either ออกเสียงได้ 2 อย่าง คือ ไอ-เทอร์ และ อี-เทอะ คำๆ นี้ทำหน้าที่ได้หลายอย่างคือ adverb, determiner และ pronoun
1. กรณีที่ทำหน้าที่ adverb
เมื่อ either ทำหน้าที่ adverb มีหลักที่ควรทราบอยู่ 2 อย่าง คือ ประการแรก ใช้ either แทนคำว่า too และ also ถ้าหากประโยคที่เอ่ยถึงครงแรกเป็นปฏิเสธ ทั้งนี้เพื่อแสดงถึงความคล้อยตามกันของเนื้อความ ลองพิจารณาเปรียบเทียบตัวอย่างต่อไปนี้
I like fish                             – I do too.
ผมชอบปลา                          ผมก็ชอบด้วยเช่นกัน
I don’t like music.           – My mother doesn’t either.
ผมไม่ชอนดนตรี                  คุณแม่ของผมก็ไม่ชอบเหมือนกัน
I don’t enjoy tennis, and I don’t much like swimming either.
ผมไม่ชอบเล่นเทนนิส และผมเองก็ไม่ชอบว่ายน้ำด้วยเช่นกัน
เพื่อจะได้จดจำโครงสร้างการใช้ either จากตัวอย่างดังกล่าวได้ง่ายขึ้น จึงขอสรุปกฎดังนี้
negative sentence, (and) subject + negative verb + either
ประการที่สอง เราใช้ either กับ or เมื่อพูดถึงทางเลือก (alternative) ซึ่งมี 2 ทางหรือมากกว่า
ตัวอย่าง
You can either come with me now or walk home.
คุณมากับผมก็ได้หรือจะเดินกลับบ้านก็ได้ (ให้เลือกเอา)
Either you leave this house or I’ll call the police.
คุณจะออกไปจากบ้านหลังนี้หรือจะให้ผมเรียกตำราจ (ให้เลือกเอา)
You can either have soup, fruit juice or melon.
คุณเลือกเอาว่าจะเอาซุป นํ้าผลไม้ หรือแตงโม
หมายเหตุ ในกรณีที่ either… or ใช้เชื่อม subjects หรือทำทน้าที่conjunction สิ่งที่ควรจะระวังก็คือ กริยาภายในประโยคจะต้องใช้ให้สอดคล้องกับ subject ตัวที่อยู่ใกล้กับกริยามากที่สุด
ตัวอย่าง
Either Jim or Jane was responsible for mailing the letter.
จิมหรือเจนก็ได้ช่วยรับผิดชอบส่งจดหมายฉบับนี้ให้ที
Either you or I am mad.
ไม่คุณก็ผมที่บ้า
(สังเกตประโยคแรกใช้กริยา was ซึ่งสัมพันธ์กับ subject “Jane” และประโยคที่สองใช้กริยา am สัมพันธ์กับ subject “I”)
2. กรณีที่ทำหน้าที่ determiner
คำว่า determiner ในที่นี้หมายถึง คำที่วางไว้หน้า noun เช่น either day, either side, either car ฉะนั้น either เมื่อใช้ในหน้าที่ดังกล่าวนี้ก็อาจจะเรียกว่าเป็น adjective ที่ไปขยาย noun นั่นเอง โดยปกติ either เมื่อเป็น determiner หมายถึง one or the other แปลว่า “คนใดคนหนึ่ง, ด้านใดด้านหนึ่ง, วันใด วันหนึ่ง ฯลฯ” แต่บางครั้ง either อาจจะหมายถึง both แปลว่า ทั้งสองคน, ทั้งสองด้าน ฯลฯ ลองพิจารณาตัวอย่างต่อไปนี้
Come on Tuesday or Wednesday. Either day is O.K.
มาวันอังคารหรือวันพุธ วันใดวันหนึ่งก็ได้
There were roses on either side of the door.
มีดอกกุหลาบอยู่ทั้งสองด้านของประตู
หมายเหตุ โปรดสังเกตประโยคแรก เราใช้ noun รูปเอกพจน์กับ either ส่วน ประโยคที่สอง ใช้ plural noun กับ both เพราะ either side หมายถึง both sides)
สิ่งที่ควรจดจำอีกประการหนึ่งก็คือ เมื่อ either พบ noun จะใช้ determiner อื่นด้วยอีกไม่ได้ อาทิ determiners พวก article, possessive หรือ demonstrative เช่น เราอาจจะพูดว่า
/ the room
/ my room
/ either room
แต่จะไม่ใช้
X the either room
X either my room
นอกจากนี้หลังคำ either จะตามด้วย singular และ singular verb
ตัวอย่าง
/ Either day is O.K.
X Either day are O.K.
/ Either kind of school is quite suitable.
X Either kinds of school are quite suitable.
3. กรณีที่ทำหน้าที่ pronoun
คำว่า either อาจจะใช้เป็น pronoun เลย หรือใช้ร่วมกับโครงสร้าง

either of + plural noun phrase ก็ได้
ตัวอย่าง
Do you want, whisky or brandy ?
Oh, I don’t mind. Either.
คุณจะดื่มวิสกี้หรือบรั่นดี
อะไรก็ได้ครับ
Has either of your parents visited you?
พ่อแม่ของคุณมาเยี่ยมคุณบ้างไหม
ข้อสังเกต เมื่อ either of ตามด้วย noun phrase จะต้องมี determiner ซึ่ง อาจจะเป็น possessive, demonstrative หรือ article ประกอบอยู่ด้วยเสมอ ดังนั้น เราอาจจะใช้ได้ว่า
/ either of the rooms.
/ either of my rooms.
แต่จะไม่ใช้
X either of rooms
นอกจากนี้เรายังใช้ either of + personal pronoun ได้ด้วยสำหรับคำว่า personal pronoun ก็คือสรรพนามแทนบุคคล เช่น you, them, us
ตัวอย่าง
/ Either of you could do it.
X Either you could do it.
ข้อควรจำอีกประการหนึ่งก็คือ ประโยคที่ขึ้นต้นด้วย either of ตามด้วย plural noun phrase กริยาจะใช้รูปเอกพจน์
ตัวอย่าง
/ Either of the children is quite capable of looking after the baby.
เด็กคนใดก็ได้ที่สามารถดูแลทารกได้
X Either of the children are quite capable of looking after the baby.
แต่บางครั้งเราอาจจะพบว่าในประโยคปฏิเสธ (negative sentence) เราอาจจะใช้ plural verb ได้ แต่เป็นในลักษณะที่เป็น informal style
ตัวอย่าง
I don’t think either of them are at home.
(Informal)
I don’t think either of them is at home.
(Formal)
ผมไม่คิดว่าจะมีใครอยู่บ้าน
หมายเหตุ อย่าลืมว่า เราจะใช้ plural verb ได้ก็ต่อเมื่อ either of + personal pronoun/plural noun phrase อยู่ในรูปประโยคปฏิเสธ
ต่อไปนี้จะกล่าวถึงหลักการใช้ neither
neither ออกเสียงได้ 2 อย่างคือ ไน-เทอะ หรือ นี-เทอะ คำนี้ทำหน้าที่ได้หลายอย่างคือ determiner, pronoun, conjunction, adverb
1. กรณีที่ทำทน้าที่ determiner
เมื่อ neither ทำหน้าที่ determiner จะใช้ neither + singular noun + singular verb ในกรณีดังกล่าวนี้จะไม่มี article, possessive หรือ demonstrative หลังคำว่า neither
ตัวอย่าง
Neither parent realized what was happening.
ไม่มีฟอแม่คนไหนเลยที่ตระหนักถึงสิ่งที่กำลังเกิดขึ้น
Neither car is exactly what I want.
ไม่มีรถคันไหนเลยที่ตรงกับความต้องการของผม
Neither plan really suits me.
ไม่มีแผนการอัน ไหนเลยที่เหมาะสมกับผม
2. กรณีที่ทำหน้าที่ pronoun
neither อาจจะใช้ทำหน้าที่ pronoun ได้ โดยใช้โครงสร้างเป็น neither of + plural noun phrase ใน plural noun phrase จะมี determiner จำพวก article, possessive หรือ demonstrative กับ noun รูปพหูพจน์ กริยาในประโยคอาจจะเป็นรูปเอกพจน์ถ้าหากเป็น formal style หรืออาจจะเป็นรูปพหูพจน์ เมื่อเป็น informal style
ตัวอย่าง
Neither of his parents realized what was happening.
ไม่มีพ่อแม่คนไหนเลยที่ตระหนักถึงสิ่งที่กำลังเกิดขึ้น
Neither of these cars is exactly what I want.
ไม่มีรถคันไหนเลยที่ตรงกับคาามต้องการของผม
Neither of my sisters are very tidy.
(Informal)
ไม่มีน้องสาวของผมคน ไหนเลยที่เรียบร้อย
นอกจาก neither of จะใช้ร่วมกับ plural noun phrase แล้ว ยังใช้ได้กับ personal pronoun เช่น neither of them, neither of us, neither of you ได้ด้วย
ตัวอย่าง
Neither of them can understand.
ไม่มีใครสักคนที่เข้าใจ
Neither of us wants to come.
ไม่มีใครในพวกเราสักคนที่อยากจะมา
นอกจากการใช้ดังกล่าวแล้ว ยังอาจจะใช้ neither ตามลำพัง ในฐานะที่เป็น pronoun
ตัวอย่าง
Which one do you want? – Neither is any good.
คุณต้องการอันไหน – ไม่มีสักอันที่ดีเลย
The unions do not want a strike, and neither do the management.
ทางสหภาพไม่ต้องการสไตร้ค์ และฝ่ายบริหารก็ไม่ต้องการเช่นกัน
จากตัวอย่าง เรื่องการใช้ neither จะพบว่ามีโครงสร้างที่จดจำง่ายๆ คือ
ประโยคปฏิเสธ neither + helping verb รูปบอกเล่า + subject
3. กรณีที่ทำหน้าที่ conjunction
ในกรณีนี้ neither จะใช้กับ nor เพื่อเชื่อม negative ideas หรือ ความคิดในเชิงปฏิเสธเข้าด้วยกัน
ตัวอย่าง
Neither James nor Virginia was at home.
ทั้งเจมส์และเวอร์จิเนียไม่อยู่ที่บ้าน
เพื่อแยกแยะให้เห็นความหมายและที่มาของประโยคดังกล่าวให้ชัดเจนขึ้น นั่นคือ ประโยคตัวอย่างดังกล่าวมาจาก
(A) James wasn’t at home.
(B) Virginia wasn’t at home.
เมื่อนำเอา (A) และ (B) มารวมกันโดยใช้ neither … nor จะได้เป็น Neither James nor Virginia was at home.

มาจาก 2 ประโยค คือ
(A) I don’t smoke.
(B) I don’t drink.
เมื่อรวม (A) กับ (B) เข้าด้วยกัน โดยใช้ neither … nor จะได้เป็น
I neither smoke nor drink.
ผมไม่สูบบุหรี่และไม่ดื่มสุรา
ในกรณีที่ neither … nor ใช้เชื่อม subjects กริยาภายในประโยคจะใช้ตามประธาน (subject) ตัวที่อยู่ใกล้มันมากที่สุด
ตัวอย่าง
Neither Ray nor George has finished his work.
ทั้งเรย์และจอร์จยังทำงานไม่เสร็จ
แต่ถ้าเป็นแบบ informal style เมื่อประธาน 2 ตัว ถูกเชื่อมด้วย neither … nor อาจจะใช้ plural verb ก็ได้
ตัวอย่าง
Neither James nor Virginia were at home.
ทั้งเจมส์และเวอร์จิเนียไม่อยู่บ้าน

1. การใช้ both, either, และ neither เมื่อพูดถึงสิ่งของสิ่งเดียวกัน และสามารถใช้คำทั้งสามนี้ร่วมกับคำนาม (Nouns) ได้ดังตัวอย่าง

                Both restaurants are very good.

                We can go to either restaurant. I don’t care. (either หมายความว่า one or the other หรือ it doesn’t matter which one)

                Neither restaurant is expensive. (neither หมายความว่า  not the one or not the other)

                I didn’t like either restaurant. (= not the one or the other)

2. สามารถใช้ both/ either/  neither กับ of และเมื่อใช้คำทั้งสามนี้กับ of จำเป็นต้องมี the/ these/ those/ my/ your/ his, etc. ตามหลัง of  เสมอไป อย่างเช่น จะใช้ว่า both of restaurants ไม่ได้ แต่ต้องใช้ว่า both of the restaurants หรือ both of these restaurants เป็นต้น ดังตัวอย่าง

                Both of your cars are very nice.

                Neither of the restaurants we went to was (or were) expensive.

                We can go to either of those restaurants. I don’t mind.

หมายเหตุ: สำหรับ both  อาจใช้ of  ตามหลังหรือไม่ต้องใช้ก็ได้ เช่น : both my parents หรือ both of my parents.

3. สามารถใช้ us/ you/ them ต่อท้าย both of/ neither of/ either of ได้เช่นเดียวกัน  ดังตัวอย่าง

                Can either of you speak Spanish?

                I wanted Tom and Ann to come, but neither of them wanted to.

                ต้องใช้ both of ข้างหน้าของ us/ you/ them เสมอไป  ดังตัวอย่าง

                Both of us were very tired.

4. ข้างหลังของ neither of สามารถใช้ได้ทั้ง Singular Verb (กริยาเอกพจน์) หรือ Plural Verb (กริยาพหูพจน์) เช่น  :

                Neither of the children wants (or want) to go to bed.

                Neither of us is (or are) married.

5. สามารถใช้รูปแบบ both and , neither nor, และ either or  ได้ดังตัวอย่าง

                Both Tom and Ann were late.

                They were both tired and hungry.

                Neither Tom nor Ann came to the party.

                He said he would contact me, but he neither wrote nor called.

                I’m not sure where he is from.  He is either Spanish or Italian.

                Either you apologize, or I’ll never speak to you again.

6. สามารถใช้ both/ neither/ either โดยลำพังก็ได้เช่นเดียวกัน  ดังตัวอย่าง

                Is he British or American? Neither.  He is Australian.

                Do you want tea or coffee?  Either.  It doesn’t matter.

                I couldn’t decide which one to choose.  I liked both.
