A brief introduction to the TOK concept of certainty

What is certainty?

If You Dream It, You Can Do It. | Bob Proctor

You see, we are created in a magnificent vibration, in an absolutely magnificent vibration. Born risk takers. Free. That conditioning takes place after birth. You can change it. It takes guts. It takes goals. And you know something? You’re sitting there watching this, and you’re thinking, \”My God, I’m going to change something. I would say, keep reminding yourself that you have tremendous reservoirs of potential within you, and therefore you are quite capable of doing anything you set your mind to. You really can.
I don’t care what the cynic tell you. Quit listening to some of your peers. All you must do is figure out how you can do it, not whether you can or not. When are you going to do it? When are you going to do? You’ve got to create a sense of urgency. \”I’m going to do it right now.\”
If you can see it, you can do it. The beautiful truth is you can do anything. We’ve got to know there is a place. There is a specific frequency, and if you get on that frequency, you’re going to attract what you need to you. This is what it’s all about. Why have you been in doubt with such awesome powers? If you’ll make a committed decision, \”This I’m going to do,\” and you don’t have to know how, you do not have to know how, the second you make the committed decision, you flip your brain onto the frequency that you have to be on to attract what you have to attract to manifest the thing that you want. If you can see it, you can do it. It’s got to be something you want. Wants come from inside. Act like you’re already there. Walk, talk, speak, live like you’re already there. Don’t set a small goal. Don’t set something that doesn’t really wind your stem. Set it so big it jazzes you, really get you going.
When something of a very high nature resonates with the very high side of you, you’ll know it. You’ll know it. You will feel it. Feeling is conscious awareness of vibration. The only prerequisite, do you want it? Not, do you need it? Not, could you do it? The only prerequisite is, do you want it? Take the lid off to our marvelous mind and dream. For goodness sake, give yourself the right to do that. Get your analytical mind out of the way. Put it in your pocket for a while. All you’re doing is exploring, daydreaming. What did Lawrence say? \”All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their mind waken the day to find that it was vanity. But the dreamers of the day are dangerous men for they may act their dream with open eyes to make it possible.\” This I did.

In this seventyfourth video in the new series on G.W.F. Hegel’s great early work, the Phenomenology of Spirit, we continue our study of the second portion of the section \”SelfConsciousness\”, i.e. \”Lordship and Bondage\”, or the \”MasterSlave Dialectic\”. I read and comment on paragraphs 185187 of the text here.
The duplication or reciprocal attitude and action of selfconsciousness does not at first result in a twosided recognition of one selfconsciousness by the other, and vice versa. Instead, both confront each other, as another, living individual. And each seeks in the other the certainty, or rather the truth of its own selfcertainty, it has now lost and wants to regain.
In confronting the other selfconsciousness, each selfconsciousness shows that its being is not reducible to its mere life, that it is willing to risk its own life and to threaten the life of the other and realizes that the other is doing precisely the same as well. This brings the selfconsciousnesses into a struggle to the death, in which each is not only seeking the death of the other, but the meaning of his or her own existence.
In this video series, I will be working through the entire Phenomenology, paragraph by paragraph for each one, first reading the paragraph, and then commenting on what Hegel is doing, referencing, discussing, etc. in that paragraph.
This series is designed to provide an innovative digital resource that will assist students, lifelong learners, professionals, and even other philosophers in studying this classic work by Hegel for generations to come. Certainty is perfect knowledge that has total security from error, or the mental state of being without doubt.
Objectively defined, certainty is total continuity and validity of all foundational inquiry, to the highest degree of precision. Something is certain only if no skepticism can occur. Philosophy (at least, historical Cartesian philosophy) seeks this state.
It is widely held that certainty about the real world is a failed historical enterprise (that is, beyond deductive truths, tautology, etc.). This is in large part due to the power of David Hume’s problem of induction. Physicist Carlo Rovelli adds that certainty, in real life, is useless or often damaging (the idea is that \”total security from error\” is impossible in practice, and a complete \”lack of doubt\” is undesirable).
Pyrrho is credited as being the first Skeptic philosopher. The main principle of Pyrrho’s thought is expressed by the word acatalepsia, which denotes the ability to withhold assent from doctrines regarding the truth of things in their own nature; against every statement its contradiction may be advanced with equal justification. Secondly, it is necessary in view of this fact to preserve an attitude of intellectual suspense, or, as Timon expressed it, no assertion can be known to be better than another.
AlGhazali was a professor of philosophy in the 11th century. His book titled The Incoherence of the Philosophers marks a major turn in Islamic epistemology, as Ghazali effectively discovered philosophical skepticism that would not be commonly seen in the West until Averroes, René Descartes, George Berkeley and David Hume. He described the necessity of proving the validity of reason—independently from reason. He attempted this and failed. The doubt that he introduced to his foundation of knowledge could not be reconciled using philosophy. Taking this very seriously, he resigned from his post at the university, and suffered serious psychosomatic illness. It was not until he became a religious sufi that he found a solution to his philosophical problems, which are based on Islamic religion; this encounter with skepticism led Ghazali to embrace a form of theological occasionalism, or the belief that all causal events and interactions are not the product of material conjunctions but rather the immediate and present will of God.
Averroes was a defender of Aristotelian philosophy against Ash’ari theologians led by AlGhazali. Averroes’ philosophy was considered controversial in Muslim circles. Averroes had a greater impact on Western European circles and he has been described as the \”founding father of secular thought in Western Europe\”.
Descartes’ Meditations on First Philosophy is a book in which Descartes first discards all belief in things which are not absolutely certain, and then tries to establish what can be known for sure. Although the phrase \”Cogito, ergo sum\” is often attributed to Descartes’ Meditations on First Philosophy, it is actually put forward in his Discourse on Method. Due to the implications of inferring the conclusion within the predicate, however, he changed the argument to \”I think, I exist\”; this then became his first certainty.
On Certainty is a series of notes made by Ludwig Wittgenstein just prior to his death. The main theme of the work is that context plays a role in epistemology. Wittgenstein asserts an antifoundationalist message throughout the work: that every claim can be doubted but certainty is possible in a framework. \”The function serve in language is to serve as a kind of framework within which empirical propositions can make sense\”.
Physicist Lawrence M. Krauss suggests that identifying degrees of certainty is underappreciated in various domains, including policy making and the understanding of science. This is because different goals require different degrees of certainty—and politicians are not always aware of (or do not make it clear) how much certainty we are working with.
Rudolf Carnap viewed certainty as a matter of degree (\”degrees of certainty\”) which could be objectively measured, with degree one being certainty. Bayesian analysis derives degrees of certainty which are interpreted as a measure of subjective psychological belief.
