There was a saying that if you don’t know what sadness is, how could you treasure the happiness.  And while talking about this saying, I was also thinking of the idioms that could describe this saying -“no gain, no pain”  and “no sweet without sweat”.

Talking about pain, there are also many words that have the same or at least similar meaning and they sometimes are confusing. So, in this article I would like to bring them up. Please read along!.

ตอนที่แล้วได้มีโอกาสนำเสนอ เกร็ดความรู้ภาษาอังกฤษ เรื่อง 

คำว่าเจ็บหรือปวด มีความหมายค่อนข้างใกล้เคียงกันมาก คำว่า เจ็บ ปวดในภาษาอังกฤษ ก็มีให้ใช้หลายคำซึ่งก็มีวิธีการที่ใช้เหมือนกันและต่างกัน คำเหล่านี้คือ ache, hurt, pain, sore

ลองมาดูคำจำกัดความของ คำว่าเจ็บและปวดในภาษาไทยกันก่อน
คำว่า เจ็บ (pain, hurt, sore) คือ ความรู้สึกทางกายเมื่อถูกทุบ ตี บีบ หนีบ กด หรือทำให้เกิดแผล เป็นความรู้สึกที่เกิดขึ้นบริเวณแคบหรือเฉพาะจุดและมักจะเป็นเวลาสั้น

คำว่า ปวด (ache, pain) คือ ความรู้สึกเจ็บทางกายที่ต่อเนื่องเป็นระยะเวลานาน เกิดขึ้นในบริเวณกว้าง เช่น ปวดหลัง. ปวดหัว. ปวดฟัน. นอกจากนี้ ปวด ยังใช้อธิบายความรู้สึกเมื่อต้องการขับถ่ายด้วย เช่น ปวดท้องเบา. ปวดอุจจาระ.

ทีนี้เราลองมาดูกันว่าในภาษาอังกฤษคำว่า เจ็บ ปวด ใช้คำว่าอะไรและใช้อย่างไร และมาดูความแตกต่างของแต่ละคำ ในตอนนี้ ครับ The differences between Hurt, Pain, Sore and Ache

pain  (noun-เพน)  

คำว่า pain เป็นคำกว้างๆ แปลว่า เจ็บหรือปวดก็ได้  คำคุณศัพท์ (adjective)  ก็คือ painful (adj – เพนฟูล)

be in pain มีความหมายกว้างๆว่า ปวดหรือเจ็บ
I was in a lot of pain ผมปวดมาก

pain in + part of your body (ส่วนของร่างกาย) ก็จะแปลว่า ปวด หรือเจ็บที่ตรงนั้นๆของร่างการ เช่น

a pain in the back = ปวดหลัง
a pain in the stomach = ปวดท้อง
a pain in the jaw = ปวดขากรรไกร
a pain in the leg = ปวดขา
a pain in the shoulder = ปวดไหล่
a pain in the eye = ปวดตา

ตัวอย่าง
I have a pain in my back.
ผมปวดหลัง

​I feel a pain in my hands.
ผมรู้สึกปวดมือ

แต่ถ้าเป็น a pain in the arse/ass/butt (อะ เพน อิน ดิ อาร์ส/แอส/บัท)นอกจากจะปวดก้นแล้วยังสามารถเป็นสำนวนมีความหมายว่า ตัวแสบ ได้ด้วย

นอกจากนั้น ยังมีสำนวนที่มีความหมายที่เหมือนกัน คือมีความหมายว่า ตัวแสบ หรือ จอมวุ่นวาย หรือ จอมป่วน แต่เปลี่ยนเอาความเจ็บปวดไปไว้ที่อื่นแทน ได้แก่ a pain the backside (อะ เพน อิน เดอะ แบคไซด์), a pain in the neck (อะ เพน อิน เดอะ เนค) , a pain in the rear (อะ เพน อิน เดอะ เรียร์) คำทั้งหมดนี้ทำหน้าที่เป็น noun phrase แต่ถ้าต้องการเปลี่ยนเป็นคำ adjective ก็เปลี่ยนเป็น pain-in-the-arse/ass/butt/backside/neck

wrist pain (ริสท์ เพน) ปวดข้อมือ

ประเภทและอาการปวด
ทีนี้เมื่อพูดถึงการปวด หรือเจ็บ ซึ่งในที่นี้ก็คือ pain ก็มีคำขยายหรืออธิบายอาการปวดหรือประเภทของการเจ็บหรือปวดดังนี้

แบ่งต่ามประเภทการเกิด

• acute pain (อะคิวท์ เพน) ปวดแบบเฉียบพลัน
• chronic pain (ครอนิค เพน) ปวดแบบเรื้อรัง

แบ่งตามอาการ
คำเหล่านี้เกิดจากการ เอา adjective มาผสมกับ คำนามคือ pain (adj + noun) เพื่อบอกลักษณะอาการของ อาการเจ็บปวด

• mild pain (ไมล์ด เพน) ปวดนิดๆไม่มาก
• sharp pain (ชาร์พ เพน) ก็คืออาการปวด/เจ็บแปลบ
• tingling pain (ทิงเกิลลิง เพน) ปวด/เจ็บเสียว ชาๆ
• stinging pain (สติงกิง เพล)  อาการปวด เหมือนโดยผึ่งหรือแมงต่อย มาจากคำว่า sting (verb – สติง) ที่มีความหมายว่า (ผึ่งหรือแมลง) ต่อย
• electrical pain ปวด/เจ็บเหมือนไฟชอร์ต
• shooting pain (ชูททิง เพน)ปวดแป๊บๆ ปวดที่หนึ่งแล้วย้ายไปอีกทีหนึ่ง (a severe pain that starts in one place then quickly moves to another)

• periodic/intermitten pain (เพียร’ออด’ดิค/อินเทอมิท’เทินทฺ เพน) ปวด/เจ็บเป็นพักๆ ปวดๆหายๆ
• dull pain (ดัล เพน) ปวดตลอดเวลาแต่ไม่รุนแรง (the pain that is not severe but continues for a long time)
• nagging pain (แนกกิง เพน) ปวดไม่มากแต่ไม่หายซะทีทำให้รำคาญ (the pain that continues for a long time and keeps bothering you)
• severe/terrible pain (ซีเวียร์/เทระเบิล เพิน) ปวดแบบรุนแรง
• excruciating pain (เอคซฺครู’ซิเอททิง เพน) ปวดหรือเจ็บอย่างมาก เลือดตาแทบกระเด็น(very severe pain)
• aches and pains (เอคซ์ แอนด์ เพนซ์) อาการเจ็บปวดที่รู้สึกว่าไม่มากมาย(slight feelings of pain that are not very serious)
• smart (verb – สมาร์ท) คือการทำให้แสบ
• cramp (noun – แครมพ์) ปวดแบบตะคริว (writer’s cramp ตะคิวที่นิ้ว)
• crick (noun – คริค) เจ็บหรือขัด เช่ากรณีที่ตกหมอน
• sprain (noun – สเพรน) เคล็ด

อาการปวดอื่นๆ

• labour pains  (เลเบอร์ เพน) ปวดท้องจะคลอดลูก (pain felt by a woman who is starting to have a baby)
• menstrual pain/period pain (เมน’สทรูเอิล/เพียเรียด เพน) ปวดท้องเมนส์หรือปวดท้องประจำเดือน
• colic (คอลิค) อาการปวดท้องเหมือเอาคีมมาบีบ (severe pain in its stomach and bowels)
• gripes (ไกรพฺซ์) อาการปวดท้องแบบเฉียบพลัน (sudden bad stomach pains)
• angina (noun – แอนใจนะ)  คืออาการปวด แบบจุกเสียด อาจจร้าวไปถึงหน้าอก ไหล่ แขนและคอ เกิดจากการที่เลือดใหลไปเลี้ยงหัวใจไม่พอ (a condition marked by severe pain in the chest, often also spreading to the shoulders, arms, and neck, caused by an inadequate blood supply to the heart) อาจจะกล่าวได้ว่า เป็น chest pain ชนิดหนึ่ง บางทีก็เรียกว่า 
• angina pectoris (noun – แอนใจนะ เพค’ โทริส) เป็นชื่อเรียกอีกอย่างของ angina
• migraine (noun – ไมเกรน) ปวดไมเกรนหรือปวดหัวข้างเดียว

ดังนั้นถ้าเอาคำที่เป็นอาการต่างๆเหล่านี้ไปบวกกับส่วนของร่างกายที่ปวดก็จะเป็นการอธิบายอาการปวดของแต่ละที่ได้อีก เช่น

He has a chronic neck pain เขามีอาการปวดคอเรื้อรัง
I feel a tingling pain in my knee. ผมรู้สึกเจ็บเสียวชาๆที่เข่า
John has had a severe back pain for 3 months. จอร์นมีอาการปวดหลังอย่างรุนแรงมา 3 เดือนแล้ว

ซิล์เวียร์ทมารจากอาการปวดร้าวที่หัวหลายชั่วโมงก่อนที่เธอจะได้รับยา

This nagging pain in my stomach has continued after I had a car accident อาการปวดท้องต่อเนื่องที่น่ารำคาญเกิดหลังจากผมเกิดอุบัติเหตุทางรถยนต์

คำว่า nagging มีความหมายถึงอาการที่มีอยู่อย่างต่อเนื่องไม่หายไปใหน ซึ่งสามารถเอาไปขยาย คำอื่นๆได้ เช่น nagging feeling/doubt/suspicion etc  แปลว่า ความรู้สึก หรืออาการสงสัยที่ไม่หายซะที และอีกความหมายหนึ่งอาจจะแปลว่า จู้จี้ขี้บ่น ก็ได้ เช่น a nagging wife ภรรยาที่ขี้บ่น (Note: nagging เอาไว้ขยายนามได้อย่าเดียวนะครับ)

นอกจาก pain แล้วเรายังมีคำอื่นๆที่มีความหมายในทำนองเดียวกันนั้นก็คือ

ache (verb/noun-เอค) 

ache ในที่นี้มีความหมายกินไปถึงอาการเจ็บปวดที่ต่อเนื่องติดต่อกันเป็นเวลานาน ซึ่งก็คืออาการปวดนั่นเอง รวมทั้งอาจจะแปลว่าเมื่อยก็ได้ สรุปก็คือ แปลว่า ปวด ปวดเมื่อย คำว่า ache เป็นได้ทั้งคำนามและคำกริยา คำคุณศัพท์ (adjective) ของ ache ก็คือ aching (adj. – เอคคิง) ส่วนคำที่เป็นกริยาวิเศษ (adverb) ก็คือ achingly (adv- เอคคิงลี่) แปลว่า อย่างเจ็บปวด
