ประโยค คือส่วนที่สำคัญที่สุดในโครงสร้างไวยากรณ์ภาษาอังกฤษ เพราะในชีวิตประจำวัน เรามักพูดออกมาเป็นประโยค เพื่อสื่อสารให้ผู้อื่นเข้าใจ แต่ประโยคนั้นประกอบขึ้นด้วยคำต่างๆ ดังนั้นถ้าเราจะเริ่มศึกษาวิธีการแต่งประโยค เราจึงต้องเริ่มต้นศึกษาจากคำก่อน
Words
ชนิดของคำในภาษาอังกฤษมี 8 ชนิดด้วยกัน คือ
1. Nouns (คำนาม)
เช่น God, man, John, American, friend, star, stone, air, mile, beauty ใช้เรียกคน สัตว์ สิ่งของ แนวคิด นามธรรม และความเชื่อ
2. Pronouns (คำสรรพนาม)
เช่น I, you, he, she, my, your, his, that, who, what, which, one, some ใช้เรียกแทนคำนาม จะได้ไม่ต้องเอ่ยนามนั้นซ้ำอีก
ตัวอย่าง:
John works at the hospital.
He is a doctor.
Kate is my friend.
I know her well.
A book is on the desk.
The book which is on the desk is about history.
The children are playing outside.
Some of them are crying.
3. Adjectives (คำคุณศัพท์)
ใช้ขยาย noun กับ pronoun เพื่อบรรยายให้เห็นลักษณะของ noun กับ pronoun ชัดเจนยิ่งขึ้น แบ่งออกเป็น adjective สำหรับบอกลักษณะ บอกปริมาณ และบอกจำนวน
– Qualifier Adjectives หรือคำคุณศัพท์ที่ใช้บอกลักษณะ
เช่น beautiful, healthy, kind, poor, fast, dry, black
ตัวอย่าง:
Noun
Adj. + Noun
Adj. + Adj. + Noun
An apple
A red apple
A crisp, red apple
A girl
A tall girl
A beautiful, tall girl
– Quantifier Adjectives หรือคำคุณศัพท์ที่ใช้บอกปริมาณ
เช่น many, much, few, little
ตัวอย่าง:

– Numeral Adjectives หรือคำคุณศัพท์ใช้บอกจำนวนนับลำดับที่
เช่น one, two, three, first, second

4. Verbs (คำกริยา)
เช่น go, take, fight, speak, sleep, wait
ใช้แสดงกริยาอาการต่างๆ เป็นส่วนสำคัญในภาคแสดงของประโยค
นอกจากนี้ คำกริยายังแบ่งได้เป็น กริยาแท้ และกริยาไม่แท้
– Finite Verbs กริยาแท้หรือคำกริยาที่สามารถผันตามประธานและรูปกาลได้
– Non-finite Verbs (Verbals) กริยาไม่แท้ ไม่สามารถเปลี่ยนรูปได้
ตัวอย่าง: verb “be” มีกริยาในรูปต่างๆ ดังนี้
Finite Form
Am, is, are, was, were
Non-finite Form
Infinitive = to be
Present Participle = being
Past Participle = been
Gerund = being
5. Adverbs (คำวิเศษณ์)
เช่น well, fast, long, gently, recently, again, yesterday, soon, rather, perhaps, not
ใช้ขยาย verb, adverb, adjective, preposition, conjunction, phrase, sentence เพื่อเพิ่มความหมายให้กับสิ่งที่ถูกขยาย
ตัวอย่าง:
ขยาย verb
He walks.
He walks fast.
ขยาย adverb
The dog grows quickly.
The dog grows very quickly.
ขยาย adjective
It is hot today.
It is surprisingly hot today.
ขยาย preposition
My cat sits beside me.
My cat sits right beside me.
ขยาย conjunction
She will come though it is late.
She will come even though
it is late.
ขยาย phrase
The hotel is on the top of
the mountain.
The hotel is nearly on the top of
the mountain.
ขยาย sentence
The bus leaves at 10 p.m.
However, the bus leaves at
10 p.m.
6. Prepositions (คำบุพบท)
เช่น at, in, into, of, for ใช้เชื่อมกริยากับส่วนต่างๆ ของประโยค เพื่อบอกเวลา สถานที่ และทิศทาง ทำให้ประโยคสมบูรณ์
ตัวอย่าง:
In
He is in the pool.
On
There is a mark on your shirt.
At
He always arrives late at school.
Against
A woman is standing against the door.
Up to
I sleep up to 8 hours a day.
7. Conjunctions (คำสันธาน)
เช่น and, but, or, nor, that, if, because ใช้เชื่อมคำหรือประโยค มีทั้ง conjunction แบบคล้อยตาม ขัดแย้ง และเป็นเหตุเป็นผล
ตัวอย่าง:
And
Thais eat with a spoon and fork.
But
BMW is beautiful but expensive.
Or
Would you like coffee or tea?
Neithe…nor
Neither I nor she speaks Spanish.
Because
Tim passed the exam because he studied hard.
8. Interjections (คำอุทาน)
เช่น oh, alas, hurrah ใช้แสดงความรู้สึกหรืออารมณ์ต่างๆ
ตัวอย่าง:
Well
Well! That’s expensive.
Oh
Oh! That’s great.
ในภาษาอังกฤษคำหนึ่งคำอาจจะเป็นได้มากกว่าหนึ่งชนิด แต่เมื่อใช้ในบริบทหนึ่งๆ แล้ว คำๆ นั้นจะทำหน้าที่ได้แค่เพียงอย่างเดียว เช่น อาจจะเป็น verb หรือ noun หรือ อาจเป็น adverb หรือ preposition ก็ได้ ตัวอย่างเช่น
Look:
Look at that. (Look = verb)
Let me have a look at that. (look = noun)
Walk:
He walked all the way here. (walked = verb)
He is taking a walk. (walk = noun)
In:
Is John in? (in = adverb)
In the house. (In = preposition)
Up:
He climbed up. (up = adverb)
Climb up the wall. (up = preposition)
After:
He looked before and after. (after = adverb)
