เรื่องการแปลให้ได้รับสาระตรงตามต้นฉบับ ถ้านักแปลไปเจอหนังสือสมัยใหม่ที่นักเขียนฝรั่งสติเฟื่องใช้ similes and metaphors แบบหลุดโลก เราว่าลงเอยนักแปลก็ต้อง “โกหกตอlaa มากพอสมควร เพราะในโลกของภาษาอังกฤษมันต้องมีข้อความภาษาอังกฤษตั้งมากมายที่แปลเป็นไทยให้ซื่อสัตย์ต่อต้นฉบับแล้วมันออกมาเป็น absolute nonsense”

อันนี้ยากขึ้นมาอีก คุณจะแปลยังไงให้คนไทยขำได้ ถ้าคุณซื่อสัตย์ต่อต้นฉบับ โดยไม่ตอlaa เลย?

Sometimes you have to believe that all English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. In what other language do people drive in a parkway and park in a driveway? In what other language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? In what other language do privates eat in the general mess and generals eat in the private mess? In what other language do people ship by truck and send cargo by ship? In what other language can your nose run and your feet smell?
How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same and a bad licking and a good licking be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? How can sharp speech and blunt speech be the same and quite a lot and quite a few the same, while overlook and oversee are opposites? How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell the next? How can the expressions “What’s going on?” and “What’s coming off?” mean exactly the same thing?!?

If button and unbutton and tie and untie are opposites, why are loosen and unloosen and ravel and unravel the same? If bad is the opposite of good, hard the opposite of soft, and up the opposite of down, why are badly and goodly, hardly and softy, and upright and downright not opposing pairs? If harmless actions are the opposite of harmful nonactions, why are shameful and shameless behavior the same and pricey objects less expensive than priceless ones.

If appropriate and inappropriate remarks and passable and impassable mountain trails are opposites, why are flammable and inflammable materials, heritable and inheritable property, and passive and impassive people the same and valuable objects less treasured than invaluable ones? If uplift is the same as lift up, why are upset and set up opposite in meaning? Why are pertinent and impertinent, canny and uncanny, and famous and infamous neither opposites nor the same? How can raise and raze and reckless and wreckless be opposites when each pair contains the same sound?

Why is it that when the sun or the moon or the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible; that when I clip a coupon from a newspaper I separate it, but when I clip a coupon to a newspaper, I fasten it; and that when I wind up my watch, I start it, but when I wind up this essay, I shall end it?

นักเขียนฝรั่งสมัยใหม่ใช้ลีลาการเขียนแบบนี้เยอะมากๆ หากนักแปลนั่งบริกรรมดีๆ พยายามสรรหาถ้อยคำที่เหมาะในภาษาไทยมาเรียบเรียงคำแปลให้เลิศเลอ perfect ถ้าสำนักพิมพ์กำหนด deadline ที่เฉียบขาดและงานเร่งมากๆ นักแปลก็แปลให้มันออกมาดีๆไม่สำเร็จเพราะเวลาไม่พอ แต่ถ้าสำนักพิมพ์ยอมให้เวลามากขึ้นนักแปลผลิตงานแปลดีๆออกมาได้แต่นักแปลก็ลงเอยกินแกลบ นั่นก็เพราะว่าใช้เวลานานเกินไปในการแปลหนังสือ 1 เล่มจนหมุนเงินไม่ทัน (ซึ่งเราก็เคยตกอยู่ในสภาพเช่นนี้ตอนแปลหนังสือ จนต้องหยุดแปลหนังสือกลางคัน แล้วไปรับจ้างแปลเอกสารสลับฉากเพื่อให้ได้เงินมาบ้าง จนบรรณาธิการบริหารของสำนักพิมพ์ต้องมาตามตัวเราถึงที่เพราะกลัวพิมพ์หนังสือของเขาไม่ทัน)

และนั่นก็เป็นสาเหตุที่เราเลิกแปลหนังสือ เพราะเริ่มเจอหนังสือแบบ similes and metaphors หลุดโลก มากขึ้นเรื่อยๆ ตอนอ่านหาความบันเทิงมันสนุก แต่ตอนแปลมันไม่สนุกหรอก

จริงๆแล้วเราเรียนการแปลด้วยตัวเองมาหลายปีเพราะเราหลงผิดคิดจะแปลหนังสือเพื่อเอาเงินไปซื้อหนังสือภาษาอังกฤษราคาแพงๆมาอ่านหาความรู้เรื่อยๆ (คือแปลไปก็ได้ความรู้ไป) แต่เหตุการณ์ในโลกมันพลิกผันไป แบบว่าหนังสือแนวที่เราอยากอ่านอยากแปลสำนักพิมพ์ไม่อยากตีพิมพ์ หนังสือแนวที่เราอยากอ่านอยากแปลตอนนี้เราไม่ต้องซื้อแพงๆเพราะหา download ของฟรีได้ นอกจากนี้เรายังเรียนรู้จากสื่ออื่นๆอีกตั้งมากมายเช่น videos (สำหรับสอนศาสตร์ต่างๆ) และ computer software อีกทั้งกระบวนการเรียนรู้การแปลของเราเกิดจากการไปฝึกงานและทำงานแปลจริงๆในบริษัทแปลเอกสาร เราโดนจับให้แปลหนังสือราชการกับภาษากฎหมาย และเอกสารพวกโครงการต่่างๆค่อนข้างมาก แปลๆไปส่วนใหญ่เป็นการแปลไทยเป็นอังกฤษ แล้วพบว่า

“คนไทยเป็นจำนวนมากต้องการสื่ออะไรอย่างหนึ่งแต่เขียนอีกอย่างหนึ่ง”

ในกระบวนการเรียนรู้การแปลของเราในช่วงเวลานานกว่า 15 ปี ทักษะที่เราเรียนรู้มากที่สุดก็คือ paraphrase กับการใช้ google ค้นข้อมูล นั่นก็เพราะว่าเวลาแปลไทยเป็นอังกฤษเราเจอเอกสารภาษาไทยที่เขียนแล้วอ่านไม่ค่อยรู้เรื่องหรือเขียนแบบให้ข้อมูลผิดๆเยอะมากที่เราจำเป็นต้องแก้ไขให้ลูกค้า (ลูกค้าส่วนใหญ่พอใจที่เราแก้ไขให้ เพราะคำแปลภาษาอังกฤษมันออกมาอ่านรู้เรื่องมากกว่า)

ดังนั้นเมื่อพิจารณาทางหนีที่ไล่ดู “เรื่องความคุ้มทุนของเวลาที่หมดไปกับการแปล” เราเห็นว่าเราพลิกแพลงเอาทักษะของเราไปค้นข้อมูลจากหนังสือต่างประเทศหลายๆเล่มหรือจากแหล่งข้อมูลดีๆอย่างอื่นอย่างเช่น websites และ videos (ที่สอนศาสตร์ต่างๆ) เป็นต้น แล้วเก็บเกี่ยวความรู้เอามาเขียนหนังสือขายมันจะได้เงินมากกว่าแปลหนังสือเป็นอาชีพ เนื่องจากค่าลิขสิทธิ์ที่สำนักพิมพ์จ่ายเราเป็นค่าเขียนหนังสือมันมากกว่าค่าแปลหนังสือ แต่พอจะขยับจะเขียนหนังสือให้มันจบๆเล่มซะทีก็เผอิญมีลูกค้ารายเก่าๆหรือลูกค้าจรรายใหม่ๆมาจ้างเราแปลเอกสารจากไทยเป็นอังกฤษ ซึ่งมันได้เงินทันที (ไม่เหมือนเขียนหนังสือแล้วยังไม่รู้ว่าจะมีสำนักพิมพ์ที่ไหนรับไปตีพิมพ์) แล้วแปลเอกสารจากไทยเป็นอังกฤษมันก็มีค่าตอบแทนสูงกว่าแปลหนังสืออังกฤษเป็นไทยตั้งหลายเท่า

เราก็เลยยังคงติดอยู่ในวังน้ำวนของอาชีพการแปลนั่นแหละ ยังไม่ได้หลุดออกไปเป็นนักเขียนเต็มตัวสักที
