I use semicolons at work alot…. Because I'm a programmer.
an english teacher was pissed at me when i used two explanation marks instead of one . like this !! instead of ! ilkj.n,m eufjklrq, we're all ILLITERATE

You'll need a semicolon if you write a list inside a list. For example: on my desk is an exciting, riveting, wonderful novel; an expensive, robust, metallic watch; and a wallet with dollars in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100.
A list is an ideal place to find a semicolon because all its items are related to each other by the fact that they're on the same list, but different from one another by the fact that they are different items in that list. Other usages, such as replacing commas or periods to join two phrases (for example: "I love semicolons; they're hard to use."), are also valid, but can be less clear than a list.

I use semicolons frequently. Not 100% sure I'm using them correctly. More concerned about use of commas, tbh. "I like cooking puppies and children" vs "I like cooking, puppies and children" – the latter does not make you sound like Hannibal Lecter's even-more-vile brother.

In Spanish I use it to add an idea that is the explanation of the first one. I've been using it like that in English…
"It was imposible to get in the room; the door was closed"
How I use semi colon: as a replacement for the words " for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so" when connecting two distinct but separate ideas.
Idk if that's correct, but it works.
I remember hitting college Composition classes, questioning the rules they used for writing (especially comma usage) and being flatly told that the rules I learned in K-12 were just wrong and useless. Nothing exemplified how malleable language is to me more than being told that the entire rule set I spent 10+ years struggling to learn l needed relearning.
Something I realized is that even though there's no set grammatical rules for talking online, most of us flow towards typing a certain way depending on the situation. For example, if I'm talking with friends, I'm more relaxed with punctuation, but if it's in a Youtube comment or especially an email, I feel more inclined to use punctuation to get my thoughts across more clearly. Maybe that's because when I'm with friends, they already can get what I'm talking about? And it feels easier to clarify my thoughts right there. Idk 🤷
punctuation was invented by a time traveller to ensure the creation of emoticons :]
My rules for college papers:
Replace the 3rd and 13th therefore with wherefore.
Replace 1 period per page with a semicolon.

Im kinda confused because i learnt this in primary school and still remember it can either join two clauses and group / list words and information (not this is off of memory and i have not finished the video so this may be incorrect).

My Latin teacher summed I'd up pretty good when she once said: "Semikolons benutzt ma', wenn ma' nich die Eier hat einen Punkt zu setzen."
Which means:
"You use a semicolon if you don't have the balls to use a period."
I thought ";" was only used in some coding languages
