ก่อนที่จะดูว่าคำเชื่อมมีกี่ประเภทแล้วใช้งานได้อย่างไรบางเราลองดูประโยคของคำเชื่อมตอนที่มีคำเชื่อมกับตอนที่ไม่ใช้คำเชื่อมแตกต่างกันอย่างไรดังนี้

ยกตัวอย่างประโยคที่ง่ายๆ เช่น ฉันชอบแมว.  ฉันชอบหมา. ฉันชอบลิง. มันเป็นประโยคเดียวแต่คนอ่าน คนฟังจะไม่เห็นความเกี่ยวกัน ดูเหมือนเป็นสามประโยคสั้นๆ มากกว่าใช่ไหมคะ?! แล้วถ้าตอนนี้เราลองใส่คำเชื่อมเช่น คำว่า “และ” (and) ประโยคจะกลายเป็น ฉันชอบแมว และ หมาและ ลิง ความหมายไม่เปลี่ยนไปแต่ประโยคดูดีขึ้น ไม่ต้องใช้คำซ้ำๆ กันด้วย ง่ายๆ แต่มีประโยคช์ดีมากๆ เพราะว่าในประโยคนั้นมีคำเชื่อม

คําเชื่อมภาษาอังกฤษ conjunction สามารถแบ่งได้ 3 ประเภทด้วยกันคือ

3. Correlative Conjunctions

เราจะไปเฉาะลึกแต่ละประเภทของคำเชื่อมและการใช้งานดังนี้

1. หลักการใช้ Coordinating conjunctions 

หลักการใช้ Coordinating conjunctions  คือผู้เรียนแค่คำคำศัพท์ FAN BOYS ก็สามารถเอามาใช้งานได้แล้วเพราะมันเป็นตังอักษรย่อจากพวกคำเชื่อมอยู่ในประเภทหนึ่งที่ได้เรียกว่า Coordinating conjunctions คำว่า FAN BOYS ประกอบด้วยคำเชื่อม For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So. ในนั้นแต่ละคำเชื่อมก็จะมีความหมายที่แตกต่างกัน ต้องขึ้นอยู่กับกรณีต่างๆ เราจะใช้ให้ประโยคได้สมบูรณ์แบบและอย่างเหมาะสม

Note: สำหรับคำเชื่อมว่า  since: ตั้งแต่, เพราะว่า, เนื่องจากว่า จะมีโครงสร้างภาษาอังกฤษขั้นอยู่กับสถานการณ์เละความหมายที่อยากสื่อเช่น ถ้าแปลว่า “ตั้งแต่” ใช้เชื่อมระหว่างประโยค Present Perfect (Subject + have/has + V3) หรือ Present Simple (Subject + V1(ประฐานเอกพจน์เติมs) กับ Past Simple Subject + V2 เติม ed บ้าง,ผันบ้าง เช่น

He has worked hard “since” his father died. (Present Perfect, Past Simple)
ถ้าแปลว่า “เพราะว่า, เนื่องจากว่า” ให้วางไว้หน้า Clause ของประโยคแรก เช่น
“Since” he doesn’t learn English, he can’t speak it. (เนื่องจาก (เพราะ) เขาไม่ได้เรียนภาษาอังกฤษ เขาจึงพูดไม่ได้)

อย่างที่บอกไปแล้วว่าตัวเชื่อมนี้จะเป็นการเชื่อมประโยครองกับประโยคหลักเข้าด้วยกัน ดังนั้นให้สังเกตดีๆ ถ้าเป็นประโยครองจะตามหลังด้วยคำเชื่อมดังกล่าว ในขณะที่ประโยคหลักไม่ต้องใช้คำเหล่านี้

• “after”: I went for a swim after breakfast. แปลว่า ฉันไปว่ายน้ำหลังอาหารเช้า
• “because” : My sister she didn’t go to school yesterday because of fever. แปลว่า พี่สาวฉัน เธอไม่ได้มาโรงเรียนเมื่อวานนี้เนื่องมาจากการเป็นไข้
• “before” : Before going to Bangkok, you should read the guide book.
  แปลว่า ก่อนการเดินทางไป Bangkok คุณควรอ่านหนังสือนำเที่ยว

3.หลักการใช้ Correlative Conjunctions

เมื่อคุณอ่านหนังสือหรือดูหนังคงเจอหมู่คําเชื่อมภาษาอังกฤษแบบที่สามคือ Correlative Conjunctions ที่มีหน้าที่เชื่อมประโยคที่มีน้ำหนักเท่าๆกัน เยอะเหมือนกัน เช่นพวกคำว่า 

• Both … and … แปลว่า ทั้ง … และ …ยกตัวอย่างให้เข้าใจง่ายๆ เช่น ประโยคอังกฤษดังนี้  I enjoy both singing and dancing. แปลว่า ฉันมีความสุขกับการร้องเพลงและการเต้นดังนั้นคำเชื่อม Both … and …นี้จะใช้ในกรณีเชื่อมต่อประธานของประโยคเข้าด้วยกัน (เมื่อมีจำนวนเท่ากับ 2)

• Neither … nor … แปลว่า ไม่ทั้ง … และ …ยกตัวอย่างให้เข้าใจง่ายๆ เช่น Neither Namthip nor I want to go there.
  แปลว่า ทั้ง Namthip และฉันไม่ต้องการไปที่นั่น จากนั้นจะเห็นได้เลยว่าคำเชื่อม Neither … nor … ใช้ในประโยคและมีความหมายคือ ไม่ใช่ทั้งสิ่งแรกและสิ่งที่สอง

• Either

  … or … แปลว่า ถ้าไม่ … ก็ …ยกตัวอย่างให้เข้าใจง่ายๆ เช่น I can’t remember. It’s either Yellow or Orange. แปลว่า ฉันจำไม่ได้ ถ้าไม่สีเหลืองหรือสีส้ม ดังนั้นผู้เรียนสามารถใช้คำเชื่อมนี้ เมื่อต้องการสื่อความหมายว่า ไม่อันใดก็อันหนึ่ง 

• Not only … but also … แปลว่า ไม่เพียงแค่ … แต่ … ด้วย ยกตัวอย่างให้เข้าใจง่ายๆ เช่น Namthip is not only Beatiful, but also a great teacher. แปลว่า Namthip ไม่เพียงแค่สวยเท่านั้น แต่ยังเป็นเป็นครูที่สุดยอดอีกด้วย ดังนั้นผู้เรียนสามารถใช้คำเชื่อมนี้ เมื่อสื่อความหมายว่ายังมีอีกสิ่งหนึ่งที่นอกเหนือจากสิ่งที่กล่าวในตอนแรก มักนิยมใช้ในภาษาอังกฤษสำหรับการเน้นย้ำ

• as…as แปลว่า ….เท่ากับ….. ยกตัวอย่างให้เข้าใจง่ายๆ เช่น  She is as tall as me แปลว่า เธอสูงเท่ากับฉัน/ She runs as fast as I do. แปลว่า เธอวิ่งเร็วเท่าฉัน  

• just as…so  แปลว่า …..เหมือนกับที่….. just as I thought.  แปลว่า เหมือนกับที่ฉันคิด

• no sooner…than   ยังไม่ทันที่……ก็……หรือ เกือบทันทีที่ ยกตัวอย่างเช่น No sooner had I started mowing the lawn than it started raining แปลว่า เกือบทันทีที่ฉันได้เริ่มตัดหญ้าฝนก็เริ่มตก

• rather…than …….ดีกว่า…. ยกตัวอย่างเช่น  She would rather live in Chonburi than in Bangkok. แปลว่า เธอชอบอาศัยอยู่ในชลบุรีมากกว่ากรุงเทพ

• whether…or แปลว่า ว่า…..หรือ…. ยกตัวอย่างเช่น   Whether you like it or not, you have to pay the fine. แปลว่า ไม่ว่าคุณจะชอบหรือไม่ก็ตาม คุณก็ต้องจ่ายค่าปรับอยู่ดี

• the…the  แปลว่า ยิ่ง…..ยิ่ง… ยกตัวอย่างเช่น    The sooner, the better. ยิ่งเร็วเท่าไหร่ก็ยิ่งดี (สำนวน)

คําเชื่อมภาษาอังกฤษพร้อมวิธีการใช้งานง่าย
