Idioms หมายถึง สำนวนภาษาอังกฤษ ที่มีคำศัพท์ หรือประโยค ที่มีความหมายไม่ตรงตัว พูดให้เข้าใจง่ายๆ ก็คือ เปรียบเหมือนสำนวนไทย หรือคำสุภาษิต ในบ้านเรานั่นเองค่ะ อาทิเช่น ไก่ได้พลอย ก็ไม่ได้หมายถึงไก่ได้พลอยจริงๆ แต่เป็นการเปรียบเทียบ คนที่ไม่รู้จักคุณค่าของสิ่งที่มีอยู่ ในภาษาอังกฤษเองก็เช่นกัน เขาจะมีสำนวนที่ใช้เปรียบเทียบซึ่งเรียกว่า idiom นั่นเองค่ะ

สำนวนภาษาอังกฤษ (Idioms)

วันนี้เรามีสำนวน idiom พร้อมภาพประกอบเป็นการ์ตูนน่ารักๆ มาฝากเพื่อนๆ อ่านสนุกๆ ไปด้วยกันนะคะ

1. head in the clouds

หมายถึง เพ้อฝัน,ไม่อยู่ในโลกแห่งความเป็นจริง, อยู่ในโลกแห่งความฝัน (ตื่นค่ะซิสสสส)

2. heart in your mouth

หมายถึง  อาการประหม่า ตื่นเต้น ทำตัวไม่ถูก (ประมาณว่าตื่นเต้นตอนพูดบนเวที หรือตอนออกไปพูดหน้าห้องเรียน)

3. hold your horses

ไม่ได้หมายถึง จับม้าเอาไว้นะคะ ในสำนวนภาษาอังกฤษนี้ หมายถึงว่า  เดี๋ยวก่อน แปบนึงก่อน (ประมาณว่า เดี๋ยวแปบนึง ขอทำสิ่งนี้ก่อนนะ)
เพราะม้าคือตัวแทนของความเร็วค่ะ เค้าเลยเปรียบเปรยว่า จับม้าของคุณไว้ก่อน

4. kick the bucket

แปลตรงๆ คือ เตะถัง แต่เมื่อกลายเป็นสำนวน Kick the bucket แปลว่า ตาย

**สำนวนนี้มันมาจากในอดีตที่มีการลงโทษด้วยการแขวนคอ ซึ่งผู้ที่จะถูกแขวนคอ มักจะต้องยืนบนถังใบเล็กที่วางคว่ำอยู่ ทันทีที่เท้าเตะถังออก นั่นก็หมายถึง ผู้ถูกลงโทษก็จะถูกแขวนคอค่ะ

5. dead as a doornail

หมายถึง ลาโลกไปแล้วไม่ต้องสงสัย (ถ้าจะบอกว่าตายแหงแก๋ ฝรั่งเขาเปรียบไว้กับคำว่า ตะปูที่ตอกตรึงประตู ที่เรียกว่า door nail )

6. Bob’s your uncle.

หมายถึง ง่ายๆ แค่นั้นเอง, เท่านั้นแหละ, เรียบร้อย (สำนวนนี้จะไว้ใช้ ตอนนี้เราต้องการบอกว่า สิ่งที่เราจะทำนั้นมันง่ายมากๆ ทำได้แน่นอน ไม่มีทางพลาดอยู่แล้ว)

7.  blue in the face

ไม่ได้หมายถึงว่าหน้าสีนำ้เงินตามภาพนะคะ ในสำนวนภาษาอังกฤษ blue in the face จะหมายถึง ไม่รู้จะพูดอะไรต่อแล้ว (เหมือนเวลาที่พูดอะไรซ้ำๆ เดิมๆ หรือเจอสถานการณ์ที่พูด อธิบายอะไรไป แต่ฝ่ายตรงข้ามไม่ฟัง หรืออาจจะฟังแต่ไม่เกิดปฏิกิริยาตอบกลับ จนทำให้เราเพลียที่จะพูดอะไรซ้ำๆ เดิมๆ )

8. a storm in a teacup

หมายถึง เรื่องขี้ปะติ๋ว, เรื่องเล็กน้อย ทำเรื่องเล็กให้เป็นเรื่องใหญ่ (คนที่ชอบทำเรื่องเล็กให้เป็นเรื่องใหญ่ ปัญหาเล็กๆ น้อยๆ ก็ทำให้บานปลาย)
(สำนวนนี้ใช้กันในหมู่คนอังกฤษ คนออสเตรเลีย)

9.”as cool as a cucumber”

หมายถึง คนที่ใจเย็นมากๆ (ยิ่งเอาไปแช่เย็นแล้วล่ะก็… อูยยย เย็นมากฝุดๆ ฮ่าๆ)

10. a piece of cake

หมายความว่า เรื่องหมูๆ ง่ายเหมือนปลอกกล้วยเข้าปาก
