เคยสงสัยไหมว่า คำที่เราพูดกันทุกวันอย่าง ‘OK’ มีที่มาจากไหน ย่อมาจากอะไร ทำไมคำสั้นๆ คำนี้ถึงกลายเป็นคำที่ถูกใช้ในบทสนทนาบ่อยที่สุดในโลก บ่อยกว่าคำว่า ‘ma’ ที่เด็กแรกเกิดใช้เรียกแม่ตัวเองเสียงอีก แถมคำคำนี้ยังเป็นคำแรกที่ถูกเอ่ยขึ้นตอนยานอวกาศลำแรกของมนุษยชาติแล่นลงบนดวงจันทร์อีกด้วย
โอเค! เรามาเริ่มกันเลย!!
OK เริ่มต้นจากมุกฝืดๆ เมื่อ 180 ปีที่แล้ว
แม้จะเคยมีการถกเถียงถึงที่มาของคำว่า OK มามากมาย บ้างก็บอกว่ามาจากคำภาษากรีกว่า ola kala ซึ่งแปลว่า it is good หรือคำว่า oke หรือ okeh ในภาษาชอคทอว์อินเดียน ซึ่งแปลว่า it is so แต่จริงๆ แล้วคำว่า OK เป็นคำน้องใหม่ที่เพิ่งเกิดขึ้นเมื่อ 180 ปีที่แล้วเท่านั้น
วันที่ 23 มีนาคม ค.ศ. 1839 หนังสือพิมพ์อเมริกัน Boston Morning Post ได้ตีพิมพ์มุกตลก (ที่ตอนนี้อาจจะไม่ค่อยตลกแล้ว) เกี่ยวกับการย่อคำ โดยตั้งใจสะกดตัวอักษรให้ที่ผิดแปลกไป เช่น
KY ย่อมาจาก Know Yuse (จริงๆ คือคำว่า No Use หมายถึง ไม่มีประโยชน์)
OW ย่อมาจาก Oll Wright (จริงๆ คือคำว่า All Right หมายถึง ดี น่าพอใจ)
และแน่นอน คำว่า OK ย่อมาจาก Oll Korrect ซึ่งจริงๆ แล้วคือคำว่า All Correct ซึ่งเป็นวลีติดปากชาวอเมริกันในช่วงต้นศตวรรษที่ 19 ใช้ในการคอนเฟิร์มว่าทุกอย่างเรียบร้อยดี (ตรงนี้อนุญาตให้ขำได้) เพราะคนยุคนั้นคิดว่าเป็นมุกที่ตลกมาก
แหม… ก็ขนาดคำว่า Correct ยังสะกดผิดเลย ตลกจัง (แต่ถ้าไม่ขำก็ไม่เป็นไร เพราะเราก็ไม่ขำเหมือนกัน) จากนั้น OK ในฐานะคำย่อของ All Correct ก็ไปปรากฏอยู่ในหน้าหนังสือพิมพ์อเมริกันอีกหลายฉบับ จนผู้คนเริ่มคุ้นเคยกับเจ้าตัวอักษรสองตัวนี้ขึ้นเรื่อยๆ
จากมุกฝืด สู่การเมืองสหรัฐฯ
อย่างไรก็ตาม สิ่งที่ทำให้ OK ไวรัลจริงๆ ไม่ใช่การปรากฏเป็นมุกตลกในสื่อหนังสือพิมพ์เพียงอย่างเดียวเท่านั้น แต่เป็นการที่ Martin Van Buren ประธานาธิบดีคนที่ 8 ของสหรัฐฯ ได้ใช้คำว่า OK ในแคมเปญการเลือกตั้งเพื่อเป็นประธานาธิบดีสมัยที่ 2 ในปี ค.ศ. 1940 ด้วย ตรงนี้ถ้าใครเคยดูหนังเรื่อง Silver Linings Playbook(2012) ก็อาจจะคุ้นๆ ฉากที่พระเอกพูดขึ้นกลางโต๊ะอาหารบ้านนางเอกได้ว่า คำว่า OK นั้นมาจากคลับของประธานาธิบดีคนนี้นั่นเอง
Martin Van Buren เป็นชายชาวนิวยอร์กที่เกิดในย่าน Kinderhook ทำให้เขามีชื่อเล่นว่า Old Kinderhook หรือเขียนสั้นๆ ได้ว่า OK ระหว่างการหาเสียง ประชาชนชาวอเมริกันที่ชื่นชมในความสามารถของเขาก็จัดตั้งสมาคม OK Club ขึ้นมาหลายแห่งทั่วประเทศ มีเข็มกลัดหาเสียงที่เขียนไว้ว่า Vote for OK เพื่อสนับสนุนให้เขาดำรงตำแหน่งเป็นประธานาธิบดีอีกสมัย ทั้งยังมีคำขวัญจำง่ายๆ ว่า “Old Kinderhook is Oll Korrect”
แต่คำขวัญที่ยกยอตัวเองขนาดนี้ก็ทำให้เกิดข้อโต้แย้งตามมาเช่นกัน หนังสือพิมพ์หลายฉบับจึงเอาชื่อแคมเปญของเขาไปล้อเลียนเป็นมุกตลกร้าย อย่างเช่น
O.K. Orful Konspiracy (Awful Conspiracy) หมายถึง การก่อกบฏที่น่าสะพรึงกลัว และ O.K. Orful Katastrophe (Awful Catastrophe) หมายถึง หายนะอันรุนแรง
สุดท้าย Martin Van Buren ต้องลงจากเก้าอี้ประธานาธิบดีไปอย่างน่าเสียดาย แต่ความพ่ายแพ้ของเขากลับสร้างชัยชนะที่ยิ่งใหญ่ให้กับคำเล็กๆ อย่าง OK
เพราะหลังจากนั้นไม่นาน เครื่องเทเลแกรมเครื่องแรกก็ถูกประดิษฐ์ขึ้น ทำให้คำสั้นๆ อย่าง OK กลายเป็นหนึ่งในคำที่ผู้คนส่งหากันมากที่สุด นอกจากนี้ยังมีหลักฐานปรากฏด้วยว่า พนักงานผู้ทำหน้าที่ส่งข้อความในเทเลแกรมจะไม่สามารถคอนเฟิร์มการส่งได้ หากหัวหน้ายังไม่ตอบรับด้วยคำว่า OK
ใครๆ ก็โอเค
แม้ว่าในช่วงแรก คำว่า OK จะถูกจัดว่าเป็นศัพท์ที่ใช้เชิงธุรกิจเท่านั้น (คล้ายๆ คำว่า ‘รับทราบ’) แต่เมื่อเข้าสู่ศตวรรษที่ 20 ความนิยมของ OK ก็แพร่หลายไปในวัฒนธรรมป็อปมากมาย ทั้งในเพลง หนัง หนังสือ จนผสมผสานเข้าไปอยู่ในบทสนทนาในชีวิตประจำวันของคนทั่วไปอย่างรวดเร็ว
แต่ทำไมคำนี้ถึงเป็นต้องการขนาดนั้น ในเมื่อคำตอบรับในภาษาอังกฤษอย่าง yes, ffiine, alright, sure, excellent ก็มีอยู่เกินจะนับนิ้วได้ นักภาษาศาสตร์ได้ให้ข้อสังเกตที่น่าสนใจไว้ดังนี้
1. OK คือคำที่เป็นกลาง ไม่แฝงความคิดเห็นของผู้พูด
หากเทียบกับคำตอบรับอื่นๆ ในภาษาอังกฤษ OK คือคำที่แสดงการตกลง เห็นด้วย หรือยินยอมให้ทำบางสิ่งบางอย่างด้วยน้ำเสียงที่เป็นกลางที่สุด เช่น
– Let’s meet this evening (เย็นนี้มาเจอกันเถอะ)
– Okay
หรือแม้แต่ในเพลงสุดฮิตของเด็กยุค 90’s อย่าง O.K. นะคะ โดย แคทรียา อิงลิช ก็ใช้คำว่า OK เพื่อเป็นการตอบรับให้มาเจอตามนัด เพราะจู่ๆ ก็เลยอยากเจอเธอขึ้นมา อยากจ้องตาเธอเหลือเกิน ก็เท่านั้น
2. OK มีรูปแบบของตัวอักษรที่จดจำง่าย
ถ้าสังเกตดีๆ คำว่า OK ประกอบด้วยตัวอักษร 2 ตัวที่มีรูปลักษณ์ไม่เหมือนกันเลย นั่นคือ ตัว O ที่มีลักษณะเป็นวงกลม โค้งมน ไม่มีเส้นอะไรมาตัด กับตัว K ซึ่งมีแต่เส้นตรงตัดกันและให้ลักษณะแหลมคม ทำให้ภาพของตัวอักษรสองตัวนี้โดดเด่นเมื่อมาอยู่คู่กัน สามารถดึงความสนใจจากสายตาได้รวดเร็ว และยังง่ายต่อการจดจำอีกด้วย
3. OK เข้าไปผสมกับภาษาอื่นได้อย่างไม่เคอะเขิน
เกือบทุกภาษาในโลกนี้มีสระ O และพยัญชนะ K อยู่เป็นทุนเดิมอยู่แล้ว ทำให้คำนี้แทรกซึมไปอยู่ในภาษาอื่นๆ ได้ง่าย โดยไม่รู้สึกว่าเป็นคำยืมจากภาษาต่างประเทศ แม้แต่พี่ฟลุค ไอน้ำ ก็ยังเคยบอกว่า “คนอื่นเนี่ยนะต้องโดนสักที แต่รักเธอคนนี้ฉันเลยโอเค…”
OK กับ okay ต่างกันอย่างไร
คำตอบคือ ไม่ต่าง คำว่า OK และ okay นั้นมีความหมายและคุณสมบัติที่เหมือนกันทุกประการ โดยสามารถเป็นได้ทั้งคำนาม คำกริยา คำคุณศัพท์ และคำวิเศษณ์ เพียงแค่คำว่า okay นั้นเริ่มถูกนำมาใช้หลังจาก OK เกือบร้อยปี อย่างไรก็ตาม ในปัจจุบัน เราจะเห็นสัดส่วนของการใช้ว่า okay มากกว่า OK เพื่อป้องกันการสับสนว่าเป็นตัวพิมพ์ใหญ่ที่ต้องขึ้นต้นประโยค และ okay ยังให้ความรู้สึกของการเป็น ‘คำศัพท์’ มากกว่าการเป็นคำย่อ อย่าง ‘OK’ อีกด้วย

🦞LOBSTER SALTED EGG SAUCE: Boil the whole lobster for 40 minutes then separate body and claws. Cut the lobster into 2 halves. For the salted egg sauce: Steam 5 salted egg yolks for 10 minutes \u0026 then put them in a bowl. Add water and smash the yolks. Add cooking oil to a skillet, pour in the salted egg sauce and stir. Put the lobster in the pan and allow it to cook with the sauce. Serve with coleslaw.
🦞FRIED CLAW WITH GARLIC: Rub the lobster claw with frying powder. Prepare a hot pan \u0026 add garlic. Place claw in the pan and fry for 1.5 mins. Remove lobster \u0026 mix with shrimp salt, onions, bell peppers, chilli and garlic.
🦞FRIED CLAW WITH BUTTERGARLIC SAUCE: Add butter, grinded garlic, water, MSG, condensed milk, oyster oil, cashew oil and chilli sauce to a hot pan. Place the claw in the pan and allow it to soak in the sauce for 1 minute. Remove the claw and place in a dish. Add onion slices in the pan and mix in with the sauce. Pour the sauce all over the claw and sprinkle fried garlic on top.

Our Earthbag Root Cellar Fails | Addressing the Mud Issue
We made the tough decision to deconstruct our earthbag root cellar that we built just one year ago. While burying the remains, we also take the opportunity to spread 40 yards of gravel around the property to decrease the mud come next spring thaw and increase the area we have to plow snow.
The root cellar structure worked wonderfully while it lasted to store the majority of our food through the winter but began showing signs of buckling with the heavy rains, frost, and the high water table in our area early this summer. We considered several options to replace the structure but came to no good conclusion and opted to end our ambitions here. We hope to find a solution for our food storage in the future but in the meantime we can be appreciative for what we were able to take away from this experience.
