[NEW] Like/Enjoy/Hate/Love +ING+VERBS | ing form คือ – NATAVIGUIDES

Every time you use the verbs Like/Love/Hate and Enjoy you need to use another verb. 

The form of the second verb depends on the first verb. You need to learn if the second verb is in the ING form or in the TO(infinitive form).

The verbs Like/Love/Hate usually take the ING form 

The verb Enjoy always takes the ING form 

Examples of verbs after Like/Love/Hate

I love playing tennis.

I like watching T.V after dinner.

I hate eating and walking at the same time.

Examples of Verbs after Enjoy

It is not possible to use TO after Enjoy 

I enjoy playing tennis.   I enjoy to play tennis.

I enjoy swimming in the sea.

You enjoy listening to the radio.

The following verbs are followed by ING

enjoy mind stop finish suggest

I enjoy drinking coffee in the morning.

I don’t mind drinking tea without milk.

I stopped writing the book.

I finished studying for my exam.

I suggest listening to BBC 6 minute English. 

VERB+ TO (Infinitive)

want plan decide try hope expect offer forget need promise refuse learn

I want to go to India one day.

I planned to go to Australia but I didn’t go.

I tried to open the bottle.

I hope to learn Japanese soon.

I expected to pass the exam.

I offered to bring him home.

I needed to get a passport.

I promised to talk to her. 

I refused to take out the rubbish.

I learned to be patient.

When to use ING or infinitive with Like/Love/Hate

There is a small difference between when you use ING or TO with these verbs.

I like waking up early.(generally)

I like to wake up early. (it is a good idea)

I like drinking coffee.(generally)

I like to add cinnamon to my coffee.(it is a good idea, my preference).

We use ING to say that we like things in general. It is the most common form.

Sometimes we use TO when we want to add emphasis that it is our preference. 

Is it Gerund or infinitive after the verb to be?

The verb does not need a second verb.

We use the verb to be:

Adjectives

I am tired.

You are beautiful.

Continuous sentences

I am playing football.

You are reading this sentence.

The passive voice.

He was arrested by the police.

I was caught by the teacher.

Prefer + ING?

Prefer is the same as Like/Love/Hate. It is more common to use the ING form but the TO(infinitve form) is also possible. 

I prefer walking (in general). 

I prefer to walk on the sand (my preference). 

I like to swim or I like swimming?

This is the same as the examples above but let’s think about when we use each one(both are correct).

I like swimming.

In this case we are talking about swimming in general as a sport. 

I like to swim in the sea.

In this case we want to say that it is our preference to swim in the sea and that it is better than swimming in a swimming pool for example.

จากคำนิยามของ Cambridge Dictionary

• Gerund : a word ending in “-ing” that is made from a verb and used like a noun
• Gerund (เจ๊อเรินดึ) คือ คำที่ลงท้ายด้วย ing ซึ่งสร้างจากคำกริยาและใช้เสมือนคำนาม

สรุปว่า Gerund คือ คำกริยาที่เติม ing แล้วทำหน้าที่เหมือนคำนามนั่นเอง แต่การเติม ing ก็มีหลักการอยู่นะครับ

แล้วมันเป็นคำเดียวกันกับ กริยา เติม ing หรือเปล่า?

ตอบ… มันก็คำเดียวกัน แต่ทำหน้าที่ต่างกัน

• ถ้ามันทำหน้าที่เป็นกริยา แปลว่า กำลัง
• ถ้าทำหน้าที่เป็น gerund แปลว่า การ

I am swimming. ฉันกำลังว่ายน้ำ

I like swimming. ฉันชอบการว่ายน้ำ แต่เรามักแปลกันว่า ฉันชอบว่ายน้ำ

หลักการใช้ Gerund มีอะไรบ้าง

1. Gerund ทำหน้าที่เป็นประธานของประโยค
2. Gerund ทำหน้าที่เป็นกรรมของประโยค
3. Gerund ทำหน้าที่เป็นกรรมของบุพบท

ก็รู้กันไปแล้วนะครับว่า Gerund มันก็เป็นเสมือนคำนาม หรือจะเรียกว่า เป็นคำนามชนิดหนึ่งก็ได้ ซึ่งเรารู้กันดีว่า คำนามคือ คำที่ใช้แทนคน สัตว์ สิ่งของ สถานที่ ดังนั้น มันก็สามารถทำหน้าที่ได้คล้ายคำนามทั่วๆนั่นเอง

คำนามที่เป็น Gerund มักจะแปลว่า “การ…” เช่น walking การเดิน, swimming การว่ายน้ำ, fishing การตกปลา etc.

แต่เวลาแปลเป็นภาษาไทย เรามักจะตัดคำว่าการออกไปเช่น

• I like swimming.
  ฉัน ชอบ การว่ายน้ำ
  เรามักจะแปลเป็น “ฉันชอบว่ายน้ำ” เป็นต้น

  การว่ายน้ำ เป็นการออกกำลังกายที่ดีที่สุด

• Exercising is good for your heart.
  การออกกำลังกาย ดีต่อหัวใจของคุณ

• Eating too much sugar can cause diabetes.
  การกินน้ำตาลมากเกินไป ทำให้เป็นโรคเบาหวานได้

• Sleeping too little can cause headaches.
  การนอนหลับที่น้อยเกินไป อาจทำให้เกิดอาการปวดหัวได้

• Playing games can be bad for your brain.
  การเล่นเกมอาจเป็นผลเสียต่อสมองของคุณ

• Drinking water in the moring will make you feel fresh all day.
  การดื่มน้ำในตอนเช้าจะทำให้คุณสดชื่นทั้งวัน

Gerund ทำหน้าที่เป็นกรรมของประโยค

ตามได้ที่เรียนมาแล้ว เราจะให้นิยาม กรรม ว่า “คือ ผู้ถูกกระทำ” จะอยู่หลังกริยา ถ้า Gerund เป็นกรรม เรามักจะไม่แปลว่า “การ..”

• I love drinking Coke.
  ผมชอบดื่มโค๊ก

• My dad quit smoking 3 years ago.
  พ่อของผมเลิกสูบบุหรี่ 3 ปีมาแล้ว

• I don’t like swimming in the morning.
  ผมไม่ชอบว่ายน้ำในตอนเช้า

• I prefer eating spicy food.
  ผมชอบกินอาหารรสจัด

• I like playing football with my friends.
  ฉันชอบเล่นฟุตบอลกับเพื่อนของฉัน

• I hate doing housework
  ผมเกลียดการทำงานบ้าน

• Sam admitted to stealing my money.
  แซมยอมรับว่าขโมยเงินผมไป

• Sam denied stealing my money.
  แซมปฏิเสธว่าไม่ได้ขโมยเงินผมไป

• Our teacher suggested reading magazines.
  ครูของพวกเราแนะนำให้อ่านแมกกาซีน

Gerund ทำหน้าที่เป็นกรรมของบุพบท

คำบุพบทคือคำที่บอกความสัมพันธ์ของคำ เช่น บน ใน ที่ ของ (on in at of etc.) เป็นต้น แต่ถ้าตามด้วย Gerund เมื่อไหร่ คำบุรพบท ก็เป็นแค่คำประกอบเท่านั้นเอง ไม่ได้มีความหมายหลักแต่อย่างใด เช่น

I’m afraid of….  แปลเป็นคำๆ จะแปลว่า ผม กลัว ของ..

แต่จริงๆแล้ว สำนวนนี้แปลว่า ผมกลัว…. ซึ่งคำว่า of…. ไม่มีความหมายใดๆ

I’m afraid of speaking in front of the class. แปลว่า ผมกลัวการพูดหน้าชั้นเรียน

• I’m bored of doing homework every day.
  ผมเบื่อการทำการบ้านทุกวัน

• We’re excited about going to London next month.
  พวกเราตื่นเต้นที่จะได้ไปลอนดอนเดือนหน้า

• She is interested in playing the piano.
  หล่อนสนใจที่จะเล่นเปียโน

• His wife is tired of doing housework every week.
  ภรรยาของเขาเหนื่อยหน่ายในการทำการงานบ้านทุกอาทิตย์

• Her husband is tired from working all day long.
  สามีของหล่อนเหนื่อยล้าจากการทำงานทั้งวัน

• Dad is anxious about finishing the plan in time.
  พ่อเป็นกังวลในการทำโครงการให้เสร็จทันเวลา

• Lee is famous for making waterbeds.
  ลีมีชื่อเสียงด้านการทำเตียงน้ำ

• Jane was guilty of hitting a cat.
  เจนรู้สึกผิดที่ไปตีแมว

• We’re looking forward to hearing from you soon.
  พวกเราตั้งตารอคอยที่จะได้ยินข่าวจากคุณเร็วๆนี้
