o that: (เพื่อว่า, เผื่อว่า)
ตามด้วยประโยค (Clause) เสมอ
กริยาของประโยคที่ตามหลัง so that จะต้องอยู่ในรูป may หรือ might หรือ should + Verb ช่องที่ 1 เช่น
I stepped a side “so that” she “might” go in. (ผมก้าวไปข้าง ๆ เพื่อว่าหล่อนจะได้เข้าไปข้างในได้)
ถ้าต้องการเปลี่ยนประโยค Complex Sentence ที่มี so that มาเชื่อม ไปเป็น Simple Sentence
ก็สามารถทำได้โดยใช้ in order to หรือ so as to + Verb ช่องที่ 1 ได้ เช่น
He gave up smoking “in order to (หรือ so as to)” get better. (เขาเลิกบุหรี่ก็เพื่อให้อาการ (ของเขา) ดีขึ้น)

so……that: (เสีย…จนกระทั่ง)
คำที่อยู่ระหว่าง so…that ได้แก่ Adjective (คุณศัพท์) หรือ Adverb (กริยาวิเศษณ์) เท่านั้น
แต่บางครั้งหลัง Adjective จะมีนามมาร่วมด้วยก็ได้ มีโครงสร้างดังนี้ so + [Adverb/Adjective/Adj+Noun] + that เช่น
Wichai runs “so” fast “that” I cannot overtake him.

such…..that: (เสีย…จน)
คำที่อยู่ระหว่าง such…that ได้แก่ นาม โดยมี Adjective มาขยายอยู่ข้างหน้า มีโครงสร้างดังนี้
แบบ A: such a + Adjective + นามเอกพจน์นับได้ + that เช่น
He is “such” a good boy “that” everyone likes him. (เขาเป็นเด็กดีเสียจนทุก ๆ คนชอบเขา)
such a + Adjective + นามเอกพจน์นับได้ ในแบบ A นั้นจะใช้ so…that มาแทนก็ได้ แต่ต้องเขียนโครงสร้างใหม่ คือ ให้ a มาอยู่ชิดกับนามเอกพจน์ที่นับได้ เป็นดังนี้ so + Adjective + a + นามเอกพจน์นับได้ + that เช่น
He is “so” good “a” boy “that” I like him.
(= He is “such a” good boy “that” I like him.)
แบบ B: such + [Adjective+นามพหูพจน์ / Adjective+นามนับไม่ได้] + that เช่น
They are  “such” heavy boxes “that” I can hardly lift them up.

in order to, so as to: (เพื่อที่จะ)
ตามด้วย Infinitive (กริยาช่องที่ 1) ทั้งนี้เพื่อเชื่อมเนื้อความ 2 ประโยคให้เป็นหนึ่งประโยค เช่น
I shall go on working late tonight “so as to” be free tomorrow.
(= I shall go on working late tonight. I shall be free tomorrow.)
(ผมจะทำงานต่อไปจนดึกเพื่อที่จะว่าง (ไม่ต้องทำงาน) ในวันพรุ่งนี้)

in order that: (เพื่อว่า)
in order that ต่างจาก in order to ตรงที่ว่า in order to ตามด้วย infinitive ส่วน in order that ตามด้วยประโยค (Clause) ตลอดไป
Children go to school “in order that” they may learn things.
(= Children go to school “in order to” learn things.)

lest: (มีความหมายเท่ากับ so that…not แปลว่า “เพื่อจะได้ไม่”)
ประโยคที่ตามหลัง lest ต้องใช้ should (แทน may, might) ตลอดไป และใช้ได้กับทุกบุรุษอีกด้วย เช่น
He works harder “lest” he should (may) fail. (เขาทำงานหนักขึ้น เพื่อจะได้ไม่ประสบความล้มเหลว)

as long as, so long as: (เมื่อ, ถ้า)
สันธานคู่ (Correlative Conjunction) ตัวนี้ นิยมวางไว้ต้นประโยคมากกว่ากลางประโยค และเมื่อจบประโยคข้างหน้าต้องใส่เครื่องหมาย Comma (,) ทันที เช่น
“As (so) long as” you come here in time, you will see her. (ถ้าคุณมาที่นี่ทันเวลา คุณจะพบเธอแน่)

if: (ถ้า, หาก)
คำนี้เมื่อเชื่อมประโยคจะวางไว้ต้นหรือกลางประโยคทั้งสองก็ได้
ถ้าวางไว้ต้นประโยค เมื่อจบประโยคท่อนแรกให้ใส่ Comma (,) เช่น
“If” the weather holds good, we shall stay another week.
แต่ถ้าวาง if ไว้กลางประโยคทั้งสอง ไม่ต้อง Comma เช่น
We shall stay here another week “if” the weather holds good.

unless: (ถ้า…ไม่, เว้นเสียแต่ว่า…ไม่) มีความหมายเท่ากับ if…not
เมื่อนำมาเชื่อมจะวางไว้ต้นหรือกลางประโยคก็ได้ เช่น
We shall go “unless” it rains.
หรือ “Unless” it rains, we shall go.
(= We shall go “if” it “does not” rain.)
ระวัง! อย่าใช้ not ในประโยคที่ตามหลัง unless เพราะ unless มีความหมายเป็นปฏิเสธ (negative) อยู่ในตัวแล้ว เช่น
ผิด: “Unless” he “does not study” harder, he will fail in the exam.
ถูก: “Unless” he “studies” harder, he will fail in the exam.

but that: (ถ้า…ไม่) มีความหมายเหมือนกับ if…not
เมื่อนำมาเชื่อมความ จะวางไว้ต้นหรือกลางประโยคก็ได้ แต่ต้องตามหลังด้วยประโยค
และอย่าใช้ not ในประโยคที่ตามหลัง but that เพราะ but that มีความหมายเป็นปฏิเสธอยู่แล้ว เช่น
She would have fallen “but that” I caught her. (เธอคงจะตกลงไปแล้ว ถ้าผมไม่ได้จับเธอไว้)
“But that” he is in debt, he would enter priesthood. (ถ้าเขาไม่เป็นหนี้ เขาก็คงบวช)
จำอีก: “but for + Noun” แปลว่า “ถ้า…ไม่” เหมือนกับ but that
ต่างกันแต่ว่า หลัง but that เป็นประโยค ส่วนหลัง but for เป็นนาม
“But for” my help, he should have failed last year. (ถ้าผมไม่ช่วย เขาก็คงสอบตกไปแล้วปีกลายนี้)
(= “But that” I helped him, he should have failed last year.)

inasmuch as: (เพราะ, ด้วยเหตุที่) มีความหมายเท่ากับ because
จะวางไว้ต้นหรือกลางประโยคทั้งสองที่ไปเชื่อมก็ได้ เช่น
He yielded to the invader, “inasmuch as” his army was thoroughly defeated.
(เขายอมแพ้ต่อผู้มารุกราน (ข้าศึก) เพราะกองทัพของเขาถูกตีอย่างพ่ายแพ้ไป)
“Inasmuch as” he is sick, he had better go to hospital. (เพราะเขาไม่สบาย เขาก็ควรจะไปโรงพยาบาลดีกว่า)

or และ or else
or: (หรือ) ใช้เชื่อมคำ (words), วลี (phrases), ประโยค (clauses) ที่แสดงการเลือกอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง เช่น
เชื่อมคำ: Is it sweet “or” sour? (เปรี้ยวหรือหวาน?)
เชื่อมวลี: Is he at home “or” in the office? (เขาอยู่บ้านหรือว่าไปทำงาน?)
เชื่อมประโยค: You look after the house “or” go to work. (คุณเฝ้าบ้านหรือมิฉะนั้นก็ไปทำงาน (เลือกเอา))
ส่วน or else: (หรือมิฉะนั้น) มีความหมายเท่ากับ otherwise นิยมใช้เชื่อมประโยค (Clause) มากกว่าคำหรือวลี เช่น
I must clean it, “or else” it will be rusty. (ผมจะต้องทำความสะอาด มิฉะนั้นมันจะขึ้นสนิม)

till และ until: (จนกระทั่ง, จนกว่า)
until มักใช้กับประโยค (Clause) ที่ไปนำหน้าอีกประโยคหนึ่ง
พูดให้ง่ายเข้าก็คือ วางไว้ต้นประโยค ใช้ until (มากกว่า till ว่าอย่างงั้นเถอะ) เช่น
“Until” you told me, I had known nothing about him. (ผมไม่เคยได้รู้อะไรเกี่ยวกับเขาเลย จนกระทั่งคุณบอกผม)
till นิยมวางไว้กลางประโยคเสียมากกว่า (แต่จะใช้ until ก็ได้) เช่น
He had never written to me “till (until)” he returned.

provided และ providing: (ถ้าหากว่า) คำทั้งสองก็เป็นสันธานอันหนึ่ง มีหน้าที่เชื่อมประโยคดุจดั่งสันธานทั่ว ๆ ไป
แต่เวลานำมาใช้ provided จะตามด้วย that เสมอ
ส่วน providing ไม่ต้องมี that เช่น
We shall go “provided that” it does not rain. (พวกเราจะไปถ้าหากว่าฝนไม่ตก)
Amy will go “providing” her friend can go together. (เอมี่จะไปถ้าหากว่าเพื่อนของเธอก็ไปด้วยกันได้)

supposing: (ถ้า, สมมติว่า)
คำนี้นิยมไว้ต้นของประโยคหน้า หรือใช้กับ Clause หน้า เช่น
“Supposing” you win the government lottery, what do you buy? (สมมติว่าคุณถูกสลากกินแบ่งรัฐบาล คุณจะซื้ออะไรบ้าง?)

since: (ตั้งแต่, เพราะว่า, เนื่องจากว่า)
ถ้าแปลว่า “ตั้งแต่” ใช้เชื่อมระหว่างประโยค Present Perfect (Subject + have/has + V3) หรือ Present Simple (Subject + V1(ประฐานเอกพจน์เติมs)) กับ Past Simple (Subject + V2(เติมedบ้าง,ผันบ้าง)) เช่น
He has worked hard “since” his father died. (Present Perfect, Past Simple)
ถ้าแปลว่า “เพราะว่า, เนื่องจากว่า” ให้วางไว้หน้า Clause ของประโยคแรก เช่น
“Since” he doesn’t learn English, he can’t speak it. (เนื่องจาก (เพราะ) เขาไม่ได้เรียนภาษาอังกฤษ เขาจึงพูดไม่ได้)

as soon as: (เมื่อ = when)
แต่ใช้ความหมายฉับพลันกว่า when เช่น
I shall go back “as soon as” he arrives.
อนึ่ง จะวาง as soon as ไว้หน้า Clause แรกก็ได้ แต่ต้องใส่ Comma เมื่อจบความของประโยคแรก เช่น
“As soon as” he arrives, I will tell him.

in case: (ในกรณีที่, เพราะ)
ตามด้วยประโยค (Clause)
วิธีใช้ก็เช่นเดียวกับ so that, for fear that คือ จะต้องตามด้วย may, might, should, can, could ตัวใดตัวหนึ่ง เช่น
Don’t go too near the river “in case” you “should” fall in it. (อย่าเข้าไปใกล้แม่น้ำนัก เพราะคุณอาจจะตกไปก็ได้)
ตามด้วยประโยค (Clause)
ถ้า In case วางไว้หน้า Clause แรก ไม่ต้องตามด้วย can, could, should, may, might เช่น
“In case” I “forget”, please remind me about that.
ระวัง! in case of + นาม (ไม่ใช่ประโยค) เช่น
“In case of” fire, please inform the fire-brigade. (ถ้าเกิดเพลิงไหม้ โปรดแจ้งกองดับเพลิงทราบ)

because และ because of: ทั้งสองคำแปลเหมือนกันคือ “เพราะ, เพราะว่า” แต่วิธีใช้ต่างกันคือ
because: เป็น Conjunction เชื่อมประโยคแสดงเหตุผล
หลัง because ต้องเป็นอนุประโยค (Clause) เสมอ เช่น
Jack did not come to school “because” he was ill.
because of: เป็น Preposition (คำที่ใช้เชื่อม Noun และ Pronoun เข้ากับคำอื่น ๆ ที่อยู่ในประโยค ทั้งนี้เพื่อให้ใจความของประโยคกลมกลืนสละสลวยขึ้น” ได้แก่ in, on, at, by, from, toward, into, etc.) วลี
หลัง because of ต้องมีกรรมมารับ จะเป็นสรรพนามหรือคำเสมอนามก็ได้ แต่จะเป็นประโยคไม่ได้ เช่น
She failed “because of” him.

the same…+Noun+…as: (เหมือนกับ, เช่นเดียวกันกับ)
ระหว่าง the same กับ as ให้ใส่คำนามเข้ามา เช่น
I have “the same” trouble “as” you (have). (ผมมีข้อยุ่งยากเช่นเดียวกับคุณ (มี))
ถ้านามนั้นกล่าวถึงมาแล้ว หรือผู้พูดและผู้ฟังรู้กันดีอยู่แล้วว่า หมายถึงอะไรในสิ่งที่เหมือนกัน หลัง the same ก็ไม่ใส่นามเข้ามา
This “book” is “the same as” that one. (หนังสือเล่มนี้เหมือนกับเล่มนั้น)

either of และ neither of
either of + นามพหูพจน์ = (อย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง)
ถ้าไปเป็นประธานในประโยค กริยาต้องใช้เอกพจน์ตลอดไป เช่น
“Either of you” is wrong. (เธอคนใดคนหนึ่งจะต้องผิด)
I don’t (กริยาพหูพจน์) want “either of the apples”. (ผมไม่ต้องการแอปเปิ้ลผลใดผลหนึ่ง)

neither of + นามพหูพจน์ = (ไม่ทั้งสองอย่าง)
ถ้าเป็นประธาน กริยาใช้เอกพจน์ เช่น
“Neither of the books” is of any use to me. (หนังสือทั้งสองเล่มไม่มีประโยชน์ใด ๆ แก่ผมเลย)
I want “neither of them”. (ผมไม่ต้องการทั้งสองอย่าง)

no sooner……than: (พอ…ก็)
คำนี้เป็น Conjunctive ใช้เชื่อมประโยคทั้งสองเข้าด้วยกัน
ประโยคที่ no sooner…than ไปเชื่อมมักเป็นประโยค Past Perfect (Subject + had +V3) กับ Past Simple (Subject + V2)
He had “no sooner” seen it “than” he started to run. (Past Perfect, Past Simple)
(พอเห็นเขาเริ่มออกวิ่ง)
หรือจะวาง No sooner ไว้ต้นประโยคก็ได้ เช่น
“No sooner” had he arrived “than” he was told to start back again. (Past Perfect, Past Simple)
(พอมาถึงเขาก็ได้รับคำสั่งให้ออกเดินทางกลับไปอีก)

not so…….as: (ไม่เท่ากับ)
คำนี้ความจริงก็คือ as…as นั่นเอง แต่ใช้ในประโยคปฏิเสธเท่านั้น (ส่วน as…as ใช้ในประโยคบอกเล่า) เช่น
บอกเล่า: He is “as clever as” you are. (เขาฉลาดเท่ากับคุณ(ฉลาด))
ปฏิเสธ: He is “not so clever as” you are. (เขาไม่ฉลาดเท่าคุณ
