หลังจากที่เราได้ศึกษาวิธีการใช้คำเชื่อมประโยคต่างๆมาจนหมดสิ้นแล้ว ก็ถึงเวลาที่เราจะมา เรียนภาษาอังกฤษ จากแบบฝึกหัดกันแล้ว แบบฝึกหัดชุดนี้มี 20 ข้อ ให้เราลองทำดูว่าเราสามารถทำได้ถูกกี่ข้อ ถ้าทำถูกต้องหมดก็ถือว่า เราเข้าใจวิธีการใช้คำเชื่อมเหล่านี้ได้ดีแล้ว แต่อย่าลืมว่า ถ้าเราทำแบบฝึกหัดได้ในครั้งนี้ ครั้งต่อๆไปเราก็ต้องจดจำมันให้ได้ด้วย หรือต้องมาอ่านทบทวนซ้ำบ่อยๆ เพื่อให้ซึมซับเข้าสู่สมองของเรา จะได้จำได้ไม่รู้ลืม ถ้าจำได้แค่วันสองวัน การ เรียนภาษาอังกฤษ ของเราจะถือว่า ไม่บรรลุผลหรอกน่ะครับ

Although / in spite of / despite
After although we use a subject + verb:
• Although it rained a lot, we enjoyed our holiday.
• I didn’t get the job although I had all the necessary qualifications.
Compare the meaning of although and because:
• We went out although it was raining.
• We didn’t go out because it was raining.
After in spite of or despite, we use a noun, a pronoun (this/that/what etc.) or –ing:
• In spite of the rain, we enjoyed our holiday.
• I didn’t get the job in spite of having all the necessary qualifications.
• She wasn’t well, but in spite of this she went to work.
• In spite of what I said yesterday, I still love you.
Despite is the same as in spite of. Note that we say ‘in spite of, but despite (without ‘of’):
• She wasn’t well, but despite this she went to work, (not ‘despite of this’)
You can say ‘in spite of the fact (that)…’ and ‘despite the fact (that)…’:
I didn’t get the job in spite of the fact that I had all the necessary qualifications
I didn’t get the job despite the fact (that) I had all the necessary qualifications.
Compare in spite of and because of:
• We went out in spite of the rain, (or …despite the rain.)
• We didn’t go out because of the rain.
Compare although and in spite of / despite:
• Although the traffic was bad. I arrived on time. (not in spite of the traffic was bad)
In spite of the traffic, I arrived on time. (not in spite of the traffic was bad)
I couldn’t sleep although I was very tired (not despite I was tired)
I couldn’t sleep despite being very tired (not despite I was tired)
Complete the sentences with although / in spite of / because / because of.

Despite and in spite of are used to show a conflict. They are both more common in writing than in speaking. Despite is a little more formal than in spite of.
The only difference between despite and in spite of is the word ‘in,’ which comes before spite and the word ‘of,’ which follows spite.
Despite/in spite of + a noun
We usually use in spite of and despite with a noun:
I enjoy my job despite the low salary.
I enjoy my job in spite of the low salary.
Despite/ in spite of + the fact that
We can use in spite of and despite with a subject and verb if we include the expression ‘the fact that’.
Despite the fact that I worked very hard, I didn’t manage to get the promotion.
In spite of the fact that I worked very hard, I didn’t manage to get the promotion.
Despite the fact that my parents didn’t have much money, they managed to send me to university.
In spite of the fact that my parents didn’t have much money, they managed to send me to university.
Don’t forget that you’ll need a comma if you start the sentence with despite or in spite of.
Despite/ in spite of + a gerund (ing form)
We can also use despite and in spite of with gerunds:
Despite feeling terribly sick, I went to work every day that week.
In spite of feeling terribly sick, I went to work every day that week.
Despite having all the necessary qualifications, I didn’t get the job.
In spite of having all the necessary qualifications, I didn’t get the job.
