไม่สามารถช่วยคุณได้ ถ้าคุณไม่พูดความจริง)

3. unless เป็นคำแสดงเงื่อนไข (Conditional Word) เช่นเดียวกับ if จึงไม่ใช้ will หรือ would ในประโยคย่อยที่ตามหลัง unless

4. สามารถใช้ unless แทน if…not ในประโยคเงื่อนไขเชิงปฏิเสธได้ทุกรูปแบบ โดยตัด if…not ออกแล้วนำ unless มาไว้หน้าประโยค ส่วนคำอื่นในประโยคคงเดิม เช่น

If you not pay now, we can’t guarantee you a ticket. = Unless you pay now, we can’t guarantee you a ticket.
(ถ้าคุณไม่จ่ายตอนนี้ พวกเราก็ไม่รับประกันว่าคุณจะได้ตั๋วนะ)

5. ไม่ใช้ unless ในเรื่องที่เรารู้ว่าเป็นจริงอยู่แล้ว เช่น

Tom will drive if Mark can’t. (ทอมจะขับรถถ้ามาร์กขับไม่ได้)
เรารู้อยู่แล้วว่ามาร์กขับไม่ได้ ดังนั้นจะไม่พูดว่า Tom will drive unless Alex can’t.

ฉะนั้นในโครงสร้างของประโยคย่อยที่ตามหลัง unless จะเป็นประโยคบอกเล่าเสมอโดยมีความหมายเป็นปฏิเสธ เช่น

I won’t go to the party unless Tom goes with me.
(ฉันจะไม่ไปงานปาร์ตี้ ถ้าทอมไม่ไปกับฉัน)

6. ใช้ unless เมื่อพูดถึงเรื่องที่จะเกิดหรือไม่เกิดขึ้นก็ได้ เช่น

Unless you work hard, I’m not going to pay you.
(ถ้าคุณไม่ตั้งใจทำงาน ฉันจะไม่จ่ายเงินคุณ) / อีกฝ่ายอาจจะตั้งใจหรือไม่ตั้งใจทำงานก็ได้ มันยังไม่เกิดขึ้น

การใช้ Tense กับ Unless

Unless + Present Tense  (Unless + S + V.1) ใช้เมื่อพูดเรื่องเกี่ยวกับอนาคต
I can’t buy a deluxe car unless I save more money.
(ฉันไม่สามารถซื้อรถหรูได้ ถ้าฉันไม่เก็บออมเงินให้มาก ๆ)

I’ll go out jogging unless it rains.
(ฉันจะออกไปวิ่งจ๊อกกิ้ง ถ้าฝนไม่ตก)

Unless + Past Tense (Unless + S + V.2)
They threatened to kill him unless he gave them the money.
(พวกมันขู่ว่าจะฆ่าเขา ถ้าเขาไม่ให้เงินพวกมัน)

Unless he was working late, he would be here.
(ถ้าเขาไม่ทำงานช้า เขาก็อยู่ที่นี่แล้ว)

I would not have bought these unless they were on sale.
(ฉันจะไม่ซื้อของเหล่านี้หรอกถ้าพวกมันไม่ลดราคา)

Unless + Past Perfect Tense (Unless + S + had + V.3)
Unless the train had broken down, we wouldn’t have transferred to a bus.
(ถ้ารถไฟไม่เสีย พวกเราก็ไม่เปลี่ยนไปรถบัสหรอก)

Tom wouldn’t have taken chemistry unless he had needed it.
(ทอมจะไม่ลงเรียนวิชาเคมี ถ้าเขาไม่ต้องการ)
