A little และ little แปลว่า “น้อย, นิดหน่อย, นิดเดียว” เป็นสองคำที่อยู่หน้าคำนาม ใช้เพื่อบอกจำนวน ซึ่ง A little จะบอกจำนวนมากกว่า little แต่ก็ยังบอกจำนวนน้อยเหมือนกันนะ และหลังจาก a little และ little  เป็นคำนามนับไม่ได้ (อยู่ในรูปเอกพจน์เสมอ)

 A little / little + Uncountable Noun (คำนามนับไม่ได้)

ตัวอย่าง:

  • a little time = เวลาน้อย
  • little time = เวลาน้อย
  • a little fuel = น้ำมันน้อย
  • little fuel = น้ำมันน้อย
  • a little money  = เงินน้อย
  • little money = เงินน้อย

– A little จะเกี่ยวกับเรื่องความคิดทางบวก หมายความว่า “มีไม่มาก มีบางส่วน”

ตัวอย่างเช่น:

  • I can help you, I speak a little English.
    = ผมสามารถช่วยคุณได้นะ ผมพูดภาษาอังกฤษได้นิดหน่อย
  • Linda has got a little money. 
    = ลินดาพอมีเงินอยู่บ้างนิดหน่อย

– Little จะเกี่ยวกับความคิดทางลบ ซึ่งมีความหมายว่า “นิดเดียว เกือบจะไม่มีเลย” บางทีเราสามารถใช้คำว่า very little แทนก็ได้นะ

ตัวอย่างเช่น:

  • I can’t help you. I speak little English.
    = ผมไม่สามารถช่วยคุณได้ ผมพูดภาษาอังกฤษได้น้อย (แทบจะไม่ได้เลย)
  • Linda has got little money. 
    = ลินดามีเงินน้อยมาก (หรือ ลินดาแทบไม่มีเงินเลย)

วิธีการใช้ A few และ few ต่างกันอย่างไร

A few และ few ก็ได้แปลว่า “น้อย เล็กน้อย นิดหน่อย สองสาม” เป็นสองคำที่อยู่หน้าคำนาม ใช้เพื่อบอกจำนวนเล็กน้อย จำนวนไม่มาก ซึ่ง A few นั้นมีจำนวนมากกว่า few และหลัง A few และ few เป็นคำนามนับได้ที่อยู่ในรูปพหูพจน์

A few / few + Countable Noun (คำนามพหูพจน์ที่นับได้)

ตัวอย่าง:

  • Few people = คนน้อย, ไม่กี่คน
  • A few people = คนน้อย, บางคน
  • Few books = หนังสือไม่กี่เล่ม
  • A few books = หนังสือบางเล่ม
  • Few day = ไม่กี่วัน
  • A few days = บางวัน

– A few จะใช้ในประโยคที่ความหมายเชิงบวก มีจำนวนน้อยแต่ก็มีบ้าง

ตัวอย่าง:

  • Lisa has a few friends.
    = ลิซ่ามีเพื่อนน้อย (แต่ก็มีอยู่บ้าง)
  • She has a few eggs in the fridge.
    = เธอมีไข่สองสามฟองในตู้เย็น

– Few จะเกี่ยวกับความคิดทางลบ ซึ่งมีความหมายว่า “แทบจะไม่มี” บางทีเราสามารถใช้ very few ได้เช่นกัน

ตัวอย่าง:

  • Lisa has few friends.
    = ลิซ่ามีเพื่อนน้อย (แทบจะไม่มีเพื่อนเลย)
  • She has few eggs in the fridge.
    = เธอมีไข่ไม่กี่ฟองในตู้เย็น

วิธีการใช้ A few / Few / A little/ Little อื่น ๆ ที่น่ารู้

Quite a few (ใช้ในกรณี informal) แปลว่า “จำนวนไม่มาก”

ตัวอย่าง:

  • We’ve got quite a few friends in Chiangmai.
    = เรามีเพื่อนที่เชียงใหม่ค่อนข้างน้อย

Little và few มีความหมายค่อนข้างเป็นทางการ ในการเขียนแบบไม่เป็นทางการ (เช่น บทสนทนาทั่วไป) เรามักใช้ only a little/few.

ตัวอย่างเช่น:

  • Only a few people can speak English perfectly.
    = มีเพียงไม่กี่คนที่สามารถพูดภาษาอังกฤษได้เป๊ะ

    คุณเชิญคนมาเข้าร่วมงานเลี้ยงของคุณกี่คน? ~ ก็มีไม่กี่คน

A little / little สามารถใช้ในรูปแบบประโยคเปรียบเทียบ

ตัวอย่างเช่น

  • How are you? ~ A little better, thanks.
    = เป็นไงบ้าง~ ดีขึ้นนิดหน่อย ขอบคุณนะ
  • The new Iphone is little more beautiful than the old one.
    = ไอโฟนรุ่นใหม่จะสวยกว่ารุ่นเก่านิดหน่อย

A little สามารถใช้แทนคำว่า a bit  นำหน้าคำคุณศัพท์และคำวิเศษณ์ ที่มีความหมายเชิงลบ

ตัวอย่างเช่น

  • You must forgive her – she’s a little confused.
    = คุณต้องยกโทษให้เธอ – เธอกำลังสับสนอยู่นิดหนึ่ง
  • They arrived a little late.
    = พวกเขามาถึงช้าไปหน่อย

เพื่อน ๆ ที่ใช้ภาษาอังกฤษน่าจะต้องเคยเจอคำเหล่านี้ และรู้สึกสับสนแน่ ๆ ว่าแต่ละคำแตกต่างกันอย่างไร มีความหมายว่าอะไร ใช้แบบไหนถึงจะถูกหลักไวยากรณ์ วันนี้เราจะพาเพื่อน ๆ ไปเรียนรู้การใช้คำบอกปริมาณในกลุ่ม Few, A few, Little และ A little ผ่านบทเรียนออนไลน์ของ StartDee ถ้าพร้อมแล้วไปลุยกันเลย!

 

Few, A few, Little, A little คืออะไร แปลว่าอะไรบ้าง

few / a few / little / a little คือคำที่ใช้บอกปริมาณของคำนามหรือที่เราเรียกกันว่า Quantifier นั่นเอง และคำบอกปริมาณทุกตัวที่เรายกมาวันนี้ล้วนแปลว่า ‘เล็กน้อย’ หมดเลย แต่เพื่อน ๆ ต้องระวังให้ดีนะ เพราะแต่ละตัวใช้ต่างกัน

 
ใช้ Few, A few, Little, A little แบบไหนถึงจะถูกต้อง

เริ่มจากคู่แรก ‘Few’ และ ‘A Few’ สองคำนี้เขียนคล้ายกัน แถมยังใช้กับคำนามนับได้แบบพหูพจน์ (Plural Noun) เช่น airplanes / friends / countries ทั้งคู่ด้วย

  • คำว่า Few จะให้ความหมายที่แปลว่า “น้อย” ในลักษณะที่แทบจะไม่เหลือสิ่ง ๆ นั้นอยู่เลย จึงอาจทำให้ประโยคมีความหมายในด้านลบ
  • ส่วนคำว่า A few นั้นแปลว่า “น้อย” แต่ยังพอมีอยู่บ้าง ส่งผลให้ประโยคมีความหมายในด้านบวก ฟังแล้วรู้สึกดีกว่านั่นเอง

เพื่อความเข้าใจมากขึ้นไปดูตัวอย่างพร้อม ๆ กันดีกว่า

แองเจล่าแทบจะไม่มีเพื่อนที่โรงเรียนเลย

 

แต่ถ้าหากเพื่อน ๆ ใช้คำว่า A few ก็จะได้ความหมายที่ต่างออกไปแบบนี้

แองเจล่ายังพอมีเพื่อนที่โรงเรียนอยู่บ้าง

 

มาต่อกันที่ ‘Little’ และ ‘A little’ กันเลย การใช้สองคำนี้ จะต้องตามด้วยคำนามนับไม่ได้ (Uncountable Noun) เช่น water / money / sugar รวมถึง คำนามที่จับต้องไม่ได้ (Abstract Noun) อย่างเช่น happiness / love / kindness เป็นต้น

เหมือนกับกรณี Few และ A few 

  • ถ้าหากเพื่อน ๆ ใช้

    Little

    บอกปริมาณของคำนามนับไม่ได้ จะให้ความหมายว่า

    “เล็กน้อย”

    แบบแทบจะไม่เหลือสิ่งนั้นอยู่เลยและทำให้ประโยคดูมีความหมายในด้านลบ

  • แต่ถ้าเพื่อน ๆ ใช้คำว่า

    A little

    นั่นหมายความว่า สิ่งนั้น

    ยังพอมีเหลืออยู่บ้าง

    ทำให้ประโยคนี้ยังมีความหมายในแง่บวกอยู่

 

ตัวอย่าง เช่น

I have little money left in my bank account. 

ฉันแทบจะไม่มีเงินเหลืออยู่ในบัญชีเลย

แปลออกมาแล้วดูเศร้ามากเลยทีเดียว แต่ถ้าเราลองใช้ A little ดูล่ะ

ในขณะที่

I have a little money left in my bank account.

ฉันยังพอมีเงินเหลือในบัญชีอยู่บ้าง

ฟังดูมีความหวังขึ้นมานิดนึงมั้ย! ฮ่า ๆ สังเกตว่าพอใช้ A little แล้ว ความหมายของประโยคยังเป็นด้านบวกอยู่ แม้ว่าจะเหลือเงินอยู่น้อย แต่เราก็ยังพอมีเงินเหลือนะ

 
มาสรุปการใช้ Few, A few, Little, A little กันอีกครั้ง!

ถ้าคำนามของเราเป็นคำนามพหูพจน์ และเราต้องการบอกว่า ‘น้อย’ แต่ยังพอมีอยู่บ้าง เราจะใช้คำว่า A few แต่ถ้าต้องการบอกว่า ‘น้อย’ แบบแทบจะไม่เหลืออยู่เลยเราจะใช้คำว่า Few

Homesteading Couple Hasn’t Bought Groceries in a Year of Self-Sufficient Living


Chris and Stef jumped into selfsufficiency last year when they decided not to buy groceries for an entire year, including staples like salt, sugar, coffee, and flour! Instead, they’ve been growing, catching, raising, and harvesting 100% of their food supply on a small 1/2 acre homestead. They’re only a few weeks away from completing their yearlong homestead challenge and they attribute their success to hard work and to the fact that they live in the Southern Gulf Islands where they have a great growing climate and access to the ocean.
Be sure to follow their@Lovin offtheLand homesteading adventures – they’re going to continue producing most of their own food even after the challenge is done, and may even announce a brand new challenge later this year!

The couple’s four main sources of food have been:
CATCH they catch fish, prawns, and other seafood from the ocean
GROW they grow loads of vegetables, fruit, herbs, and spices on their land
HARVEST they forage for things like mushrooms, berries, nuts, and seaweed
RAISE they raise laying hens, chickens, and turkeys for eggs and meat
Eating only what they produce has drastically reduced the amount of money that Chris and Stef spend on groceries (they still buy hygiene products and other items that are not food and beverages) but a lot of the savings went directly towards building infrastructures like fencing and the chicken coop.
Another advantage of living off the land and sea like this is that they have noticed a huge reduction in the amount of household waste they’re throwing out. Food from the garden doesn’t come in a package!
It was inspiring to meet these two and see all the work they’ve put into learning and working towards their goal of becoming more selfsufficient with their food production.
