I discovered you just today and this is the second video I see. I'm amazed.
Language is a matter of sound. A baby's first word is mama. The baby learns by sound and repetition of sounds until the baby correlates what the sounds mean. What would a mother do to teach her infant child digitally speaking, say oh, here is a GIF and show a moving image to her baby with her iphone and teach the baby that way? Are you saying TS its O.K. to type OMG as a child with an iphone using thumbs on an iphone and that's going to be modern digital speech for all the world to learn verbally as humans talk to each other? I guess a mother should teach her infant by putting an iphone in its crib. That could take a few thousand years, or tens of thousands of years, or hundreds of thousands of years. People are learning to speak with fewer words in a concise sort of way which is good, but I dont know how your going to teach a baby to say OMG so it can communicate to its mother. So far, there are three comments before me and all of them have good sentence structure and precision. What would engineers do if they had to build a bridge? More paragraphs? 🙂 TS, good luck with your productions and hitting the internet algorithm inputs. I just subscribed. I will not like and share though. 🙁 I could go on and on for days. Language fascinates me.
Isn't it a valid option to take the position that both bad grammar and grammar policing are bad? For example, that it would be nice if people had a better level of grammar, but oftentimes it's not worth the disruption to point out someone's grammatical error. Maybe as an analogy, someone at a social gathering might have made a gesture that was not ideal (or just acting stuck-up in a subtle way, etc.) but not outright rude either — somewhere in between polite and rude. While this person should have behaved better, it's still not enough of a reason for someone to confront them about it and make a scene.
As an editor, I am concerned with clarity in context with the intended audience. Language is always in flux. There is no need to go digging on the shelf for a dusty style manual just to prove somebody wrong. The only thing that I will be a jerk about when it comes to grammar is the Oxford comma. Omit at your own risk.
I'm one of those editors who thinks my job depends on the type of piece I'm editing. I don't edit an academic paper (not my favourite) the way I would a blog post or a novel. I know there are purists who disagree, but I think the written word is for the purpose of communicating a message to a target audience. To me the message is more important than perfect punctuation, spelling, and grammar. Horrors! 🙂
