Making a Dog Bowl Stand with Hand Tools

This is a \”traveling\” wooden dog food stand that I made for my pup, Ned.
I had made one before for him a few months back with simple dado housing joints for the feet. I didn’t really finish that one and had done some terrible carving on the top so I decided it was time to make him a new one.
I wanted this one to flat pack down so we could take it camping with us. Being this was a ‘simple’ project, I had plenty of room to incorporate a couple new joints and some more carving. I really should have kept it simple as this is how projects get out of hand and end up not done two years later.
It doesn’t really ‘flat’ flat pack since the wooden spring takes up space but the \”wooden spring joint\” holds the legs in place, open or closed very well.
I also created my first bread board edges. with the help of a Stanley 45 and chisels a wooden shoulder plane and a dovetail saw. After the legs were cut from the main board, became a more durable wear point for the spring to rub against.
This was made from 4.5 Inch wide board which I cut into two 26 inch long pieces. The two boards were edge glued and bread board edges attached. The main platform for me is 18 inches long with the two uprights being 4 inches on each side.
I didn’t saw the feet off until I had completed the Celtic knot design carving on the top. Which was done with a V chisel and a number of different gouges. I also made a quick tool with a hacksaw and some files to texture the bottom of the carving.
I finished this one with 3 coats of shellac. I would have used a poly but I seemed to have left the lid off of that can. I’m more than ok having used a natural finish close to Neds food and water.
