Grammar 5 นาที EP 3 : การเติม 'ing' ที่คำกริยา (V-ing)

Learn English Grammar: When to use an ‘-ING’ word after ‘TO’

Do we always use a verb after ‘to’? The answer is NO! In this English grammar lesson, I will teach you how ‘to’ can be followed by a noun, a preposition, an adjective, an adjective participle, and more. We will look at this grammatical structure in several sentences that serve different purposes. For example, we can express anticipation by saying “I look forward to meeting with you next week.” We can express a preference by saying “I prefer jogging to running.” Or we can express an obligation by saying “I need to get around to finishing my essay.” Watch the video for these and lots more useful ways to use ‘to’ plus an ‘ing’ word ending. Then take a quiz on this lesson at https://www.engvid.com/englishgrammaringafterto/

Hi. Welcome to www.engvid.com. I’m Adam. Today’s lesson is a bit of a grammar lesson; a specific point I’m going to look at. And this is \”to\” followed by an \”ing\” word or an \”ing\” verb, it looks like. Right? And for some people this is very confusing because they automatically see \”to\”, and they think it should be followed by a verb. Okay?
Now, the one thing that a lot of people forget is that \”to\” can be a preposition, and that is what you’re going to be looking at when you’re looking at \”to\” with an \”ing\”. But there are also some things you have to remember. You have to keep in mind that there are certain collocations. A \”collocation\” is basically a set of wordsa pair, or three, or four wordsthat just generally go together to have a particular meaning. Right?
So, for example: \”look forward to\” these three words generally go together, and they’re going to be followed by an \”ing\”. \”I look forward to meeting you.\” Now, where people get confused is they see a verb, and then they see the \”to\”, and they’re automatically thinking of another verb. But, here, this \”to\” is not part of the infinitive. There’s two uses for \”to\”: Preposition, and the infinitive \”to\”. Right? Part of the infinitive verb. What you have to remember is that preposition.
\”Admit to\”… \”Admit\”… \”The student admitted to cheating on the test.\” So: \”Admitted to\”, what? Remember: The preposition needs an object, and that’s what you’re going to be answering when you answer the question: \”What?\” And objects in this particular case are going to be nouns or they’re going to be gerunds. They can also be active participle adjectives, but I’ll talk about that in a second. \”Admit to cheating\”, \”Object to being filmed\”, for example. So, somebody… I’m a politician and I see a camera coming, and I say: \”No, sorry. I object to being filmed. You can ask me questions, but don’t film me\”, basically.
\”Get around to\” means you will do something. Okay? So: \”I’ll get around to handing in the proposal later today.\” Okay? So, basically what you have to do is just remember these collocations.
Where it gets a little bit trickier is when you have adjectives. But before that, \”prefer\” I forgot to mention. \”I prefer jogging to swimming.\” \”Do you like jogging?\” \”Well, I prefer it to swimming.\” Right? So it doesn’t have to be an \”ing\”; it can be \”it\” mentioned before, and then \”to\”, \”ing\”. But this is a comparative \”to\”, preposition. And, again: \”to\”, what? \”To\” the noun or gerund. So, this is a gerund. It’s not a verb, and that’s why you can… It can follow \”to\”. Okay? Now, let’s look at a little… Something a little bit trickier, and I’ll show you a general rule on how you can recognize whether to use \”to\” as a preposition or a verb.
Now we’re going to look at something a little bit different. Okay? We’re going to look at adjective participles. Now, \”participles\” are basically verbs that are used as adjectives. They can be, like, \”ed\” or irregular verb, and they can be \”ing\” verbs; passive and active that’s, you know, a different lesson on participles. But you have to also pay attention to how they’re being used in the sentence.
Let’s look at an example: \”The company is committed to providing topquality customer care.\” So, here, we have a verb: \”commit\”, and we have: \”is committed to\”. But, here, we’re not actually looking at it as a passive verb; we’re looking at it as more like an adjective. \”The company is committed\”, right? So, this is telling you about the company. It’s like a subject complement; it’s acting like an adjective. And, here, this is a complement.
So, basically what does this mean? You have to look and see: What is your independent clause first? Right? And you should know independent clauses by now; and if you don’t, I have a video on that as well. So, here: \”The company is committed\”. This is a complete sentence: \”The company is committed.\” To what? I don’t know yet. […]

English Grammar: How to use \”to\” before an \”-ing\” verb

In this lesson, I explain how and when we use \”to\” before a verb with the \”ing\” ending. The use of \”to\” before an \”ing\” verb is not always correct. But it is correct in a particular case to express an emotion or action happening in the present referring to a past or future event. If this sounds complicated, have no fear! It is a simple structure once you understand how it works. And if you do our quiz at http://www.engvid.com/englishgrammarhowtousetobeforeaningverb/ you will get used to using this concept in no time!

Hi there. My name is Emma, and in today’s video, we are going to talk about something many students wonder about, and that is when we use \”to\” and \”ing\” together. Sorry. Okay, so for example… Yeah: \”What???\” Many students, when they see this, it \”poof\” their minds; they have no idea: What is this? It goes against all the rules they’ve learned. So I’m going to explain to you when this happens, and how we can use it. So, let’s look at some examples.
This is the most common example of this you will see: \”I look forward to meeting you.\” Notice we have our verb: \”look forward\”, and then we have this little guy, here, \”to\”, and then we also have \”ing\”. Okay? So, in this case, it’s very strange. We’re going to learn about why this is in a moment, but before we do that, I want to tell you some of the basic rules so you can understand, first off: What am I talking about with \”ing\”, and what am I talking about with \”to\”?
So let’s look at the basic rules. This is all about when you have two verbs in a sentence. For example: \”thank\” is the first verb, and \”help\” is the second verb. Okay? What you will notice in English, the first rule is: Any time you have a preposition between the first verb and the second, you’re going to use \”ing\”. A preposition is a word like \”for\”, \”to\”, \”about\”, \”toward\”, \”up\”, \”down\”, \”in\”, \”out\”, all of these words that kind of tell us where something is located, these are called \”prepositions\”. So, whenever you see a preposition after a verb, this next verb is going to end in \”ing\”. So our example here: \”I thank you for helping me.\”
Similarly, we have our verb: \”interested\”, \”I’m interested\”, so this is the verb. And we have a second verb: \”learn\”. So, if we have a preposition after the first verb: \”I’m interested in\”, you’re going to see that the second verb is going to end in \”ing\”. \”I’m interested in learning English.\” So we don’t say: \”I’m interested in to learn English.\” Similarly, we don’t say: \”I thank you to help me.\” If you have a preposition like \”for\”, \”in\”, \”out\”, you are going to have the second verb with \”ing\”.
Okay, some verbs… These are verbs without prepositions. If we have two verbs and there’s no preposition between them, they will be either verb with a second verb ending in \”ing\”, or a verb plus the second verb beginning in \”to\”. So let’s look at some examples so you understand what I’m talking about.
Okay, I have here the verb \”enjoy\”. Here’s my first verb. Think of a second verb we can use. Let’s say \”eat\”. With the verb \”enjoy\”, the verb that follows is always going to end in \”ing\”. \”I enjoy eating.\”, \”I enjoy reading.\”, \”I enjoy listening to music.\”, \”I enjoy shopping.\” Okay? So, in this case, all… The second verb will always end in \”ing\”. We have another example, here: \”I started\”. \”I started\”, let’s think of a verb, any verb. \”Fish\”. \”I started fishing.\” So, again, this is the first verb, here’s the second verb, second verb ends in \”ing\”. I en… Or: \”I started drinking.\”, \”I started eating my dinner.\” Okay?
Then we also have some verbs that you will see… Here’s the first verb: \”decided\”. The second verb does not end in \”ing\”. \”I decided to\”, what’s a verb we can use here? \”Watch\”. \”I decided to watch TV.\” Okay? \”I want to eat ice cream.\” So, in this case, we have two verbsso verb one, verb two; verb one, verb twothe second verb begins with the word \”to\”.
Now, other teachers on engVid have already covered this information. What you will notice is that some verbs are always like this, some verbs are always like this, and some verbs do both. It’s pretty much you have to memorize: When is it \”ing\”…? Sorry. \”ing\”, and when is it \”to\”? What we’re really interested in today is this, this really confusing thing: Why is it \”ing\” and \”to\”? All right? So let’s look at some more examples of this, and I will tell you the rule on when we use \”ing\” and \”to\” together.
Okay, so I’ve explained to you the three rules we use when we have two verbs together. Okay? Sometimes you have a verb followed by \”ing\”, sometimes you have a verb followed by \”to\”, and in the case of prepositions, you have a verb followed by \”ing\”. So I’ve taught you these three rules. Now we’re going to look at when we have both \”ing\” and \”to\” together. Okay? So, \”ing\” and \”to\” together.
So in this case, we have two verbs. The first verb is: \”I look forward to\”. The second verb is: \”meeting\”. Okay?
