คำว่า was / were คือ ช่องที่ 2 ของ verb to be จะว่าไปแล้วก็คือการแปลงร่าครับ
เนื่องจากว่ามันเป็นช่องที่ 2 ของ is / am / are ดังนั้นหลักการใช้ก็จะเหมือนกันทุกประการ ต่างกันแค่ใช้เล่าเรื่องราวในอดีต แค่นั้นเอง

ประโยคบอกเล่า ของ Was / Were
He was a student last year but he became a teacher last month.
เขาเป็นนักเรียนเมื่อปีที่แล้ว แต่เขากลายเป็นครูเมื่อเดือนที่แล้ว
They were at school yesterday. They studied math all day.
พวกเขาอยู่ที่โรงเรียนเมื่อวานนี้ พวกเขาเรียนคณิตทั้งวัน
ประโยคปฏิเสธ ของ Was / Were
He wasn’t at school yesterday.
เขาไม่ได้อยู่ที่โรงเรียนเมื่อวานนี้
They weren’t angry.
พวกเขาไม่ได้โกรธ
เนื่องจากว่า was / were เป็นช่องที่ 2 ของ is / am / are
หลักการใช้ในประโยคบอกเล่า ปฏิเสธ จึงเหมือนกันทุกประการ จึงไม่ขออธิบายขยายความมาก

กริยาช่อง 2 ของ can คือ could แต่ไม่ได้แปลว่าสามารถอย่างเดียว คำว่า can หรือ could ก็ดี ถ้าใช้ต่างบริบทกันความหมายก็จะเปลี่ยนไปทันที ถ้ายังแปลว่าสามารถอยู่แล้วละก้อ..รับรองว่าไปคนละทางเลย
กริยาช่อง 2 ของ can
กริยาช่อง 2 ของ can ก็คือ could นั่นเอง เอาไว้บอกเล่าความสามารถที่ทำได้ ตั้งแต้ครั้งในอดีต ว่าสมัยตอนนั้นสามารถทำอะไรได้บ้าง ที่พอจะอวดชาวโลกได้ และปัจจุบันก็ยังทำได้อยู่นะ ความหมายหลักๆคือ สามารถ แต่เวลาแปลมักแปลว่า ทำเป็น ทำได้ เช่น
- I could swim when I was five.
ฉันว่ายน้ำเป็นตั้งแต่อายุ 5 ขวบ
- I could ride a bike when I was 3 years old.
ฉันขี่จักรยานเป็นตั้งแต่อายุ 3 ขวบ
- I coud play the piano when I was in grade 5.
ฉันเล่นเปียโนเป็นตั้งแต่ฉันอยู่ ป. 5
ส่วนคำว่า Can บอกความสามารถในปัจจุบัน ณ ตอนนี้ว่าทำอะไรได้บ้าง แค่นั้น ไม่ต้องการอวดว่าทำเป็นตั้งแต่เมื่อไหร่
- I can swim.
ฉันว่ายน้ำเป็น
- I can ride a bike.
ฉันขี่จักรยานเป็น
- I can play the piano.
ฉันเล่นเปียโนเป็นตั้ง
นอกจากนี้แล้ว Can และ Could สามารถใช้เป็นประโยคร้องขอได้ด้วย
- Can I have your name, please?
Could I have your name, please?
ดิฉันขอทราบชื่อของคุณด้วยค่ะ (คุณชื่ออะไรคะ)
