The infinitives give me headache. I often get lost in the sentential analysis … okay, so infinitives are non-finite verb forms BUT they are NOT verbs, albeit they can express some verb properties.
My question for you, sir, is do you have an easy way out when it comes to discerning when an infinitive complement is 1)adverb 2) adjective 3) noun.
Why am I asking this?
Well, we know that an object of sentence has to be a noun (or a noun phrase, doesn't matter, right) – so, if an infintive is acting like a noun, then it can function as an Object.
But, if an infinitive is acting like an adverb, then it is really modifying the (main) verb, and the object of that sentence is something else /or if the verb is intransitive, then it doesn't have an object, right.
And, lastly, if an infinitive is acting like an adjective- I noticed that infinitives which act as adjectives are usually postpositional (i.e they come AFTER the noun they modify) – then, that infinitve cannot be Object of a sentence as well.
I need your opinion on this, I would really appreciate it quite a lot.
In other words, let's take the first example – "I want you to go" – this infintive here "to go" is it acting like an adjective (postpositionally modifying "you") or an adverb (modifying "want")?
