เทคนิคการใช้  Few, A few, Little, A little

คำศัพท์ภาษาอังกฤษที่ใช้บอกจำนวน มีอยู่หลายคำ หากไม่ได้บอกเป็นตัวเลขตรงๆ ก็มักจะบอกแบบรวมๆว่ามากหรือน้อย วันนี้ลองมาดูคำว่า ”น้อย” กันก่อนละกันนะคะ

การใช้ Few, A few, Little, A little ทั้ง 4 คำนี้ มีความหมายเหมือนกัน คือ แปลว่า เล็กน้อย หรือ นิดหน่อย แต่ทั้ง 4 คำนี้กลับมีการใช้งานที่แตกต่างกัน สำหรับเทคนิคโครงสร้างการใช้งาน สามารถแยกออกได้ 5 รูปแบบ ดังนี้ค่ะ

1. a few กับ few : ทั้งคู่มีความหมายว่า นิดหน่อย, เล็กน้อย แต่ a few จะมีจำนวนมากกว่า few (a few > few) เราจะใช้ a few กับ few คู่กับนามนับได้ที่เป็น พหูพจน์ (plural countable noun) เสมอ
a few / few + plural countable noun
a few / few students,

a few / few cats,

a few / few dogs,

a few / few friends,

a few / few books, etc.

2. a little กับ little: 2 คำนี้มีความหมายว่า นิดหน่อย, เล็กน้อย เช่นเดียวกัน แต่ a little จะมีจำนวนมากกว่า little และเราจะใช้ a little กับ little คู่กับ นามนับไม่ได้ (uncountable noun) เสมอ
a little / little + uncountable noun
a little / little money,

a little / little water,

a little / little food,

a little / little milk,

a little / little bread, etc.

3. a few กับ a little: 2 คำนี้มีความหมายว่ามีนิดหน่อย เล็กน้อย แต่ยังพอมีอยู่ ยังมีเพียงพอ ยังเป็นที่พอใจ ซึ่งเราจะใช้ทั้่ง 2 คำนี้กับสถานการณ์หรือประโยคที่มีความหมายในเชิงบวก (positive idea)
a few / a little + positive idea
Fon : Let’s go to the cinema tonight.   ฝน: ออกไปดูหนังกันเถอะคืนนี้
Bom: Ok, I’ve a little money.   บอม: โอเค ฉันมีเงินอยู่นิดหน่อย (เพียงพอที่จะไปดูหนังได้)

There are a few problems at work. มันมีปัญหานิดหน่อยในที่ทำงาน (มีปัญหาแต่ก็พอแก้ไขได้)
I’ve a little water. Let’s drink together.  ฉันมีน้ำอยู่นิดหน่อย มาดื่มด้วยกันเถอะ (มีเพียงพอที่จะแบ่งคนอื่น)

I’m not lonely because I’ve a few good friends.  ฉันไม่เหงาเลยเพราะฉันมีเพื่อนที่ดีอยู่บ้าง (ถึงจะมีน้อยแต่ก็พอใจ)

4. few กับ little: ทั้งคู่มีความหมายว่ามีน้อยมาก แทบจะไม่มี มีไม่พอ ไม่พอใจกับจำนวนที่มี มีน้อยกว่าที่เราคาดหวังจะให้มี ซึ่งเราจะใช้ 2 คำนี้กับสถานการณ์หรือประโยคที่มีความหมายในเชิงลบ (negative idea)
few / little + negative idea

Only few people can afford to pay such prices. มีคนน้อยมากที่จะสามารถจ่ายในราคานี้ (แทบจะไม่มีใครจ่ายไหว)

There seems little hope. มันเหมือนกับจะมีความหวังเล็กๆ (มีน้อยมากจนแทบไม่มีอยู่เลย)
Few people attended the meeting yesterday. เมื่อวานนี้แทบจะไม่มีคนเข้าประชุมเลย

In summer, there is little water in the canal. ในหน้าร้อน แทบจะไม่มีน้ำอยู่ในลำคลอง

5. เราสามารถใช้ few กับ little ซึ่งเป็น negative idea คู่กับ คำนามที่เป็นสิ่งที่เราไม่อยากได้เพื่อให้ประโยคนั้นมีความหมายในเชิงบวกได้ (negative + negative = positive) เช่น
Luckily, they’ve few problems.   โชคดีที่พวกเขาเจอปัญหาเพียงเล็กน้อย
It’s good that there’s little crime in my town.   มันดีที่หมู่บ้านของฉันมีอาชญากรรมน้อยมาก (น้อยจนแทบไม่มี⇒กลายเป็นเรื่องดี)

สรุปการใช้งาน!!  Few / A few + นามนับได้พหูพจน์  ส่วน Little / A little + นามนับไม่ได้  และ

ถ้ามี Article “A” นำหน้า  ความหมายจะเป็นเชิงบวก  แต่หากเราตัด Article “A” ที่นำหน้าออก  ความหมายจะเป็นเชิงลบทันทีค่ะ

1. โดยทั่วไปแล้ว ใช้ some กับประโยค Positive Sentences (ประโยคธรรมดา)  และใช้ any กับประโยค  Negative Sentences (ประโยคปฏิเสธ)  ดังตัวอย่าง

                Ann has bought some new shoes.

                They don’t have any children.

                I’ve got something in my eye.

                He is lazy. He never does any work.

                นอกจากนี้ ยังใช้ any กับคำพูดที่มีความหมายในเชิงลบ (negative meaning)  ดังตัวอย่าง

                He left home without any money. (= He didn’t have any money.)

                She refused to say anything. (= She didn’t say anything.)

2. ใช้ any/ anyone/ anything, etc. อยู่หลัง if เสมอ  ดังตัวอย่างต่อไปนี้

                If any letters arrive for me, can you send them to this address?

                If anyone has any question, I’ll be glad to answer them.

                If you need anything, just ask.

                Buy some apples if you see any.

                ประโยคบางประโยคแม้จะไม่มี if ร่วมอยู่ด้วย แต่อาจมีความหมายเช่นเดียวกับ if ก็ได้  เช่น

                Anyone who wants to take the exam must give me their names before Friday.

                (Anyone ในที่นี้มีความหมายว่า if there is anyone)

                I’ll send on any letters that arrive for you. (any letters ในที่นี้มีความหมายว่า  if any letters)

3. ในประโยคคำถาม โดยปรกติใช้ any เท่านั้น ดังตัวอย่าง

                Do you have any money?

                Has anybody seen Tom?

                แต่อย่างไรก็ตาม นิยมใช้ some ในประโยคคำถามเมื่อหวังว่าจะได้รับคำตอบ yes สำหรับคำถามนั้นๆ เช่น

                What’s wrong with your eye? Have you got something in it? (ผู้ถามรู้สึกว่ามีอะไรเข้าตาของผู้ถูกถาม จึงหวังว่าผู้ถูกถามคงตอบ yes)

                และนิยมใช้ some ในประโยคคำถาม เมื่อเสนอหรือขอในสิ่งหนึ่งสิ่งใด  เช่น

                Would you like some tea?

                Can I have some of those apples?

4. any ยังมีความหมายเป็นอย่างอื่นได้เหมือนกัน any/ anyone/ anybody/ anything/ anywhere อาจมีความหมายว่า ไม่จำเป็นว่าจะต้องเป็น who/ which/ what/ where ก็ได้  เช่น

                You can catch any of these buses. (=ไม่จำเป็นว่าต้องเป็นรถประจำทางคันไหน)

                Come and see me any time you want. (=ไม่จำเป็นว่าจะต้องมาเมื่อไร)

                You can have anything you want for your birthday present.

                We left the door unlocked. Anybody could have come in.

                I’d rather go anywhere than stay at home during my vacation.

                Sing a song.  Which song shall I sing?  Any song.  I don’t care.

5. someone/ somebody/ anyone/ anybody  ต่างเป็น คำเอกพจน์ทั้งหมด  ดังตัวอย่าง

                Someone wants to see you.

                Is anybody there?

                แต่นิยมใช้ they/ them/ their  ข้างหลังของคำเหล่านี้  เช่น

                If anyone wants to leave early, they can  (=he or she can)

                Somebody has spilled their coffee on the carpet.  (=his or her)
