หลังจากที่ได้อ่านหลักการใช้แล้ว ทีนี้มาดูไทม์ไลน์กันว่าจะเป็นจริงอย่างที่บอกไว้หรือไหม่ ทีบอกว่า tense นี้ใช้บอกกล่าวเหตุการณ์ที่กำลังเกิดขึ้น

• สีดำคือ อดีตที่หมองหม่น

• สีส้มคือปัจจุบันที่สดใส

• สีชมพู คือ อนาคตที่เรืองรองผ่องอำไพ

• ลูกศรสีขาวไซร้คือเหตุการณ์ (ณ ตอนนี้)

• เส้นประหมายถึงระยะเวลาสั้นๆ (สำหรับ Continuous Tense)

• เส้นประสีขาวคือช่วงระยะเวลาที่เหตุการณ์เกิดขึ้นแล้ว

• เส้นประสีเหลืองคือช่วงระยะเวลาที่เหตุการณ์ที่ยังดำเนินต่อไป

ให้สังเกตุที่ลูกศรนะครับ มันคือเหตุการณ์ที่กำลังเกิดขึ้นขณะนั้น มีตัวเดียวนะครับ นั่นหมายความว่าเป็นเหตุการที่เรากำลังพบเจออยู่ ส่วนเส้นประสีเหลืองนั้นหมายถึงระยะเวลาของเหตุการณ์

ถ้าดูจากเส้นเวลาแล้วสามารถเดาได้ว่า วิ่งมาพักหนึ่งแล้ว (ประสีขาว) ตอนนี้กำลังวิ่งอยู่ (ลูกศรสีขาว) และน่าจะวิ่งต่ออีกสักพักคงอยุดแน่นอน (ประสีเหลือง)

ระยะเวลาของเหตุการณ์ใน Present Continuous  Tense นานแค่ไหน ตรงนี้ขอให้นักเรียนทำความเข้าใจว่ามันเป็น ระยะเวลาสั้นๆของเหตุการณ์ อาจจะสักสิบนาที ยี่สิบนาทีหรือสามสิบนาที เพราะถ้าจะพูดถึงเหตุการที่เกิดขึ้นนานๆ ตั้งแต่เป็นชั่วโมงขึ้นไปเนี่ย จะใช้   perfect กับ   perfect continuous แทน เพราะสอง tense ดังกล่าวจะมีการระบุเวลาด้วยว่ากี่ชั่วโมง กี่วัน กี่เดือน หรือกี่ปีเป็นต้น

Continuous Tense ไม่ว่าจะเป็น Past Continuous Tense (อดีต) Present Continuous Tense (ปัจจุบัน )หรือ Future Continuous Tense (อนาคต) ก็ดี หมายถึงเหตการณ์ที่เกิดไม่นานเท่าไหร่ ขอให้จำตรงนี้เอาไว้นะครับ เผื่อเจอ Continuous Tense อีกสองตัวที่เหลือจะได้เข้าใจง่ายขึ้น

มีน้องถามสงสัยว่า past simple and past continuous ต่างกันตรงไหน มันก็ต่างกันตรงที่ past simple เหตุการณ์จบไปแล้วในอดีต ในขณะที่ past continuous เหตูการณ์กำลังดำเนินอยู่ในช่วงระยะเวลาหนึ่งในอดีต
