IELTS is an academic English Test covering all 4 important English skills which has the full score 9.0. IELTS applicants can choose to apply whether IELTS IDP or IELTS British Council. There are monthly tests for the 2021 Schedule Test. The test fee is around 7,000 THB which covers 4 skills; Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.

IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. The full score 9.0 will start from score 1 which means a person cannot use English language to score 9 which means a person can very fluently use English language.

Nowadays, IELTS can be tested for many purposes. Apart from IELTS Academic Test and IELTS General, there are IELTS UKVI which is a test for UK Visa application and IELTS Life Skills which is for a person needing to prove one’s speaking and listening skills in level A1 or B1 according to Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

 

IELTS Application

Before IELTS Application, applicants should prepare all documents required. The system has time limit for filling application approximately 20-30 minutes. You need to prepare Identity card or Passport and a credit card for the payment. Other payment methods are also available for those who don’t have credit cards. The application processes are as following;

1. Go to IELTS application test centers; IELTS British Council and IELTS IDP.

2. The system will let you fill in your information about the test. Select which test type you are going to take; IELTS Academic for further education or IELTS UKVI for students in the UK.

3.Then, the system will bring you to application process. For those who already have accounts, you can log in here. For those who don’t have accounts, create account by clicking “Create New User” or “Create an account”.

4. Next, filling your personal information such as name, surname, date of birth. The information on the website and on your identity card or passport must be the same. You will also need to fill in your e-mail, phone number, address and other involved information such as your English language level and your future study plan.

5. Next, recheck all information and the system will bring you to the payment. You can select the payment method either by credit card (online immediately) or other methods. You should pay the fee before the due date which may be different in each test centers.

6. After you finish the application and payment, you will receive a confirmation email. On your test date, do not forget to bring your important documents such as your identity card or passport. (the same documents you use when you make an application)

What are you going to be tested on IELTS?

IELTS test will be divided to 4 skills; IELTS Listening 30 minutes, IELTS Reading Test 60 minutes, IELTS Writing Essay 60 minutes, IELT Speaking approximately 10-15 minutes. For IELTS Speaking, applicants can have a test the same day as other skills or other days depending on the available schedule.

 

IELTS Listening 30 minutes

There are 4 parts, each part has 10 questions. The conversations are about daily situation, education, and training.

Listening Part 1 : The conversation between 2 people about daily life.

Listening Part 2 : The talk from 1 person

Listening Part 3 : The group talk

Listening Part 4 : The talk from 1 person in academic topic

The listening test consists of multiple choices, matching, filling information (plan/map/diagram labelling), filling the form (form, note, table, flow-chart, summary completion), and sentence completion.

Note : The listening test will be played only once and can have many English accent so you should carefully pay attention to the test.

 

IELTS Reading 60 minutes

IELTS Reading Test will test your ability in reading. This part has 40 questions. Basically, the questions are about main idea, skimming, logical argument, and writer’s attitude.

The reading test formats are multiple choice, subjective answer, author’s attitude, matching, word completion, and conclusion.

Note : The articles used in the reading test normally come from books, journals, magazines, and newspaper so applicants can practice and prepare yourself by reading from the website or blog.

 

Score Boost up Technique– Reading Part

Type of questions Normally, the reading questions have 16 different styles and the reading content is mostly about global, local, and cluster.

Techniques for the test

– Always first reading the Heading or Topic, try to understand each topic content as the topic will be a guideline to the whole content and help you get the idea easily and quickly.

– Underline or circle important words such as name, place, date because it can help you correctly link the topic and the main idea.
Attention!

– Though, it is a reading test, the test still needs some written answer so you must be aware of your word spelling and structure. A little mistake may affect your score.

– Time is limited! You should first scan and try to understand the main idea of the article. Remember that one paragraph always has one main idea and sometimes the main idea may be hidden in the topic sentence. Make your time worth.

 

IELTS Writing ( Essay )

Writing – Academic Writing 60 minutes

Comparing to other test types, Academic Writing has a lot of time. It is a general topic in bachelor or above context. The test is divided to Task 1 and Task 2.

Writing Task 1 You will be given a table, graph, or diagram and you need to summarize information into your own words. You may have to write about the work process or explain about the situation.

Writing Task 2 Essay This task requires your point of view or problem solutions and it must be academic writing.

Note: You should spend time for less than 20 minutes for Task 1 and you have to write at least 150 words. (writing with less than 150 words may affect your score). For Task 2, it is an essay writing so it takes more time. You can spend approximately 40 minutes for Task 2. The essay requires at least 250 words, writing less than that may affect your score.

Suggestion: There is no right or wrong in answering the topic question. It depends on your viewpoint. All you need is your supported ideas whether you agree with the topic or not. Also, you should provide examples about your ideas and the essay should have approximately 250 words.

 

IELTS Writing Technique (Essay)

Important Criteria

– To write an essay with 150 words, you will have 3 -4 paragraphs. For essay with 250 words, you should carefully count the words in order not to write less than that.

– Do not write in bullet points or notes styles in both academic or general IELTS tests. Remember! this is a formal test.

– Lexical Resource is one of the 4 criteria to assess your writing essay and not many people know about this. So, when you start to write, use appropriate words and concern about each word meaning. Make it concise, not too wordy. Check your spelling and word order. If the format is right, a chance of getting more score is just around the corner.

Phrase : Phrase is an important part of the sentence when you start writing. You should use the phrase that you exactly know its meaning and spelling. Avoid repeating use the same phrase too often.

Paragraph : Many people forget to use paragraphs. To write all content in one paragraph is not suitable and your score can be deducted. Consequently, you should review your essay structure, starting with introduction, body, and conclusion.

Grammar : Use appropriate grammar! Apart from spelling, grammar and structure are very important in essay writing such as tense, punctuation. You must be very careful as few mistakes can affect your score.

Language : Language using is also significant in writing both academic and general essay. Using properly language can boost up your score.

 

IELTS Speaking

Speaking part can be very concerning for many people especially people who rarely meet or speak English with foreigners. To reduce your concern, practice and preparation are what you need to do. Speaking will be divided into 3 parts and a record will be made during the test.

Test Type

Speaking Part 1 – The questions are general questions such as questions about your personal information, family, education background, and interest. This part will take 4-5 minutes.

Speaking Part 2 – A flash card will be given. you will receive a specific topic from the flash card. You have 1 minute to prepare and 2 minutes to answer.

Speaking Part 3 – The questions will continue from part 2. You have to give your logical answer in your own style. This part takes 4-5 minutes.

Suggestion: After getting the topic from the flash card, summarize the topic ideas, find key words and use these key words to extend your answers. Do not speak too short. Remember you have 4-5 minutes to speak.
