Present Perfect Continuous

The present perfect continuous (also called present perfect progressive) is a verb tense which is used to show that an action started in the past and has continued up to the present moment. The present perfect continuous usually emphasizes duration, or the amount of time that an action has been taking place. Present Perfect Continuous Forms

The present perfect continuous is formed using has/have + been + present participle. Questions are indicated by inverting the subject and has/have. Negatives are made with not.

• Statement:

  You have been waiting here for two hours.

• Question:

  Have you been waiting here for two hours?

• Negative:

  You have not been waiting here for two hours.

Present Perfect Continuous Uses

USE 1 Duration from the Past Until Now

We use the present perfect continuous to show that something started in the past and has continued up until now. “For five minutes,” “for two weeks,” and “since Tuesday” are all durations which can be used with the present perfect continuous.

Examples:

• They have been talking for the last hour.
• She has been working at that company for three years.
• What have you been doing for the last 30 minutes?
• James has been teaching at the university since June.
• We have been waiting here for over two hours!
• Why has Nancy not been taking her medicine for the last three days?

USE 2 Recently, Lately

You can also use the present perfect continuous WITHOUT a duration such as “for two weeks.” Without the duration, the tense has a more general meaning of “lately.” We often use the words “lately” or “recently” to emphasize this meaning.

Examples:

• Recently, I have been feeling really tired.
• She has been watching too much television lately.
• Have you been exercising lately?
• Mary has been feeling a little depressed.
• Lisa has not been practicing her English.
• What have you been doing?

IMPORTANT

Remember that the present perfect continuous has the meaning of “lately” or “recently.” If you use the present perfect continuous in a question such as “Have you been feeling alright?”, it can suggest that the person looks sick or unhealthy. A question such as “Have you been smoking?” can suggest that you smell the smoke on the person. Using this tense in a question suggests you can see, smell, hear or feel the results of the action. It is possible to insult someone by using this tense incorrectly.

REMEMBER Non-Continuous Verbs/ Mixed Verbs

It is important to remember that non-continuous verbs cannot be used in any continuous tenses. Also, certain non-continuous meanings for mixed verbs cannot be used in continuous tenses. Instead of using present perfect continuous with these verbs, you must use present perfect.

Examples:

• Sam has been having his car for two years. Not Correct
• Sam has had his car for two years. Correct

ADVERB PLACEMENT

The examples below show the placement for grammar adverbs such as: always, only, never, ever, still, just, etc.

Examples:

• You have only been waiting here for one hour.
• Have you only been waiting here for one hour?

ACTIVE / PASSIVE

Examples:

• Recently, John has been doing the work. Active
• Recently, the work has been being done by John. Passive

1. Present simple tense

โครงสร้างประโยค คือ S + V

• ใช้พูดถึงความจริง(ทั้งที่เกี่ยวกับตัวเรา และความจริงตามธรรมชาติ)
  I live in Bangkok. = ฉันอาศัยอยู่ในกรุงเทพ
• ใช้พูดถึงความชอบ ความคิดเห็น
  She likes spicy food. = เธอชอบอาหารรสจัด
• ใช้พูดถึงตารางเวลา
  The library closes at 7 p.m. = ห้องสมุดปิดตอนหนึ่งทุ่ม

2. Present continuous tense

โครงสร้างประโยค คือ S + is/am/are + V.ing

• ใช้พูดถึงเหตุการณ์ที่ กำลังเกิดขึ้นในขณะที่พูดหรือในช่วงเวลานี้ของชีวิต
  I am studying Japanese. = ฉันกำลังเรียนภาษาญี่ปุ่นอยู่
• ใช้พูดถึงอนาคตอันใกล้ที่เกิดขึ้นแน่นอน
  I am flying to South Korea tomorrow. = ฉันกำลังจะไปเกาหลีใต้พรุ่งนี้

3. Present perfect tense

โครงสร้างประโยค คือ S + have/has + V.3

• ใช้เล่าถึงเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นในอดีต แต่ระบุช่วงเวลาที่แน่นอนไม่ได้ (ไม่เน้นเวลาที่แน่นอน)
  I have met him before. = ฉันเคยเจอเขามาก่อน
• ใช้เล่าถึงสิ่งที่เคยทำมา ประสบการณ์ที่ผ่านมา สถานที่ที่เคยไปมา
  I have been to South Korea. = ฉันเคยไปเกาหลีใต้
• ใช้เล่าถึงเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นในอดีต แต่ยังดำเนินต่อเนื่องมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน
  I have had several tests this month. = ฉันมีสอบหลายตัวเลยเดือนนี้
• ใช้เล่าถึงเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นในอดีต ดำเนินมา และเพิ่งเสร็จหรือเพิ่งจบลง (และเหตุการณ์นั้นอาจส่งผลต่อปัจจุบัน)
  l have washed the car. = ฉันล้างรถเสร็จแล้ว

4. Present perfect continuous tense

โครงสร้างประโยค คือ S + have/has + been + V.ing

• ใช้กับเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นในอดีต ดำเนินต่อเนื่องมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน และในขณะที่พูดเหตุการณ์นั้นก็ยังไม่จบ ยังดำเนินอยู่ (เน้นมากว่ายังดำเนินอยู่)
  She has been sleeping for 4 hours. = เธอหลับมา 4 ชั่วโมงแล้ว (ขณะนี้ก็ยังคงหลับอยู่)
  It has been raining for 3 hours. = ฝนตกมา 3 ชั่วโมงแล้ว (ตกไม่หยุดเลย)

5. Past simple tense

โครงสร้างประโยค คือ S + V.2

• ใช้พูดถึงเหตุการณ์ในอดีต ที่เกิดขึ้นแล้วก็จบ เป็นเหตุการณ์สั้นๆ ที่มีการระบุช่วงเวลาที่เกิดเหตุการณ์ด้วย
  I was in South Korea in 2019. = ฉันอยู่ที่เกาหลีใต้ในปี 2015

หมายเหตุ : past simple tense และ Present perfect tense ใช้พูดถึงเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นในอดีตเหมือนกัน แต่ต่างกันที่ past simple tense ระบุวันเวลาที่เกิดเหตุการณ์ได้ แต่ Present perfect tense ใช้พูดถึงเหตุการณ์ในอดีตที่เราไม่รู้เวลาที่แน่ชัด

​6. Past continuous tense

โครงสร้างประโยค คือ S + was/were + V.ing

• ใช้พูดถึงเหตุการณ์ที่กำลังเกิดขึ้น ในช่วงเวลาใดเวลาหนึ่ง ในอดีต
  We were playing football yesterday at 10.00. = พวกเรากำลังเล่นฟุตบอลเมื่อวานตอน 10 โมง
• ใช้พูดถึงเหตุการณ์ที่กำลังเกิดขึ้น พร้อมๆกัน ในช่วงเวลาใดเวลาหนึ่ง ในอดีต
  My dad was exercising while my mom was sunbathing. = พ่อของฉันกำลังออกกำลังกายในขณะที่แม่ของฉันกำลังอาบแดดอยู่
• ใช้พูดถึงเหตุการณ์ 2 เหตุการณ์ในอดีต โดยเหตุการณ์แรกเป็นเหตุการณ์ที่ กำลังเกิดขึ้น แล้วเหตุการณ์ที่สองก็แทรกขึ้นมา โดยเหตุการณ์แรกนั้น คือ past continuous tense ส่วนเหตุการณ์ที่สองที่แทรกมานั้น เป็น past simple tense
  I was having breakfast when someone came to my home. = ฉันกำลังกินอาหารเช้า ตอนที่มีใครมาที่บ้าน

7. Past perfect tense

โครงสร้างประโยค คือ S + had + V.3

• ใช้พูดถึงเหตุการณ์ 2 เหตุการณ์ในอดีต โดยเหตุการณ์แรกเป็นเหตุการณ์ที่ เกิดขึ้นและดำเนินมาได้ระยะเวลาหนึ่งแล้วจบลง จากนั้นจึงเกิดเหตุการณ์ที่สองตามมา (เหตุการณ์แรกนั้น คือ past perfect tense ส่วนเหตุการณ์ที่สองที่เกิดขึ้นตามนั้น เป็น past simple tense)
  I had worked for 8 hours before Emma arrived. = ฉันทำงานเป็นเวลา 8 ชั่วโมง ก่อนที่เอ็มม่าจะมา

8. Past perfect continuous tense

โครงสร้างประโยค คือ S + had been + V.ing

• ใช้เหมือนกันกับ past perfect tense แต่เน้นมากๆว่าเหตุการณ์แรกนั้น เกิดขึ้นและดำเนินมาอย่างต่อเนื่อง แล้วจบลงก่อนที่จะเกิดเหตุการณ์ที่สองตามมา (เหตุการณ์แรกนั้น คือ past perfect continuous tense ส่วนเหตุการณ์ที่สองที่เกิดขึ้นตามนั้น เป็น past simple tense)
  I had been working for 4 hours before Emma arrived. = ฉันทำงานอย่างต่อเนื่องมานาน 4 ชั่วโมง ก่อนที่เอ็มม่าจะมา

โครงสร้างประโยค คือ S + will + V.1

• ใช้พูดถึงอนาคต เป็นการคาดเดา หรือ จากความรู้สึก
  I will pass the exam. = ฉันต้องสอบผ่าน
• ใช้พูดถึงการตัดสินใจในทันที ว่าจะทำอะไร
  I will go home before it rains. = ฉันจะกลับบ้าน ก่อนที่ฝนจะตก

10. Future continuous tense

โครงสร้างประโยค คือ S + will + be + V.ing

• ใช้พูดถึงเหตุการณ์ที่จะเกิดขึ้น แน่ๆ ในช่วงเวลาใดเวลาหนึ่งในอนาคต
  When you arrive, I will be swimming. = ตอนที่คุณมาถึง ฉันคงกำลังว่ายน้ำอยู่

11. Future perfect tense

โครงสร้างประโยค คือ S + will + have + V.3

• พูดถึงเหตุการณ์ ที่เกิดขึ้น(อาจเกิดขึ้นเมื่อ อดีต ปัจจุบัน หรืออนาคตก็ได้ )และดำเนินต่อไป เพื่อที่จะไปจบในอนาคตแน่นอน หรือก่อนจะมีอีกเหตุการณ์หนึ่งเกิดขึ้นในอนาคต (เน้นว่าไปจบในอนาคต และเน้นการบอกจุดจบ)
  They will have finished the work by next week. = พวกเขาจะเสร็จสิ้นการทำงานภายในสัปดาห์หน้า

12. Future perfect continuous tense

โครงสร้างประโยค คือ S + will have been + V.ing

• พูดถึงเหตุการณ์ ที่เกิดขึ้น และบอกได้ว่าต่อเนื่องมาเป็นระยะเวลาเท่าไหร่ กี่ปี กี่เดือน กี่วัน (คือรู้จุดเริ่มต้นของเหตุการณ์ อาจเริ่มมาจาก อดีต ปัจจุบัน หรืออนาคต) แล้วเหตุการณ์นั้นจะไปจบลงในอนาคต หรือก่อนที่จะมีเหตุการณ์หนึ่งเกิดขึ้นในอนาคตนั่นเอง
  He will have been living here for three years next month. = เขาคงจะอาศัยอยู่ที่นี่มาครบ 3 ปีแล้วในเดือนหน้า
