1. โครงสร้างการใช้ If / Unless มีหลักการใช้ดังนี้

1.1 ใช้ในกรณีที่มีเหตุการณ์อย่างหนึ่งเกิดขึ้น แล้วจะมีอีกเหตุการณ์หนึ่งเกิดขึ้นเสมอ (ในกรณีนี้ if = when) โดยจะมีโครงสร้างประโยคภาษาอังกฤษดังนี้

If + Simple present tense + Simple present tense

หรือ

Simple present tense + If + Simple present tense

เรียนภาษาอังกฤษจากตัวอย่างประโยค

If you drop a glass, it breaks.
แปลว่า เมื่อคุณทำแก้วหล่น แก้วแตก

Most people don’t smile if they feel unhappy.
แปลว่า คนส่วนมากไม่ยิ้มถ้าหากพวกเขาไม่มีความสุข

1.2 เมื่อกล่าวถึงเหตุการณ์ในอนาคต (Future action) จะใช้โครงสร้างประโยคภาษาอังกฤษดังนี้

If + Simple present tense + Future simple tense

หรือ

Future simple tense + If + Simple present tense

1.3 เมื่อกล่าวถึงเหตุการณ์ในปัจจุบัน (Present time) จะใช้โครงสร้างประโยคภาษาอังกฤษดังนี้

Subject + would / could / might + verb + if + verb 2

If he worked hard, he would pass the exam.
แปลว่า ถ้าเขาขยันเขาจะสอบผ่าน

If I had enough money, I would buy a tennis racquet for you.
แปลว่า ถ้าหากฉันมีเงินมากพอ ฉันจะซื้อไม้ตีเทนนิสให้คุณ

1.4 เมื่อกล่าวถึงเหตุการณ์ในอดีต (Past time) จะใช้รูปประโยคภาษาอังกฤษในโครงสร้างดังนี้

Subject + would / could / might + have + verb 3 + if + Subject + had + verb 3

1.5 เมื่อพูดถึงสถานการณ์ที่ไม่มีทางเป็นไปได้ จะใช้โครงสร้างประโยคภาษาอังกฤษดังนี้

Subject + would / could / might + verb + if + Subject + were

If I were Prime Minister, I would spend more money on agriculture.
แปลว่า ถ้าฉันเป็นนายกรัฐมนตรี ฉันจะทุ่มเงินเพื่อพัฒนาการเกษตร

If I were a bird, I would fly round the world.
แปลว่า ถ้าฉันเป็นนก ฉันจะบินไปรอบโลก

1.6 ในกรณีที่ If-clause มีคำว่า were / should / had สามารถนำมาใช้แบบ if ได้เลย เช่น

If you should listen properly, you will understand.
เหมือนกับ Should you listen properly, you will understand.
แปลว่า ถ้าหากคุณฟังดีๆ คุณจะเข้าใจ

If I had known him before, I would not have talked to him.
เหมือนกับ Had I known him before, I would not have talked to him.
แปลว่า ถ้าฉันรู้จักเขามาก่อน ฉันจะไม่คุยกับเขา

1.7 การใช้ unless ในภาษาอังกฤษ มีวิธีการใช้เหมือน if แต่ความหมายต่างกัน โดยที่คำว่า unless จะมีความหมายเท่ากับ if … not ดังตัวอย่างประโยคภาษาอังกฤษต่อไปนี้

If you don’t go away at once, I will send for the police.
เหมือนกับ Unless you go away at once, I will send for the police.
แปลว่า ถ้าหากคุณไม่ไปให้พ้นฉันจะเรียก(ส่ง)ตำรวจ

You will miss the bus, if you don’t hurry.
เหมือนกับ You will miss the bus unless you hurry.
แปลว่า ถ้าคุณไม่รีบคุณจะไม่ทันรถประจำทาง (รถเมล์)

2. การใช้โครงสร้าง Whether … or not
มีหลักการใช้เหมือนกับ if เช่น

Peter will eat bananas whether he goes home or not.
แปลว่า ปีเตอร์จะกินกล้วยไม่ว่าเขาจะกลับบ้านหรือไม่ก็ตาม

Whether Peter had gone home or not, he would have eaten bananas.
แปลว่า ไม่ว่าปีเตอร์จะไปบ้านหรือไม่ก็ตาม เขาจะกินกล้วย

ข้อควรรู้สำหรับผู้เรียนภาษาอังกฤษ

มีการใช้ Whether … or ในประโยคภาษาอังกฤษที่มีตัวเลือกตั้งแต่ 2 ตัวขึ้นไป เช่น

He cannot decide whether to go abroad or stay at home.
แปลว่า เขาตัดสินใจไม่ถูกว่าจะไปต่างประเทศหรืออยู่บ้านดี

3. การใช้ or else / otherwise

สำหรับการใช้ or else และ otherwise ในภาษาอังกฤษ จะมีความหมายเช่นเดียวกันกับ if … not

If we don’t hurry, we’ll be late.
เหมือนกับ We must hurry or else we will be late.
แปลว่า พวกเราต้องรีบ ไม่อย่างนั้นพวกเราจะสาย

If we don’t practise our English every day, we will soon forget it.
เหมือนกับ We must practise our English every day; otherwise we will soon forget it.
แปลว่า พวกเราต้องฝึกฝนภาษาอังกฤษทุกวัน ไม่อย่างนั้นเราจะลืมหมด

If you don’t do as your mother says, she will punish you.
เหมือนกับ You must do as your mother says or else (otherwise) she will punish you.
แปลว่า คุณจะต้องทำตามที่แม่คุณสั่ง ไม่อย่างนั้นจะถูกเธอทำโทษ

What does the phrase “YOU ARE SOMETHING ELSE” MEAN?

It depends in what text the statement was made. The sentence can be said both in a good and a bad sense.The sentence could  be explained as  you are not like somebody else, or there is something special about you. It could also be “something unique” something the speaker could not think of or do.

Here is another example for the good meaning:

Sample : Man, this guy is something else. นั่นหมายถึงผู้ชายคนนี้ไม่เหมือนคนอื่นๆค่ะ เป็นผู้ชายที่ร้องเพลงได้ไพเราะ และ มีสไตล์ของตัวเองจริง

However in the negative meaning could be >>> You are weird, different.

For example: you walk into a room and start dancing around like a idiot and someone looks at you and says “You are something else! You know that? You are something else!”  สมมุติว่าคุณเดินเข้ามาในห้องแล้วเริ่มเต้นอย่างบ้าคลั่งไปรอบๆห้อง คนเค้าอาจจะพูดได้ว่า You are something else! ซึ่งเขาหมายถึงว่า”คุณบ้าป่ะเนี่ย”

ยังไงลองเอาไปใช้ในชีวิตเราดูน่ะค่ะ แต่อย่าลืมใส่น้ำเสียงให้เหมาะสมกับรูปประโยคน่ะค่ะ
