Present Perfect Continuous

The Present Perfect Continuous uses two auxiliary verbs together with a main verb.

In this lesson we look at the structure and use of the Present Perfect Continuous tense, as well as the use of for and since, followed by a quiz to check your understanding.

Note that continuous tenses are also called progressive tenses. So the Present Perfect Continuous tense is sometimes called the Present Perfect Progressive tense.

How do we make the Present Perfect Continuous tense?

The structure of the Present Perfect Continuous tense is:

The first auxiliary (have) is conjugated in the Present Simple: have, has

The second auxiliary (be) is invariable in past participle form: been

The main verb is invariable in present participle form: -ing

For negative sentences we insert not after the first auxiliary verb.

For question sentences, we exchange the subject and first auxiliary verb.

Contraction with Present Perfect Continuous

When we use the Present Perfect Continuous tense in speaking, we often contract the subject and the first auxiliary verb. We also sometimes do this in informal writing.

In negative sentences, we may contract the first auxiliary verb and “not”:

• I haven’t been playing tennis.
• It hasn’t been snowing.

How do we use the Present Perfect Continuous tense?

This tense is called the Present Perfect Continuous tense. There is usually a connection with the present or now.

We use the Present Perfect Continuous to talk about:

• past action recently-stopped
• past action still-continuing

Present Perfect Continuous for past action just stopped

We use the Present Perfect Continuous tense to talk about action that started in the past and stopped recently. There is usually a result now.

I’m tired because I‘ve been running.

Present Perfect Continuous for past action continuing now

We use the Present Perfect Continuous tense to talk about action that started in the past and is continuing now. This is often used with for or since.

I have been reading for 2 hours.

• I have been reading for 2 hours. (I am still reading now.)
• We‘ve been studying since 9 o’clock. (We’re still studying now.)
• How long have you been learning English? (You are still learning now.)
• We have not been smoking. (And we are not smoking now.)

For and Since with Present Perfect Continuous tense

We often use for and since with perfect tenses:

• We use for to talk about a period of time: three hours, two months, one decade
• We use since to talk about a point in past time: 9 o’clock, 1st January, Monday

Look at these example sentences using for and since with the Present Perfect Continuous tense:

• I have been studying for three hours.
• I have been watching TV since 7pm.
• Tara hasn’t been feeling well for two weeks.
• Tara hasn’t been visiting us since March.
• He has been playing football for a long time.
• He has been living in Bangkok since he left school.

For can be used with all tenses. Since is usually used with perfect tenses only.

Thì hiện tại hoàn thành tiếp diễn có cấu trúc là sự kết hợp giữa thì hiện tại hoàn thành và thì tiếp diễn.

1. Cấu trúc:

 

Đây là thì vừa mang nghĩa là hành động hoàn tất (Hoàn thành) vừa chỉ sự liên tục của hành động (Tiếp diễn) nên cấu trúc của nó sẽ là kết hợp giữa cấu trúc của thì hiện tại hoàn thành và cấu trúc của thì tiếp diễn.

Have / Has + Been + Ving

Has: Dùng với chủ ngữ là She, He, It, Danh từ số ít và danh từ không đếm được.
Have: Dùng với chủ ngữ là I, You, We, They, Danh từ ở số nhiều.

Chúng ta để ý thấy rằng, Have / Has + Been là phần của thì hiện tại hoàn thành (Be => Been) và Been + Ving là định dạng của thì tiếp diễn (Be =>been)

Thì hiện tại hoàn thành tiếp diễn có 3 câu cơ bản sau:

(+) S + has/have + been + Ving.

(–) S + has/have + not + been + Ving.

(?) Has/Have + S + been + Ving?

Yes, S + has/have.

No, S + has/have + not.

 

2. Cách sử dụng:

Thì hiện tại hoàn thành tiếp diễn khá giống với thì hiện tại hoàn thành, đều dùng để diễn tả một hành động bắt đầu diễn ra trong quá khứ và vẫn còn xảy ra ở hiện tại. Tuy nhiên, thì hiện tại hoàn thành tiếp diễn nhấn mạnh tính liên tục, kéo dài của hành động trong khoảng hời gian nào đó (Hành động tiếp diễn), còn thì hiện tại hoàn thành chỉ ra kết quả của hành động.

 

 

Sau đây là các cách dùng cụ thể:

 

– Hành động đang diễn tiến trong một khoảng thời gian

Chúng ta sử dụng thì hiện tại hoàn thành tiếp diễn để miêu tả hành động, tình huống đã bắt đầu và kéo dài liên tục hoặc vừa mới dừng lại.

I’m sorry that I’m late. Have you been waiting long?

– Thường dùng với 2 giới từ “since” hoặc “for”.

I have been waiting for him for 5 hours but he hasn’t not arrived yet.

– Thì hiện tại hoàn thành tiếp diễn với các từ sau: all day, all her/his lifetime, all day long, all the morning/afternoon

It has been raining all day. I wonder when it stops.

– Rút ra một kết luận: Chúng ta cũng dùng thì này để chỉ ra rằng chúng ta đưa ra một kết luận dựa theo kết quả ở hiện tại.

I’m hot because I have been running.
Your eyes are red. Have you been crying.

 

Dưới đây là các trường hợp phân biệt cách dùng của hai thì này.

– Các động từ như Live, Work, Learn, Study, lie, Sleep, Teach, Stand, Sit, Wait được dùng ở cả hai thì mà không có sự khác biệt về ý nghĩa.

He has worked at this factory for 10 years
He has been working at this factory for 10 years.

– Hành động đang liên tục và Hành động hoàn tất

I’ve learned all the irregular verbs all afternoon.(Chỉ ra kết quả của hành động)
I’ve been learning all the irregular verbs all afternoon (Nhấn mạnh tính liên tục)

– How long vs How much /many

Tina has been typing the report since 2 o’clock.(How long)
She has typed twelve pages of the report since 2 o’clock (how many)

– Repeated Action: Hành động lặp đi lặp lại

Thì hiện tại hoàn thành cũng có cách dùng là miêu tả hành động lặp đi lặp lại, tuy nhiên ở thì hiện tại hoàn thành tiếp diễn vẫn được dùng nếu chúng ta không muốn đến bao lâu thì hành động đó lặp lại.

I’ve been playing tennis a lot recently (Không nói về tầng suất xuất hiện hoặc lặp lại của hành động)

I’ve played tennis three times this week.(Đề cập đến tầng suất lặp lại)
