นามนับได้ – นามนับไม่ได้ – คุณรู้ไหมว่า คำนามใดคือคำนามนับได้และคำนามใดคือคำนามที่นับไม่ได้ ส่วนไวยากรณ์นี้ถือว่าเป็นสิ่งที่สำคัญมากในภาษาอังกฤษที่ไม่ควรมองผ่านนะคะ เนื่องจากคำนามทั้ง 2 กลุ่มนี้มีหลักการใช้คำนำหน้าและคำกิริยาที่แตกต่างกันวันนี้เราจะมาดูกันว่าคำนามเหล่านี้มีวิธีการใช้งานอย่างไร ใช้ในกรณีไหน พร้อมตัวอย่างให้เห็นภาพง่าย

เพื่อความเข้าใจอย่างง่ายดาย บทความเกี่ยกับ คำนามนับได้ (Countable Noun) และคำนามนับไม่ได้ (Uncountable Noun) นี้ของเราจะได้แบ่งเป็น สี่ส่วนเนื้อหาหลักๆ ที่ผู้เรียนสามารถติดตามง่ายๆ ดังนี้

ก่อนอื่นเราจะทำความรู้จักกับคำนามนับได้พร้อมตัวอย่างให้เห็นภาพได้ชัดกันนะคะ

1 – คำนามนับได้ (Countable Noun) คืออะไร

ในบทความนี้เราจะทำความรู้จักกับคำนามนับได้ (Countable Noun) กันนะคะ ไม่ยากเลยค่ะ สำหรับคำนามที่เราสามารถระบุได้ว่ามี กี่ชิ้น กี่อัน กี่ตัว กี่แห่ง ฯลฯ เข้าใจง่ายๆ คือคำนามที่เราสามารถนับและระบุจำนวนได้อย่างชัดเจน คำนามเหล่านั้นจะเรียกว่า Countable Noun แปลเป็นไทยโดยตรงคือคำนามนับได้

• Singular: (เอกพจน์) คือนามที่มีอันเดียวชิ้นเดียว
• Plural: (พหูพจน์) คือนามที่มีมากกว่าหนึ่งขึ้นไป

หากอยู่ในรูปเอกพจน์ คำนามนับได้เหล่านี้จะใช้ “a” หรือ “an” นำหน้า หากต้องการทราบจำนวนของคำนามนับได้เหล่านี้ จะถามโดยใช้ “How many?” ตามด้วยคำนามนับได้พหูพจน์ เช่น

ตัวอย่างเช่น

• She has three dogs. แปลว่า เธอมีสุนัขสามตัว
• I own a house. แปลว่า ฉันเป็นเจ้าของบ้าน
• I would like two books please. แปลว่า ฉันต้องการหนังสือสองเล่มโปรด
• How many friends do you have? แปลว่า คุณมีเพื่อนกี่คน?

คำนามนับได้ (Countable Noun) มีสองประเภคคือ (single) และ  (plural) คำนามนับได้แบบ single พูดถึงจำนวนน้อยคือ 1 ที่มักจะอยู่ด้านหลังของคำว่า  “a/an” หรือ one. ยกตัวอย่างเช่น a pen, one table,…

ส่วนคำนามนับได้แบบ plural พูดถึงจำนวนตั้งแต่ 2 ขึ้น ยกตัวอย่างเช่น pens, tables,…

ถ้าอยากเปลี่ยนจากคำนามนับได้ single เป็นคำนามนับได้แบบ plural ง่ายมากๆ แค่เพิ่มตัว ‘s’ในตัวอักษรสุดท้าย ยกตัวอย่างเช่น: pen → pens, table → tables,…

แต่ก็มีบ้างคำศัพท์อยู่ในกรณีพิเศษเช่น

• คำนามที่มีตัวอักษรสุดท้าย (ลงท้ายด้วย) เป็น CH, SH, S, X, O ต้องเพิ่ม “es” เข้าตัวอักษรสุดท้าย
  เช่น: a class → classes, a bus → Buses, Brush →Brushes, Math → Matches, Box→ Boxes, Fox → Foxes

• คำนามที่มีตัวอักษรสุดท้ายเป็น Y เมื่ออยากเปลี่ยนเป็นคำนาม plural เราจะเปลี่ยนตัวอักษร “y” เป็น “i” และเพิ่ม “es”
  เช่นคำว่า: a candy → candies,  City→ Cities, Duty→Duties, Day → Days, Boy → Boys, Key → Keys

• คำนามที่มีตัวอักษรสุดท้ายเป็น F, FE, FF เราลบทิ้งไปและเอาตัว “ves” แทนตัวอักษรสุดท้าย.
  ยกตัวอย่างเช่น: A knife → knives

• เติม “es” ท้ายคำนามที่ลงท้ายด้วย “o” และหน้า “o” เป็นพยัญชนะ
  เช่น: radio → radios, Bamboo → Bamboos, Photo→ Photos, Piano→ Pianos

หมายเหตุ:

มีคำนามบ้างคำที่อยู่ในกรณีพิเศษ หมายถึงว่ามันจะไม่ตามเกณ์ที่พูดดังกล่าว ลองดูตามตารางดังต่อไปนี้กันนะคะ

2 – คำนามนับไม่ได้ (Uncountable Noun) คืออะไร

สำหรับ Uncountable Noun หรือคำนามนับไม่ได้นี้มีหลากหลายคนพูดถีงเพราะได้เอามาใช้งานจริงในชีวิตประจำวันบ่อยมาก คุณสามารถบันทึกการอธิบายที่ทำให้คุณเข้าใจง่ายที่สุดดังนี้

คำนามนับไม่ได้ (Uncountable Noun)  เป็นคำนามที่คุณเจอบ่อยเช่นนม น้ำ ไวน์ หรือ ข้าว น้ำตาล หรือของที่มีปริมาณมากๆ เช่น ผม  ฟางหญ้า เป็นต้น  จะให้เราพูดว่า ขอข้าว 2 เม็ดจ้า หรือ ขอนม 3 หยด เป็นคำนามที่เราไม่สามารถระบุจำนวน หรือบอกว่ามีกี่ชิ้นกี่อันได้ ทั้งหมดเรียกชื่อว่า Uncountable Noun  หรือคำนามนับไม่ได้นั้นเอง

หรืออีกมุมมองหนึ่งเกี่ยวกับคำนามนับไม่ได้ (Uncountable Noun) คือคำนามนับไม่ได้ เช่นแนวคิด หรือปริมาณ หรือเป็นวัตถุที่มีขนาดเล็กมากจนไม่สามารถนับได้ หรือไม่มีรูปร่างแน่นอนจึงทำให้ไม่สามารถนับได้ (เช่น ของเหลว ผง ก๊าซ เป็นต้น)  คำนามนับไม่ได้จะใช้คู่กับคำกิริยาที่อยู่ในรูปเอกพจน์ เนื่องจากโดยทั่วไปแล้วคำนามนับไม่ได้เหล่านี้จะไม่มีรูปพหูพจน์

ยกตัวอย่างให้ได้เห็นภาพชัดๆ ดังนี้สำหรับ คำนามนับไม่ได้ (Uncountable Noun)  tea, sugar ,water, air,rice ,knowledge, beauty, anger, fear, love, money, research, safety, evidence…

ถ้าจะแบ่งตามประเภทของคำนามเราลองมาดูกันว่ามีคำนามใดบ้างที่ไม่สามารถนับได้ในภาษาอังกฤษตามตารางดังนี้

เพราะมีเป้าหมายในการใช้งานที่แตกต่างกันเลยคำนามที่นับไม่ได้ไม่ใช้กับ “a”, “an” แทนเป็น ถามโดยใช้ “How much?” จะช่วยคุณทราบปริมาณของคำนามที่นับไม่ได้

 หากต้องการระบุปริมาณของคำนามนับไม่ได้ จำเป็นต้องอธิบายเพิ่มด้วยการใช้คำเหล่านี้ เช่น some, a lot of, much, a bit of, a great deal of เป็นต้น หรือใช้คำที่บอกปริมาณอย่างเจาะจง เช่น a cup of, a bag of, 1kg of, 1L of, a handful of, a pinch of, an hour of, a day of.

ตัวอย่างเช่น

• There has been a lot of research into the causes of this disease. แปลว่า มีงานวิจัยมากมายถึงสาเหตุของโรคนี้
• He gave me a great deal of advice before my interview. แปลว่า เขาให้คำแนะนำมากมายก่อนการสัมภาษณ์
• Can you give me some information about uncountable nouns? แปลว่า คุณช่วยให้ข้อมูลเกี่ยวกับคำนามนับไม่ได้หน่อยได้ไหม
• Measure 1 cup of water, 300g of flour, and 1 teaspoon of salt. แปลว่า ตวงน้ำ 1 ถ้วยแป้ง 300 กรัมและเกลือ 1 ช้อนชา
• How much rice do you want? แปลว่า คุณต้องการข้าวเท่าไหร่

• คำนามนับไม่ได้ (Uncountable Noun) กับวิธีการใช้งาน

อย่างไรก็ตามยังมีอีกสอง-สามวิธีสำหรับคำนามนับไม่ได้ที่จะรวมกับวลีภาษาอังกฤษอื่น ๆ เพื่อให้กลายเป็นคำนามที่นับได้เช่น

1. บางเรื่องที่ไม่สามารถนับได้ แต่เก็บไว้ในกล่องหรือบรรจุหีบห่อ … จะกลายเป็นคำนามที่นับได้

– This is one of the foods that my younger brother likes very much แปลว่า นี่เป็นหนึ่งในอาหารที่น้องชายของฉันชอบมาก

3. เป็นคำนามที่มีหลายความหมาย ถ้าแปลตามความหมายว่า “เวลา” “time” เป็นคำนามนับไม่ได้ แต่ถ้าแปลว่า “จำนวนครั้ง” “time” จะปิดเป็นคำนามที่นับได้
– ตัวอย่างเช่น

• Yesterday, I didn’t have enough time to finish my homework  แปลว่า เมื่อวานนี้ฉันมีเวลาพอที่จะทำการบ้านให้เสร็
• I go jogging three times a week  แปลว่า  ฉันไปจ็อกกิ้งสามครั้งต่อสัปดาห์

3 – วิธีการใช้คำนามนับได้ (Countable Noun) และคำนามนับไม่ได้ (Uncountable Noun)

คำใช้เฉพาะกับคำนามที่นับได้

ในไวยากรณ์ภาษาอังกฤษเราใช้ “a / an” ก่อนคำนามเอกพจน์เพื่อแสดงถึงจำนวนหนึ่งเท่านั้น ส่วน “few/a few” ใช้ก่อนหน้าคำนามพหูพจน์เพื่อแสดงถึงปริมาณเล็กๆ น้อยๆ และ “many” สำหรับพหูพจน์ที่มีมากกว่าสอง ตามตารางดังนี้

aa student, a pencil, a bike,…manymany books, many pens,…fewfew bananas, few answer questions,…a fewa few topics, a few chairs,…

คำใช้เฉพาะกับคำนามที่นับไม่ได้

เช่นเดียวกับคำนามที่นับได้คำนามที่นับไม่ได้ยังมีคำ และวลีเช่น “มาก” (many), “litlle / a little” (นิดหน่อย), a little bit of (a little).

muchmuch money, much oil,…littlelittle milk,…a littlea little money,…a little bit ofa little bit of ink,…

คำใช้ได้กับทั้งคำนามนับได้ (Countable Noun) และคำนามนับไม่ได้ (Uncountable Noun)

นอกจากคำศัพท์ที่ใช้เฉพราะกับคำนามนับได้ หรือคำนามนับไม่ได้ก็ยังมีกลุ่มคำศัพท์ที่ใช้ได้ทั้งสองเช่น  ‘the, some, any, no, a lot of, lots of, plenty of, enough.

ตัวอย่างเช่น

– Countable Noun: the cats, some desks, any rooms, a lot of pets…
– Uncountable Noun: some sugar, no money, plenty of milk…

หมายเหตุสิ่งที่ทำให้หลายคนสับสน

คำนามนับได้บางคำ (ในภาษาอื่น) กลับกลายเป็นคำนามนับไม่ได้ในภาษาอังกฤษ หากพบเช่นนี้ จำเป็นต้องใช้กฏการใช้คำนามนับไม่ได้กับคำนามนับได้เหล่านั้น คำนามในกลุ่มนี้ที่พบได้บ่อย คือ accommodation, advice, baggage, behavior, bread, furniture, information, luggage, news, progress, traffic, travel, trouble, weather, work

ตัวอย่างเช่น

• I would like to give you some advice. แปลว่า ฉันขอคำแนะนำของคุณหน่อยค่ะ
• How much bread should I bring? แปลว่า ฉันควรนำขนมปังเท่าไหร่
• I didn’t make much progress today. แปลว่า ฉันไม่ได้ก้าวหน้ามากนักในวันนี้
• This looks like a lot of trouble to me. แปลว่า ดูเหมือนจะเป็นปัญหามากสำหรับฉัน
• We did an hour of work yesterday. แปลว่า เราทำงานเมื่อวานนี้หนึ่งชั่วโมง

ปรดระวังการใช้ hair ซึ่งเป็นคำนามนับไม่ได้ในภาษาอังกฤษ โดยทั่วไปแล้วคำนี้จะอยู่ในรูปเอกพจน์ แต่หากกล่าวถึงเส้นผมบางเส้นอย่างเจาะจง สามารถใช้ในรูปพหูพจน์ได้

Anything that can be counted, whether singular – a dog, a house, a friend, etc. or plural – a few books, lots of oranges, etc. is a countable noun. The following countable noun examples will help you to see the difference between countable and uncountable nouns. Notice that singular verbs are used with singular countable nouns, while plural verbs are used with plural countable nouns.

1. There are at least twenty Italian restaurants in Little Italy.
2. Megan took a lot of photographs when she went to the Grand Canyon.
3. Your book is on the kitchen table.
4. How many candles are on that birthday cake?
5. You have several paintings to study in art appreciation class.
6. There’s a big brown dog running around the neighborhood.

Uncountable Noun Examples

Anything that cannot be counted is an uncountable noun. Even though uncountable nouns are not individual objects, they are always singular and one must always use singular verbs in conjunction with uncountable nouns. The following uncountable noun examples will help you to gain even more understanding of how countable and uncountable nouns differ from one another. Notice that singular verbs are always used with uncountable nouns.

1. There is no more water in the pond.
