คำว่า แฟน ที่คนไทยใช้เรียกคนรัก เป็นคำทับศัพท์จากคำว่า fan ในภาษาอังกฤษ แต่เอาเข้าจริงแล้ว คำว่า fan ในภาษาอังกฤษไม่ได้ใช้เรียกคนรักเชิงชู้สาวแบบที่คนไทยใช้ แต่หมายถึง ผู้ชื่นชอบ ผู้คลั่งไคล้ เช่น I’m not a fan of Italian food. ก็จะหมายความว่า คนพูดไม่ชอบอาหารอิตาเลียนสักเท่าไร หรือถ้าเราได้เจอคนที่เรานิยมชมชอบผลงานของเขามากๆ ก็อาจจะพูดว่า I’m a big fan of your work. ก็ได้
ส่วนคำว่าแฟนที่คนไทยใช้ ถ้าจะเทียบกับภาษาอังกฤษแล้ว ก็น่าจะตรงกับคำว่า boyfriend หรือ girlfriend มากกว่า หรือถ้าไม่อยากระบุเพศ ก็อาจเรียกว่า partner หรือ significant other ก็ได้ ทั้งนี้ หลายคนเห็นว่าภาษาไทยใช้คำว่า คนรัก เลยเที่ยวไปแนะนำแฟนตัวเองว่าเป็น lover อันนี้อาจต้องระวังสักนิด เพราะพูดคำนี้ปุ๊บจะนึกถึงเรื่องเซ็กซ์ทันที เช่น ถ้าพูดว่า He’s a great lover. ก็จะไม่ได้หมายความว่า ผู้ชายคนนี้เป็นแฟนที่ดี เอาใจใส่ คอยรับฟัง ไม่ลืมวันครบรอบ แต่จะชวนให้เห็นภาพว่าเก่งเรื่องบนเตียงมาก
แฟนไม่ใช่พัดลม แต่เป็นวัด!
คำว่า แฟน ไม่ได้มาจาก fan ที่แปลว่า พัดลม อย่างที่คนชอบเล่นมุกกันแต่อย่างไร เพราะคำว่า fan ที่แปลว่า พัดลม มาจากภาษาอังกฤษเก่า แปลว่า กระบุงหรือกระจาดที่ไว้ใช้ฝัดข้าว ระหว่างฝัดข้าวย่อมเกิดลม ความหมายจึงค่อยๆ เปลี่ยนมาหมายถึง พัด ในเวลาต่อมา และกลายมาเป็นพัดลมไฟฟ้าในที่สุด
อันที่จริงแล้ว fan ย่นย่อมาจากคำว่า fanatic อีกที คำนี้เป็นทั้งนามและคุณศัพท์ มักใช้หมายถึง ผู้คลั่งลัทธิหรือมีความคิดสุดโต่ง ตัวอย่างเช่น religious fanatic ก็จะหมายถึง พวกคลั่งศาสนา เห็นภาพว่าใช้ความรุนแรงไร้เหตุผล อาจยินดีให้เกิดการนองเลือดเพื่อศาสนาของตน ความคลั่งหรืออุทิศตนให้แบบไม่ได้กำกับด้วยเหตุผลแบบนี้นี่เอง ทำให้ fanatic มาใช้หมายถึง นิยมชมชอบ และกลายมาเป็นคำว่า fan แบบที่เราใช้กัน

ส่วนที่วัดและความคลุ้มคลั่งมาเกี่ยวโยงกันได้ ก็เพราะหลายคนที่ไปศาสนสถานอาจเผชิญประสบการณ์ประหลาดเหมือนถูกเข้าสิงหรือประทับร่าง บันดาลให้พูดจาหรือแสดงพฤติกรรมขาดสติ ฉีกเสื้อผ้า กรีดร้อง ลงไปชักดิ้นชักงอ ด้วยเหตุนี้วัดจึงมาเกี่ยวข้องกับความคลุ้มคลั่งได้นั่นเอง
ด้วยเหตุนี้ แฟนที่เรามีๆ (หรือไม่มี) กันนี้จึงไปเกี่ยวกับวัดได้นั่นเอง
แฟนเป็นคำหยาบ
ในช่วงวันวาเลนไทน์ คนโสดเรื้อรังหลายคนได้ยินคำว่า แฟน แล้วอาจแสลงหู รู้สึกว่าคำนี้ช่างหยาบคาย อันที่จริงถ้าว่าด้วยรากศัพท์แล้ว แฟนกับคำหยาบก็เกี่ยวกันจริงๆ นั่นแหละ
คำหนึ่งในภาษาอังกฤษที่ใช้หมายถึง คำหยาบ คือ profanity ประกอบขึ้นจากส่วนเติมหน้า pro– แปลว่า ด้านหน้า รวมร่างกับ fanum ที่แปลว่า วัด แบบที่เจอในคำว่า แฟน ได้ความหมายรวมว่า สิ่งที่อยู่นอกเขตขัณฑสีมาของวัด ด้วยความที่สิ่งที่อยู่ในเขตวัดถือเป็นสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์และบริสุทธิ์ สิ่งที่อยู่นอกวัดจึงกลายมาหมายถึง สิ่งที่เป็นเรื่องทางโลก หยาบช้า หรือ ลบหลู่สิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ ทำนองเดียวกับคนที่ชอบเล่นมุกว่าเข้าวัดไม่ได้เพราะร้อน

ทุกวันนี้ คำว่า profanity ใช้หมายถึง คำหยาบ คำสบถ ผรุสวาท เช่น Pestered by his persistent aunt, who demanded to know whether he was seeing anyone, he lost it and let loose a stream of profanities. ก็จะหมายถึง คุณป้าถามอยู่ได้ว่าคบใครอยู่หรือเปล่า เขาจึงน็อตหลุดแล้วด่ากราดด้วยคำหยาบ
ส่วนรูปคุณศัพท์คือ profane อาจหมายถึง ทางโลก เป็นเรื่องของฆราวาส หรือหมายถึง หยาบช้าลามก ก็ได้ เช่น ถ้าเราเห็นประตูห้องน้ำตามปั๊มน้ำมันที่เต็มไปด้วยคำลามกอนาจาร ก็อาจบรรยายว่า The bathroom stall doors are defaced with profane inscriptions. เป็นต้น
ฉะนั้น วาเลนไทน์นี้ ใครที่มีแฟนหรืออยากมีแฟนจะชวนกันไปเข้าวัดเข้าวาก็คงเหมาะไม่น้อย เพราะเป็นแหล่งเกิดของชื่อเรียกสถานะเลยทีเดียว หรือใครที่เห็นคนเป็นแฟนควงคู่อี๋อ๋อกันแล้วบันดาลโทสะอยากใช้คำหยาบคาย ก็ถือว่ามีส่วนเกี่ยวข้องกันอยู่เพราะสองสิ่งนี้มาจากรากเดียวกัน
