ทำความรู้จักกับ There is/There are
พื้นฐานที่ควรมีมาก่อน: Singular/Plural Noun, Countable/Uncountable Noun
There is/There are ถ้าแปลเป็นไทยให้เข้าใจง่ายๆ นั้นจะแปลว่า “มี” ใช้บอกว่ามีสิ่งนั้นอยู่ตรงนั้น มีสิ่งนี้อยู่ตรงนี้ แต่เอ๊ะ!…เราจะเลือกใช้ There is หรือ There are อย่างไรดีล่ะ? น้องๆ ลองดูประโยคตัวอย่างกันเลย
There is a teacher in a classroom.
There are students in a cafeteria.
ถ้าน้องๆ สังเกตจะเห็นว่า There is จะตามด้วยคน 1 คน สิ่ง 1 สิ่ง หรืออะไรที่มีอย่างเดียวเท่านั้น (ในตัวอย่างคือ ครู 1 คน) ซึ่งเราจะเรียกสิ่งนั้นว่าเป็น Singular Noun หรือ คำนามเอกพจน์
ในทางกลับกัน There are จะตามด้วยคนหลายๆคน ของหลายๆอย่าง (ในตัวอย่างคือ เด็กนักเรียนหลายคน) ซึ่งเราเรียกสิ่งนั้นว่าเป็น Plural Noun หรือ คำนามพหูพจน์นั่นเอง
และน้องๆ ทราบหรือไม่ว่า There is นั้นใช้กับคำนามที่นับไม่ได้ (Uncountable Noun) ด้วยนะ (แน่ล่ะ! เพราะว่ามันนับไม่ได้ มันจึงมีค่าเป็น 1 อยู่ตลอดเวลาไง) เช่น
There is rice in my plate.
There is milk in a school fridge.
*ถ้าน้องๆ คนไหนยังไม่มั่นใจเรื่อง Countable/Uncountable Noun อย่าลืมกลับไปทบทวนกันด้วยนะ 🙂

ย่อ There is ให้พูดง่ายๆ สบายปาก
ในการพูด There is ในชีวิตจริงนั้น น้องๆ สามารถย่อประโยคให้สั้นลงได้ด้วยนะ ซึ่งการย่อแบบนี้เรียกว่า Contractions (ไม่จำเป็นต้องจำชื่อเรียกมันหรอกนะ)
สำหรับคำย่อของ There is คือ There’s ออกเสียงเหมือนคำว่า There เลย แค่ใส่เสียง s ต่อท้ายแค่นั้นเอง เช่น
There is a burger at a food stall.
ย่อได้เป็น
There’s a burger at a food stall.
สำหรับ There are นั้นเราไม่สามารถย่อได้นะ
*การใช้รูป There’s ที่ย่อแบบนี้นิยมใช้ในภาษาพูด (Spoken Language) เท่านั้นนะ ถ้าน้องๆ เอาไปเขียนเรียงความส่งคุณครูให้เขียน There is แบบเต็มๆ ตลอดนะครับ 🙂

แล้วถ้า “ไม่มี” ล่ะ?: Negative Form
เรารู้กันไปแล้วใช่ไหมครับว่า There is/There are แปลว่า “มี” แล้วถ้าน้องๆ อยากบอกว่า “ไม่มี” ล่ะ สามารถพูดอย่างไรได้บ้าง? ง่ายมากครับ แค่เติม not ไปข้างหลัง is/are เท่านั้นเอง เช่น
There is not a TV in the class.
There is not a dog in school.
There are not students in the library.
There are not parents in the building.
ซึ่งในภาษาพูดเราสามารถย่อประโยคปฎิเสธของ There is/There are ได้ดังนี้ครับ
There isn’t a TV in the class. (There is not = There isn’t)
There aren’t parents in the building. (There are not = There aren’t)
Tips: เราสามารถใช้ any ตามหลัง there are not ได้ เพื่อแสดงให้เห็นว่า “ไม่มีสิ่งนั้นเลย” เช่น There are not any students in school on Sunday. (ไม่มีนักเรียนที่โรงเรียนในวันอาทิตย์เลย) หรือใช้กับ Uncountable Noun เช่น There is not any grass in the football field. (ไม่มีหญ้าในสนามฟุตบอลเลย)
There’s a TV.
There isn’t a TV.
มีถั่วไหม?: Question Form
ถ้าเราต้องการถามใครสักคนว่า มี…ไหม? เราสามารถใช้โครงสร้าง There is/There are ถามได้ โดยย้าย Is/Are มาไว้ด้านหน้าประโยค เช่น
Is there a toilet in the building?
Is there a computer in the library?
และถ้าเป็นคำนามพหูพจน์และคำนามที่นับไม่ได้ ให้ใช้ any ด้วยเสมอ เช่น
Are there any teachers on the second floor?
Is there any juice for students?
Are there any children in the playground?
Is there any sugar left?
มีกี่อันกันนะ?: How many … are there?
หากน้องๆ ต้องการถามจำนวนของสิ่งนั้นๆว่ามีกี่อัน กี่ชิ้น กี่คน น้องๆ สามารถใช้โครงสร้าง

How many students are there in this room?
ในห้องนี้มีนักเรียนกี่คน?
How many tables are there in the cafeteria?
ในโรงอาหารมีโต๊ะกี่ตัว?
How many food stalls are there around the school?
มีรถเข็นขายอาหารกี่ร้านรอบๆโรงเรียน?
A: How many people are there?
B: There are five people.
เห็นไหมครับว่าการใช้ There is/There are นั้นง่ายมากๆ ใช้บอกได้ว่าตรงนั้นมีอะไร ตรงนู้นมีอะไร หรือถามว่ามีอะไรอยู่ตรงนั้นไหม? มีจำนวนเท่าไหร่? ประโยชน์ในการใช้หลากหลายมากๆ ครับ ว่างๆ ลองเดินสำรวจรอบๆ โรงเรียนและฝึกพูดกับคุณครูหรือเพื่อนๆ กันได้นะครับ 🙂
