In this lesson we are going to learn what is an ADJECTIVE CLAUSE.
WHAT IS AN ADJECTIVE CLAUSE?
An adjective clause is a clausea group of words that has the subjectverb combination that acts as an adjective in a sentence and modifies the noun that comes before it.
It always starts with the following conjunctions:
Who, whom, that, which, when, where, whose, and why.
An adjective clause is a dependent clause and cannot stand on its own. It’s a part of a sentence.
Let’s take some examples now!
1. The person (who taught me yoga) lives in the woods.
2. Arpit, (who is a good friend of mine), works in Qatar airways.
3. Jyoti is the girl (whom I admire a lot).
4. I love the book (that my brother gifted me last month).
5. The movie (which we watched last night) was amazing.
6. Jaipur, (which is also known as the Pink City), has a rich heritage.
7. This is the time (when he sleeps).
8. The place (where they have kept the money) is quite far away from here.
9. The guy (whose parents died in a car accident last week) is in a big trouble.
10. The reason (why we lost the match) is that we did not practice enough.
Essential adjective clause vs Nonessential adjective clause.
An essential adjective clause is a clause that gives essential or defining information about the noun it modifies. An essential adjective clause is not offset using commas.
Examples
1. People (who work out daily) have less diseases.
2. The movie (that we watched yesterday) was amazing.
3. The person (who taught me yoga) lives in the woods.
A nonessential adjective clause gives non essential or non defining information about the noun it modifies. And if you remove it from the sentence the meaning of the sentence does not get changed. We use commas to offset a non essential adjective clause.
Examples
1. Arpit, (who is a great friend of mine), works in Qatar airways.
2. The Taj Mahal, (which is very beautiful), is in Agra.
Key points:
1. That is not used in an adjective clause to give non defining or non essential information. It is used in an adjective clause to give only essential information about the noun it refers to.
2. If you want to give non essential information about a person, use WHO.
3. If you want to give non essential information about a thing, use which.
4. That is the only pronoun which is used to give information about both people and things.
