luggage

A tradução de a piece of, nesse contexto, é “uma peça de”, onde “peça” corresponde a “unidade”.

Na frase abaixo, a locução ajuda a definir o número de unidades.

She traveled with two pieces of luggage, each one weighing 20 kilos. (Ela viajou com duas bagagens, cada uma pesando 20 quilos.)

O Toda Matéria preparou uma série de exemplos e tabelas para ajudar você no aprendizado desse tema. Confira!

Countable nouns

Quando um substantivo é contável (countable noun), é possível indicar quantidades através do uso de um numeral.

Exemplos:

  • She has two dogs. (Ela tem dois cachorros.)
  • There are three TVs in my house. (Há três televisões na minha casa.)
  • He ate ten strawberries for dessert. (Ele comeu dez morangos de sobremesa.)

Lista de countable nouns

Uncountable nouns

Os uncountable nouns (substantivos incontáveis) não podem ser contabilizados através de números e, regra geral, são apenas usados no singular.

Exemplos:

  • electricity (eletricidade)
  • rice (arroz)
  • water (água)

Listas de uncountable nouns

Consulte a tabela abaixo e veja alguns exemplos de substantivos incontáveis em inglês, organizados por contexto.

Abstract idea (ideia abstrata)

Substantivo incontável
Tradução

advice

conselho

fun
diversão

help
ajuda

information
informação

pride
orgulho

Para indicar quantidades de ideias abstratas, podemos recorrer ao uso de palavras e locuções como a piece of (indica unidade), a lot of (muito), much (muito) e few (pouco).

Exemplos:

  • She needs a piece of advice regarding her job. (Ela precisa de um conselho em relação ao trabalho dela.)
  • We had a lot of fun at the party. / We had much fun at the party. (Nos divertimos muito na festa.)
  • They need some help. (Eles precisam de alguma ajuda.)
  • Those two pieces of information called my attention. (Aquelas duas informações chamaram a minha atenção.)
  • He had too much pride to admit he was wrong. (Ele tinha orgulho demais para admitir que estava errado.)

Observe que há algumas diferenças entre o português e o inglês no que diz respeito a substantivos contáveis e incontáveis.

Na primeira frase, por exemplo, a palavra “conselho” é contável em português. Podemos contabilizá-la através de números: um conselho, dois conselhos, três conselhos, etc.

Na língua inglesa, o mesmo não acontece com a palavra correspondente advice.

Para contabilizá-la, é preciso utilizar a locução a piece of: a piece of advice (um conselho), two pieces of advice (dois conselhos), three pieces of advice (três conselhos).

Exemplos:

  • She drank two cups of coffee. (Ela bebeu duas xícaras de café.)
  • I need a glass of water. (Preciso de um copo d’água.)
  • Could you please give me some tea? (Você poderia me dar um pouco de chá, por favor?)
  • He brought a jar of orange juice. (Ele trouxe uma jarra de suco de laranja).

Food (comida)

Substantivo incontável
Tradução

bread
pão

butter
manteiga

meat
carne

oil
óleo

rice
arroz

salt
sal

spaghetti
espaguete

Quando queremos indicar a quantidade (plural ou singular) de determinada comida, podemos recorrer ao uso de palavras ou locuções como kilogram (quilograma), slice (fatia), a piece of (um pedaço de), liter (litro), a plate of (um prato de), some (um pouco de), a loaf of (uma unidade de), etc.

Exemplos:

  • I only bought a loaf of bread. (Só comprei um pão.)
  • He bought a kilogram of rice. (Ele comprou um quilo de arroz.)
  • I did not eat much rice today. (Eu não comi muito arroz hoje.)
  • We need 500 grams of spaghetti for the recipe. (Precisamos de 500 gramas de espaguete para a receita.)
  • She only ate two pieces of meat. (Ela só comeu dois pedaços de carne.)

Subject (disciplina)

Substantivo incontável
Tradução

grammar
gramática

poetry

portuguese
português

vocabulary
vocabulário

Enquanto disciplinas de uma instituição de ensino, as palavras acima são classificadas como incontáveis e, por esse motivo, não são flexionadas para a forma de plural.

Exemplos:

  • He has been reading a lot of poetry lately. (Ele tem lido muita poesia ultimamente.)
  • We learned a lot of Italian vocabulary last class. (Aprendemos muito vocabulário italiano na aula passada.)
  • They have three Portuguese classes a month. (Eles têm três aulas de português por mês.)
  • Learning foreign languages grammar is really difficult. (Aprender as gramáticas das línguas estrangeiras é muito difícil.)

Substance (substância)

Substantivo incontável
Tradução

air
ar

iron
ferro

oxygen
oxigênio

Exemplos:

  • There’s too much air in this bag of potato chips. (Há muito ar nesta embalagem de batatas fritas.)
  • We need three iron blades. (Precisamos de três lâminas de ferro.)
  • There are only a few oxygen atoms for every million ozone molecules. (Há apenas alguns átomos de oxigênio para cada um milhão de moléculas de ozônio.)

Gramática da língua inglesa

Uso dos artigos a ou an

Os artigos indefinidos a e an (um/uma) são usados apenas com as flexões de singular dos substantivos contáveis.

Exemplos:

  • I have never seen him wearing a jacket. (Eu nunca o vi usando jaqueta.)
  • My son ate an apple after lunch. (Meu filho comeu uma maçã depois do almoço.)

Nas frases com substantivos incontáveis, o artigo a por vezes é utilizado, mas apenas quando integra locuções que ajudam a especificar determinada quantidade.

É o caso de a bit of (um pouco de), a little (um pouco), a lot of (muito), a pinch of (uma pitada de), a spoonful of (uma colher de), a bottle of (uma garrafa de).

Exemplos:

  • I am going to the supermarket to buy a bottle of oil. (Vou ao supermercado para comprar uma garrafa de óleo.)
  • Add only a pinch of salt. (Adicione apenas uma pitada de sal.)
  • I need a spoonful of butter. (Eu preciso de uma colher de manteiga.)
  • She would like a little sugar in her coffee. (Ela gostaria de um pouco de açúcar no café dela.)
  • Give him a bit of bread. (Dê um pouco de pão a ele.)
  • A lot of attention is being given to that problem.

I’ll smile, I know what it takes to fool this town
I’ll do it ’til the sun goes down and all through the night time
Oh yeah
Oh yeah, I’ll tell you what you wanna hear
Keep my sunglasses on while I shed a tear
It’s never the right time, yeah
I put my armor on, show you how strong I am
I put my armor on, I’ll show you that I am
I’m unstoppable, I’m a Porsche with no brakes
I’m invincible, yeah, I win every single game
I’m so powerful, I don’t need batteries to play
I’m so confident; yeah, I’m unstoppable today
Unstoppable today, unstoppable today
Unstoppable today, I’m unstoppable today
Break down, only alone I will cry out loud
You’ll never see what’s hiding out
Hiding out deep down, yeahyeah
I know, I’ve heard that to let your feelings show
It’s the only way to make friendships grow
But I’m too afraid now, yeah
I put my armor on, show you how strong I am
I put my armor on, I’ll show you that I am
I’m unstoppable, I’m a Porsche with no brakes
I’m invincible, yeah, I win every single game
I’m so powerful, I don’t need batteries to play
I’m so confident; yeah, I’m unstoppable today
Unstoppable today, unstoppable today

Countable and Uncountable Nouns in English for Smart Kids and Teachers Online classes with Pictures

Countable and uncountable nouns
It’s important to distinguish between countable and uncountable nouns in English because their usage is different in regards to both determiners and verbs.
Countable nouns
Countable nouns are for things we can count using numbers. They have a singular and a plural form. The singular form can use the determiner \”a\” or \”an\”. If you want to ask about the quantity of a countable noun, you ask \”How many?\” combined with the plural countable noun.
Singular Plural
one dog two dogs
one horse two horses
one man two men
one idea two ideas
one shop two shops
Examples
She has three dogs.
I own a house.
I would like two books please.
How many friends do you have?
Uncountable nouns
Uncountable nouns are for the things that we cannot count with numbers. They may be the names for abstract ideas or qualities or for physical objects that are too small or too amorphous to be counted (liquids, powders, gases, etc.). Uncountable nouns are used with a singular verb. They usually do not have a plural form.
Examples
tea
sugar
water
air
rice
knowledge
beauty
anger
fear
love
money
research
safety
evidence
We cannot use a/an with these nouns. To express a quantity of an uncountable noun, use a word or expression like some, a lot of, much, a bit of, a great deal of , or else use an exact measurement like a cup of, a bag of, 1kg of, 1L of, a handful of, a pinch of, an hour of, a day of. If you want to ask about the quantity of an uncountable noun, you ask \”How much?\”
Examples
There has been a lot of research into the causes of this disease.
He gave me a great deal of advice before my interview.
Can you give me some information about uncountable nouns?
He did not have much sugar left.
Measure 1 cup of water, 300g of flour, and 1 teaspoon of salt.
How much rice do you want?
Tricky spots
Some nouns are countable in other languages but uncountable in English. They must follow the rules for uncountable nouns. The most common ones are:
accommodation, advice, baggage, behavior, bread, furniture, information, luggage, news, progress, traffic, travel, trouble, weather, work
Examples
I would like to give you some advice.
How much bread should I bring?
I didn’t make much progress today.
This looks like a lot of trouble to me.
We did an hour of work yesterday.
Be careful with the noun hair which is normally uncountable in English, so it is not used in the plural. It can be countable only when referring to individual hairs.
Examples
She has long blond hair.
The child’s hair was curly.
I washed my hair yesterday.
My father is getting a few grey hairs now. (refers to individual hairs)
I found a hair in my soup! (refers to a single strand of hair)

In English grammar, words that refer to people, places, or things are called nouns. They can be classified in many ways.
One way to classify nouns is according to whether they can be counted or not. Many English mistakes are related to this point. By reading through this page, you will understand:
what countable and uncountable nouns are
how to use them correctly in a sentence
Countable (or count) nouns are words which can be counted. They have a singular form and a plural form. They usually refer to things. Most countable nouns become plural by adding an ‘s’ at the end of the word.
For example:
Singular Plural
chair chairs
bottle bottles
student students
Uncountable (or noncount) nouns are words which cannot be counted. Therefore, they only have a singular form. They have no plural forms. These words are thought of as wholes rather than as parts. They usually refer to abstractions (such as confidence or advice) or collectives (such as equipment or luggage).
For example:
Singular
money
furniture
information
