ZERO & FIRST CONDITIONALS

1. FIRST CONDITIONAL

If Paul gets the job, he will move to London .

We use the first conditional to express something that will probably happen in the future.

. Modal verbs (Can / May / Must + infinitive)

2. ZERO CONDITIONAL

If you heat ice, it turns into water.

If you don’t water plants regularly, they die.

We use the zero conditional for general truths or natural laws .

         1 If I see him, I 

 (give) him a lift.

         2 The table will break if you 

 (sit) on it.

         3 If he 

 (eat) all that, he will be ill.

         4 If I find your passport, I 

 (telephone) you.

         5 The police 

 (arrest) him, if they catch him.

         6 If he 

 (read) in bad light, he will ruin his eyes.

         7 Someone 

 (steal) your car if you leave it unlocked.

         8 What will happen if my parachute 

 (not open)? 

         9 If he 

 (wash) my car, I’ll give him $10.

         10 If she 

 (need) a radio, she can borrow mine.

         11  If you 

 (not go) away, I’ll call the police.

         12 I’ll be very angry if he 

 (make) any more mistakes.

         13 If he 

 (be) late, we’ll go without him.

         14 She will be absolutely furious if she 

 (hear) about this.

         15 If you put on the kettle, I

การใช้ประโยคเงื่อนไข (IF)

ประโยคเงื่อนไข มี 4 ลักษณะ ได้แก่

Type 0: เป็นความจริงเสมอ

ใช้กับสิ่งที่เป็นจริงเสมอ เช่น ความเป็นจริงทางวิทยาศาสตร์ ทางธรรมชาติ เป็นต้น นอกจากนี้ ก็ใช้คู่กับประโยคคำสั่ง อีกด้วย

รูปแบบประโยค

If + Simple Present, + Simple Present

ตัวอย่าง

ความจริงโดยทั่วไป
  Ice melts if you heat it.
  น้ำแข็งละลาย ถ้าคุณทำให้น้ำแข็งร้อน

  Plants die if they don’t get enough water.
  ต้นไม้ตาย ถ้าต้นไม้ไม่ได้รับน้ำอย่างเพียงพอ

  If you mix red and blue, you get purple.
  ถ้าคุณผสมสีแดงกับสีน้ำเงิน คุณได้สีม่วง

  If my husband has a cold, I usually catch it.
  ถ้าสามีฉันเป็นหวัด ฉันติดหวัดเสมอ

  If public transport is efficient, people stop using their cars.

Type 1: มีความเป็นไปได้ที่จะเกิดขึ้นในปัจจุบัน

ใช้พูดเกี่ยวกับเรื่องที่มีความเป็นไปได้ที่จะเกิดขึ้นในขณะพูด ถ้าเกิดสิ่งนี้ ก็จะทำสิ่งนั้น เป็นต้น

If + Simple Present + Simple Present

ตัวอย่าง

  If you don’t hurry, you will miss the train.
  ถ้าคุณไม่รีบ คุณจะพลาดรถไฟ (เช่น ตอนนี้ใกล้เวลารถไฟออกแล้ว แต่ยังแต่งตัวไม่เสร็จ)

  You will get wet if it rains today.
  คุณจะเปียก ถ้าวันนี้ฝนตก (ฝนอาจจะทำท่าว่าจะตก และไม่เห็นว่าเตรียมเอาร่มไป)

  If I have enough time, I’ll watch the football match.
  ถ้าฉันมีเวลา ฉันจะดูฟุตบอล (ฉันอาจจะพอมีเวลาว่าง แต่ยังไม่แน่)

Type 2: เป็นไปไม่ได้ในปัจจุบัน หรือ unreal present

ใช้กับเรื่องที่เป็นไปไม่ได้แน่นอน เป็นเรื่องที่สมมุติว่า ตอนนี้ถ้าสิ่งนั้นเกิดขึ้น จะเป็นอย่างไร

รูปแบบ

If + Past Simple, + (would/could/might + กริยาช่องที่ 1)

ตัวอย่าง

  If I were a millionaire, I would buy a castle.
  ถ้าฉันเป็นมหาเศรษฐี ฉันจะซื้อปราสาทสักหลังนึง

  If she were a bird, she would sing all day long.
  ถ้าผู้หญิงคนนั้นเป็นนก เธอคงจะร้องเพลงทั้งวัน
  (ข้อสังเกต จะใช้ were แทน ไม่ใช้ was เช่น If I were…, If she were…, If he were… เป็นต้น)

  If she knew the answer, she would win the prize.
  ถ้าผู้หญิงคนนั้นรู้คำตอบ, เธอคงชนะไปแล้ว (แต่ดูลักษณะแล้ว ไม่มีทางที่เธอจะรู้คำตอบแน่นอน)

  If he called me, I couldn’t hear.
  ถ้าเขาเรียกฉัน, ฉันก็ไม่ได้ยิน

Type 3: ผ่านมาแล้ว เป็นไปไม่ได้

ใช้เกี่ยวกับเรื่องที่ผ่านมาแล้ว ไม่สามารถแก้ไขได้แล้ว เป็นการพูดถึงอดีตที่ไม่มีทางเป็นไปได้แล้ว

รูปแบบประโยค

if + Past Perfect, + would + have + กริยาช่อง 3

ตัวอย่าง

  If he had been careful, he wouldn’t have had that terrible accident.
   ถ้าเขาได้ระวัง เขาก็จะไม่ประสบอุบัติเหตุร้ายแรงนั้น (แต่จริง ๆ คือ เขาประสบอุบัติเหตุ)

  If he has spoken to me nicely, I wouldn’t have left him.
  ถ้าเขาพูดกับฉันดี ๆ ฉันก็จะไม่จากเขาไป (แต่ตอนนี้ ฉันจากเขามาแล้ว)

  If you had studied harder, you would have passed the exam.
  ถ้าเธอดูหนังสือมากกว่านี้ เธอก็จะสอบได้แล้ว (แต่ความจริงคือ เขาสอบตก)
