Hello, everyone. Welcome to ForB’s English lesson video. I’m Kevin, and for today’s video, we’re going to work on the pronunciation of a very common phrase in English, \”I’ve been.\”
\”I’ve been\” is used in a lot of sentences in English, so saying it clearly and correctly is very important. Now, the trouble with this phrase for many students is that close \”v\”, \”b\” combination. Saying the \”v\” and \”b\” so close together for many people can be difficult.
So, a lot of people drop the \”v\” sound completely. They just say \”I been.\” Mmm. That’s not so good. It doesn’t sound correct in English. So, we do need a \”v\” sound there. But, it doesn’t have to be a full, strong \”v.\” So, \”I\”ve been.\” Hmm. That also doesn’t sound natural. So, we need a \”v\” sound but let’s soften it a little bit so it can combine quicker and smoother with the \”v\” sound.
Now, let’s practice our pronunciation. Remember, for the \”v\” sound, we want our top front teeth touching our bottom lip and our bottom lip drags out a little bit. \”v, v.\” Then, we’ll quickly combine it with a \”b\” sound. Again for \”b\”, the \”b\” sound, both our top and bottom lips will be pressed together and then pop out a little bit. \”b, b.\”
So, it’s a very quick transition between the \”vb, vb.\” So we’ve got to go from the \”v,\” \”b\” and then press our lips together quickly to make a \”b\” sound. It’s a little tricky but with practice, you can do it.
Let’s try together. Please repeat after me. \”vb, vb, vb, vb, vb.\” OK? You got it? Well, let’s try it together. Let’s try it in a phrase. \”I’ve been.\” \”I’ve been.\” \”I’ve been.\” \”I’ve been.\” Again, notice the \”v\” is there but a little softer. Let’s repeat after me. \”I’ve been.\” \”I’ve been.\” \”I’ve been.\” Got it?
Three times nice and fast. \”I’ve been.\” \”I’ve been.\” \”I’ve been.\” OK. Very good. Now again, we do need a \”v\” sound, but we can soften it so we can quickly switch to the \”b\” sound but don’t forget you must have a \”v\” sound to make a good, smooth sounding \”I’ve been.\”
