You cannot learn selfdefense with an article, a book, a DVD, or a video. We strongly encourage you to take a class, and to use the techniques learned if someone attempts to hold you and you can not escape.

Self defense is perfect to escape from a single, unarmed assaulter who wants to hold and attack you. In some cases, selfdefense is useless or unnecessary. If someone asks for your bag, at gunpoint, give him your bag. If you are attacked by a group, scream. The priority is to protect your physical integrity and escape safely, not to protect your personal belongings with unnecessary risks.
Lastly, we would like to underline that the only person responsible for any assault is the assaulter. Suggesting the victim is responsible for her assault undermines her right to enjoy a very fundamental freedom.
However, you can try a few things to reduce the risk of assault.
Call a taxi if you can
Go out with friends, and ask them to walk you home
Have your path already plotted so there is no hesitation in walking
Stay on welllit, busy streets
Dress to blendin and avoid visible luxurious jewelry
Keep valuables out of sight
Wear shoes that allow running
Don’t use your phone or music, they don’t help and make you less aware of your surroundings
Walk with purpose and confidence
Pretend to be nonchalant, like nothing is a big deal
Know that selfdefense lessons are not only about combat techniques, they teach also efficient physical/verbal/psychological techniques to prevent violence before it happens.
