Superlative adjectives in English
Superlative adjectives in English are used when comparing more than 2 things. The most beautiful, the best food, the worst football player.
Learn all about superlative adjectives in this grammar lesson. I’ll teach you what they are, how and when to use them, and give you some spelling tips and important exceptions to the rules. Test yourself on superlatives with the quiz at the end.
Hi, my name is Sarah and today we are going to learn about superlative adjectives in English.
If you have not seen my lesson on comparative adjectives, I recommend you follow the link above or down below first.
As we saw in my lesson on comparative adjectives, we say \”This car is faster than this car.\”
When we are comparing MORE than 2 things we use the superlative.
This is the fastest car. It goes 300 kph.
Here : this is the fastest car.
Is the superlative.
When using a one syllable adjective such as tall, small or fast.
We use THE plus the adjective plus EST.
So lets go back to our snail and rabbit.
If we compare the two animals we say
The snail is slower than the rabbit.
But if we add the sloth
We say:
The sloth is the slowest animal in the world.
It is slower than ALL other animals.
Now remember our flowers.
A beautiful bunch of tulips and an unwanted weed.
These flowers are more beautiful than these flowers.
But the rose is the most beautiful flower. It is more beautiful than all the other flowers.
When comparing more than 2 things with most adjectives with two syllables or more, we add \”the most\” plus the adjective
For example: Skiing is the most exciting sport.
Ex – cit – ing is 3 syllables so we use THE most.
So the Rule is :
Short adjectives ( 1 syllable) we add \”the + adjective + est\”
Long adjectives 2 syllables or more we add \”the most + adjective\”.
There are some spelling changes you should remember.
The first one to remember is with onesyllable adjectives with the pattern consonant vowel consonant
remember to double the final consonant before –est
For example.
This is the biggest ball.
Notice the double consonant g.
If the adjective ends in –e, just add –rst This house is the largest.
2 syllable adjectives ending in y like Lucky, Happy and angry.
First thing to note is that unlike other adjectives with 2 syllables the don’t take more but –est.
AND the –y, it changes to I

For example
This monkey is the angriest.
Notice angry is a 2 syllable adjective an gry ending in y so we est
AND the y has changed to I
Now for the exceptions:
The first one is good. So the drink is good. Then you compare the meal and the drink and the meal is better and then you compare fruit to both of them and
Fruit is the best food for your health.
The superlative of good is the best. not the goodest!
Then bad.
So likewise Alcohol is bad for your health. Cigarettes are worse.
But the worst of all is drugs. So drugs are the worst thing for your health.
The superlative of bad is worst not the baddest!
And lastly far. So as we saw in my compartives tutorial .
The UK is far, China is farther/ further. But the furthest of all is Pluto.
So Pluto is the farthest or furthest planet from the Earth.
Note that you can use farthest or furthest as a superlative for far.
Now its your turn.
Compare these 3 cats using the adjective fat.
This cat is ……. the fattest.
Remember CVC, consonant, vowel, consonant, you double the final consonant.
Compare these 3 people using the adjective lucky.
This woman is ………the luckiest.
Remember 2 syllable adjectives ending in y don’t take more but –est and remember y changes to I
Compare these 3 objects using the adjective expensive.
A crown, a pen and an apple.

Superlative Adjectives in English -the biggest, the best, the most beautiful - English Grammar

Grammar Time: Superlative + Present perfect + Ever!

My Questions for YOU are…:
1. What is the most interesting book you have ever read?
2. Who is the nicest person you have ever met?
3. Who is the most attractive celebrity you have ever seen?
4. What is the most beautiful place you have ever visited?
Let me know in the comments!
About this video…
This video should help you to understand this grammar structure: superlative + present perfect + ever
e.g.\”This is the most interesting book I have ever read\”
In that example sentence, the superlative is ‘the most interesting’, and the present perfect is ‘I have (ever) read’
A few basics first…
A NOUN is a place, person or thing (e.g. London, Anya, and book are all nouns)
An ADJECTIVE is a word used to describe a noun (e.g. big, lovely, interesting are all adjectives)
We use COMPARATIVE adjectives to compare 2 things.
The general rule for comparatives is that, if the adjective has one or two syllables, we add ‘r’, ‘er’ or ‘ier’ to the end of the word (the spelling may also change a little). Some examples: nicer, bigger, lovelier.
If the adjective has three or more syllables, we usually say ‘more + adjective’. For example: more interesting, more beautiful, more expensive.
We use SUPERLATIVE adjectives to compare 3 or more things.
If the adjective has one or two syllables, we usually add the word ‘THE’ and adjective + ‘est’ or ‘iest’. For example: the nicest, the biggest, the loveliest
If it has three or more syllables, we will say ‘THE MOST +adjective’ For example: the most interesting, the most beautiful, the most expensive
But be careful! Not all words follow this rule!! Here are a few that don’t:
fun….more fun…the most fun
bored…more bored…the most bored/ boring…more boring…the most boring
tragic….more tragic…the most tragic
There are also IRREGULAR comparatives and superlatives. A couple of the most important ones:
bad…worse…the worst
good…better…the best
We use the grammar structure ‘superlative + present perfect + ever’ to compare one thing to all the others we have experienced in our lives.
A few examples:
Bangkok is the hottest city I have ever been to.
Harry Potter is the most exciting movie I’ve ever watched.
She is the loveliest girl I’ve ever met.
This is the most difficult exam I have ever taken.
Hope you found all that information helpful!
