การเปรียบเทียบขั้นกว่า (Comparative)
สิ่งที่เรามักจะทำกันบ่อยๆ ในการสื่อสารนั่นก็คือการเปรียบเทียบระหว่างสองสิ่ง อาจจะเป็นการเปรียบเทียบระหว่างร้านอาหารสองที่ ตัวเลือกสำหรับตำแหน่งงาน หรือหนังที่จะไปดูในโรงหนัง แล้วการจะเปรียบเทียบในภาษาอังกฤษทำได้อย่างไรกันล่ะ?
อะไรคือขั้นกว่า(comparative)
เราใช้ขั้นกว่าเพื่อกล่าวถึงคนหรือสิ่งของว่าแตกต่างกันอย่างไร โครงสร้างของประโยคคือ
คำนาม(ประธาน) + กริยา + คำคุณศัพท์ขั้นกว่า + than + คำนาม (กรรม)
เช่น
Mike is taller than Jane.
That cat is bigger than this cat.
Mike runs faster than Tom.
การเปรียบเทียบ
คำคุณศัพท์เพื่อแสดงการเปรียบเทียบช่วยให้เราอธิบายถึงความต่างระหว่างคนหรือสิ่งของ การจะพูดว่า บางคนหรือบางสิ่ง มีระดับที่เหนือกว่า ไม่ว่าจะเป็นในเรื่องของปริมาณ ขนาด หรือลักษณะ เราจะใช้ ‘more ในทางตรงกันข้าม เวลาที่เราจะบอกว่า บางคนหรือบางสิ่ง อยู่ในระดับที่ด้อยกว่า ไม่ว่าจะเป็นในเรื่องของคุณภาพ ขนาด หรือลักษณะ เราจะต้องใช้ ‘less’

วิธีการใช้ ‘more’ ขึ้นอยู่กับความยาวของคำ มีสองกรณีด้วยกัน
1. การใช้ More สำหรับคำที่มี 3 พยางค์หรือมากกว่าให้เติม more ข้างหน้าคำคุณศัพท์ เช่น
Reading is more interesting than watching TV.
Your house is more expensive than mine.
2. คำที่มี 2 พยางค์ลงท้ายด้วย ed, ful, ing,less, ous ใช้ more นำหน้า เช่น
This game is more boring than the other one.
This actor is more famous than that actor.
2. สำหรับคำพยางค์เดียวให้เติม er หลังคำ แบ่งออกเป็นสามแบบคือ
2.1 โดยทั่วไปเติม er ได้เลยเช่น
Taking the bus is cheaper than taking the car.
2.2 คำที่ลงท้ายด้วย y ให้ตัด y ออกแล้วเติม ier เช่น
This movie is funnier than that movie.
My bedroom is dirtier than his bedroom.
2.3 คำที่มีสระเสียงสั้นตัวเดียวและตัวสะกดตัวเดียวให้เติมตัวาะกดอีกตัวก่อนเติม er เช่น
She looks thinner than her sister.
Today it’s hotter than yesterday.
3. คำบางคำเปลี่ยนรูปเมื่อเป็นขั้นกว่า เช่น
good – better
bad – worse
far – further (U.K. English) farther (US English)
เช่น
Your cooking is better than my cooking.
Their house is further from here than our house.
