have (แฮฟวฺ) เป็นคำกริยาที่นำมาใช้เป็นกริยาช่วย (helping verb) หรือ เป็นกริยาหลัก (main verb) มีหลักการใช้ดังนี้
1. Forms
กริยา have มี 4 รูปคือ have, has, had, having แต่ละรูปถูกนำมาใช้ดังนี้
1.1 present forms (รูปปัจจุบันกาล)
ใช้ have (หรือตัวย่อ ’ve) กับประธานของประโยคที่เป็นพหูพจน์(plural) หรือสรรพนาม ได้แก่ I, we, you, they
ตัวอย่าง
I have two brothers and one sister.
ผมมีพี่ชาย 2 คน น้องสาว 1 คน
ใช้ has (หรือตัวย่อ ’s) กับประธานของประโยคที่เป็นเอกพจน์ (singular) หรือสรรพนาม ได้แก่ he, she, it
ตัวอย่าง
He has two sons.
เขามีบุตรชาย 2 คน
1.2 past form (รูปอดีตกาล)
มีเพียงรูปเดียวคือ had (ตัวย่อ ’d) ใช้ได้กับประธานและสรรพนามทุก ประเภท ไม่ว่าจะเป็นเอกพจน์หรือพหูพจน์
ตัวอย่าง
We had a car in the past, but now we haven’t.
ในอดีตเรามีรถยนต์คันหนึ่ง แต่เดี๋ยวนี้เราไม่มีรถเลย
1.3 participle forms (รูป -ing/verb3)
รูป participle คือ การลดภาคประธานของข้อความหลัง เพราะซ้ำกับที่ มีอยู่ก่อนแล้ว กรณีนี้ have จะมี 2 รูป คือ having และ had
ตัวอย่าง
I met a man having a Rolls Royce.
มาจาก     (1)  I met a man.
(2)  The man had a Rolls Royce.
(1) + (2)→I met man who had a Rolls Royce.
ลดรูป = I met a man having a Rolls Royce.
2. “have” as a main verb
กรณีที่ have ทำหน้าที่กริยาหลัก จะมีความหมายดังนี้
2.1 have = have got (มี, เป็น)
ตัวอย่าง
Somsak has a cold.
= Somsak has got a cold.
สมศักดิ์เป็นหวัด
I have an idea.
= I have got an idea.
ผมมีความคิดหนึ่ง
2.2 have = possess (เป็นเจ้าของ)
ตัวอย่าง
He has blue eyes.
เขามีดวงตาสีฟ้า
I have a big house.
ผมมีบ้านหลังใหญ่
2.3 have = take, receive, eat, take part in, etc. (เอามา, ได้รับ, กิน, มีส่วนร่วม, ฯลฯ)
ตัวอย่าง
I always have a bath at six in the morning.
(=I always take a bath at six in the morning.)
ผมอาบน้ำเวลาหกโมงเช้าเป็นประจำ
We usually have dinner together.
ปกติเรารับประทานอาหารเย็นร่วมกัน
We had a good time at the party.
เราได้รับความสนุกจากการเข้าร่วมงานเลี้ยง
You need to have a rest for two days.
คุณจำเป็นต้องพักผ่อนสัก 2 วัน
He had an operation yesterday.
เขาได้รับการผ่าตัดเมื่อวานนี้
3. have + someone + verb1
กรณีที่ have หมายถึง การให้ผู้หนึ่งผู้ใดกระทำการอย่างหนึ่งให้ โดยที่ผู้นั้น จะได้รับสิ่งหนึ่งๆ เป็นผลตอบแทนจากการกระทำของตน เช่น เงิน
ตัวอย่าง
You should have the doctor check you heart.
คุณควรจะให้หมอตรวจหัวใจของคุณ
Mother had a man feed her dog while she was away.
แม่ให้ชายคนหนึ่งให้อาหารสุนัขของเธอ ขณะที่เธอไม่อยู่บ้าน
4. have + something + verb3
กรณีนี้ have หมายถึง การที่ให้สิ่งหนึ่งถูกกระทำด้วยผู้หนึ่งผู้ใด แสดง ว่าเป็น passive meaning (ความหมายเชิงถูกกระทำ)
ตัวอย่าง
I am having my bicycle repaired tomorrow.
(=I am having someone repair my bicycle tomorrow.)
พรุ่งนี้ ผมจะเอารถจักรยานไปซ่อม
I had my hair cut last week.
(=I had a barber cut my hair last week.)
ผมให้ช่างตัดผมของผมเมื่อสัปดาห์ที่แล้ว
5. other uses of “have”
have ใช้กับสิ่งต่างๆ ต่อไปนี้ คือ
5.1     meals เช่น
have breakfast    รับประทานอาหารเช้า
have lunch            รับประทานอาหารเที่ยง
have dinner            รับประทานอาหารเย็น
have a meal            รับประทานอาหาร
have something to eat    รับประทานอาหาร
5.2 a party เช่น
have a party        มีงานเลี้ยง
have a meeting    มีการประ,ชุม
have a competition    มีการแข่งขัน
have a game (of football/chess/cards) เล่นเกม (เช่น ฟุตบอล/หมากรุก/ไพ่)
5.3 a lesson เช่น
have an exam            มีการสอบ
have homework        มีการบ้าน
have an appointment    มีนัด
5.4 tea/coffee เช่น
have tea/coffee        ดื่มชา, ดื่มกาแฟ
have a drink            ดื่มเครื่องดื่ม
have a sandwich        รับประทานแซนวิช
have an ice-cream        รับประทานไอศกรีม
have some cheese        รับประทานเนยแข็ง
5.5 a shower เช่น
have a shower            อาบน้ำ
have a bath            อาบนํ้า
have a sauna            อบไอน้ำ
