คำนามนับได้กับนับไม่ได้ Countable and uncountable

คำนาม คือนำใช้เรียก คน สัตว์ สิ่งของ สถานที่ เช่น teacher ,doctor ,dog cat, home ,school ,water, milk etc.

ทุกครั้งที่เราเรียนรู้คำนามใหม่ ๆ นอกจากจะรู้ความหมายของมันแล้ว เราก็ควรจะรู้ด้วยว่า คำนามนั้น เป็นคำนามที่สามารถนับได้ Countable หรือ นับไม่ได้ uncountable

ประโยคบอกเล่า เราใช้คำกับกับนาม คือ a ,an และ some (some ใช้กับกริยาพหูพจน์) เช่น

  1. There is a cat in the garden.

  2. There are some birds in the trees.

ประโยคปฏิเสธจะใช้ a,an และ any some (any ใช้กับกริยาพหูพจน์) เช่น

  1. Is there an orange on the tree?

  2. Are there any chairs in the garden?

  3. How many chairs are there?

สำหรับประโยคคำถามเราจะใช้ a /an, any หรือ how many.

นามนับไม่ได้ Uncountable จะไม่มีรูปพหูพจน์ และใช้รูปกริยาเอกพจน์ และใช้ some

  • There is some milk on the floor.

ประโยคคำถามเราจะใช้ any และ how much เช่น

  1. Is there any sugar?

  2. How much wine is there?

การใช้สำนวนเพื่อแสดงจำนวนหรือปริมาณมาก a lot of

เราจะสามารถใช้สำนวน a lot of กับทั้งนามนับได้ และนามนับไม่ได้ เช่น

  1. There are a lot of apples on the trees.

  2. There is a lot of snow on the road.

ปกติประโยคบอกเล่า จะไม่นิยมใช้ Much หรือ many แต่จะใช้ a lot of แทน เช่น

  1. Bill Gates has a lot of money.

  2. There’s a lot of beer but there isn’t much wine.

  3. There are a lot of carrots but there aren’t many potatoes.

คำนามบางคำสามารถเป็นทั้งนับได้และนับไม่ได้ ขึ้นอยู่กับการใช้ เช่น

  1. Would you like a chocolate?

  2. Would you like some chocolate?

In a box of chocolates, the chocolates are countable and you can take one.

When you have a bar of chocolate the chocolate is uncountable and you can take some.

There are several other nouns that can be both countable and uncountable.

  1. Can I have a glass of water, please?

  2. There’s some broken glass on the pavement.

‘Glass’ is one. Many foodstuffs can be countable or uncountable. Think about the difference between ‘an ice cream’ and ‘some ice cream’ and ‘a coffee’ and ‘some coffee’

การใช้คำแสดงปริมาณ ‘Few/a few’ and little/a little

เราใช้ Few /a few กับนามนับได้ และใช้ little/a little กับนามนับไม่ได้

  1. A few friends are coming round for dinner tonight.

  2. We’ve got a little time before our train leaves. Shall we go to a museum?

A few and a little both mean ‘some’. They have a positive meaning.

A few กับ a little มีความหมายเชิงบวก คือ พอจะมีบ้าง จำนวนหนึ่ง some

  1. I’ve got very few friends here. I feel really lonely.

  2. We’ve got very little time – hurry up or we’ll miss the train.

Few and little both mean ‘almost none’. They have a negative meaning.

Few กับ little มีความหมายเชิงลบ หมายถึงแทบจะไม่มีเลย

Commonly confused words

นามที่สับสน

  1. I’d like an information about train times please

  2. I’d like some information about train times please.

Although ‘information’ is countable in many languages, it is uncountable in English.

ข้อมูลข่าวสาร อาจจะเป็นนามที่สามารถนับได้ในหลายประเทศ แต่ในภาษาอังกฤษ จะเป็นนามนับไม่ได้

  1. Have you had any news from Pete?

  2. I haven’t brought much luggage with me.

  3. Can you give me some advice please?

As well as information, the following words are all uncountable: news, luggage, advice, furniture, weather, travel.

ดังนั้น คำนามที่นับไม่ได้และสับสนอื่นๆ เช่น news, luggage, advice, furniture, weather, travel.
