ไม่ว่าเราจะอ่านบทความภาษาอังกฤษจากที่ไหนก็ตาม สิ่งที่เรามักเจอแน่ๆในบทความคงหนีไม่พ้นกลุ่มคำเชื่อม แต่ปัญหาส่วนใหญ่คือคนอ่านมักแปลไม่ได้ คำเชื่อมมีหน้าที่ทำให้ประโยคลื่นไหล ซึ่งประเภทของคำเชื่อมต่างๆ แบ่งออกเป็น 8 ประเภทใหญ่ๆ ดังนี้
