Use
We use Simple Past if we give past events in the order in which they occured. However, when we look back from a certain time in the past to tell what had happened before, we use Past Perfect.
Normal order in the past or looking back to an event before a certain time in the past?
Do you just want to tell what happened some time in the past or do you want to tell what had happened before/up to a certain time in the past?

- Before her sixth birthday, Jane had never been to the zoo.

*Note: “After” is only used as a signal word for Past Perfect if it is followed by a subject + verb, meaning that one action had been completed before another action began (the new action is in Simple Past).
- Example:
- After the family
had had
breakfast, they went to the zoo.
However, if “after” is followed by object + subject + verb, the verb belongs to the new action and is therefore in Simple Past.
- Example:
- After her visit to the zoo, Jane was exhausted.
More exceptions with signal words
When
Depending on the situation, “when” can be used with Simple Past or Past Perfect. Compare the following examples:
- Example:
- When Jane saw the elephants, she was amazed. (at the same time)
- When Jane
had seen
the elephants, she wanted to see the giraffes. (second action happened after the first action had been completed)
- When Jane went to see the elephants, she
had already seen
the lions. (second action had been completed when the first action took place)
Before
“Before” as well can either be used with Simple Past or Past Perfect. If the action after “before” is a new action, use Simple Past. If the action after “before” started (and was not completed) before a certain time in the past, use Past Perfect. Compare the following examples:

had read
a lot about elephants before she went to the zoo.
- Jane went to the zoo
before she had finished
reading her new book about elephants.

*after และ before ทำหน้าที่ได้ทั้งคำบุพบท (preposition) คำเชื่อม (conjunction) และคำวิเศษณ์ (adverb)
*after และ before มีความหมายต่างกัน กล่าวคือ after หมายถึง later than … (ภายหลัง, หลังจาก) ส่วน before หมายถึง earlier than … (ก่อน)
หลักการใช้
1. after และ before เป็นคำบุพบทบอกเวลา (prepositions of time) มีความหมายดังกล่าวมาข้างต้น

After the meal, we felt sick.
หลังจากทานอาหารเสร็จ พวกเรารู้สึกไม่ค่อยสบาย
Before 1940, few people owned a telephone.
ก่อนปี 1940 แทบไม่มีใครเลยที่เป็นเจ้าของโทรศัพท์
2. ตำแหน่งนอง after-clause กับ before – clause สามารถวางได้ทั้งในตำแหน่งต้นหรือตำแหน่งท้ายประโยค
ตัวอย่าง
The airport police searched all the passengers after the plane landed.
=After the plane landed, the airport police searched all the passengers.
หลังจากเครื่องบินแล่นลงจอด ตำรวจสนามบินได้ตรวจผู้โดยสารทุกคน We cleaned the house before our friends arrived.
=Before our friends arrived, we cleaned the house.
ก่อนที่เพื่อนของเรามาถึง เราได้meความสะอาดบ้าน
3. ในกรณีที่เกิดเหตุการณ์ในอดีต 2 อย่าง แต่ต่างช่วงเวลากันให้ใช้Past Perfect Tense (ประกอบด้วย had + past participle) กับ เหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นก่อน และใช้ Past Simple Tense (ประกอบด้วย past form of verb) กับเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นภายหลัง
ตัวอย่าง
The airport police searched all the passengers after the plane
had landed.
ตำรวจสนามบินได้ทำการตรวจค้นผู้โดยสารทุกคน หลังจากที่เครื่องบินได้
ร่อนลงจอดเรียบร้อยแล้ว
The plane had landed. เป็นเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นก่อน
The airport police searched all the passengers.
เป็นเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นภายหลัง
We had cleaned the house before my friends arrived.
พากเราได้ทำความสะอาดบ้าน ก่อนเพื่อนๆ จะได้มาถึง
We had cleaned the house. เป็นเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นก่อน
my friends arrived เป็นเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นภายหลัง
4. ในกรณีที่เป็นเหตุการณ์ที่คาดว่าจะเกิดในอนาคต ให้ใช้รูป Present Simple Tense กับอนุประโยคท้ายคำว่า after และ before
ตัวอย่าง
I’ll see you again before you return home.
ผมจะพบคุณอีกครั้งก่อนที่คุณจะกลับบ้าน
The mother bird will continue to feed her children after they
leave the nest.
แม่นกจะเริ่มให้อาหารลูกๆ หลังจากที่พวกมันออกจากรัง
5. after และ before เมื่อทำหน้าที่คำวิเศษณ์บอกเวลา (adverb of time) คำว่า after หมายถึง “after this; after that” แปลว่า หลังจากนี้, หลังจากนั้น ส่วน before หมายลึง “before this ; before that ; before now” แปลว่า ก่อนหน้านี้, ก่อนหน้านั้น

At last the war was over, and not long after, the soldiers returned home.
=At last the war was over, and not long after the war was over, the soldiers returned home.
ในท้ายที่สุด สงครามก็ยุติ และไม่นานหลังจากสงครามยุติ ทหารก็ได้
