1. Eager beaver

สำนวนนี้ จะหมายถึง คนที่กระตือรือร้น มีความขยันขันแข็ง สังเกตว่าสำนวนนี้มี 2 คำด้วยกัน คือ eager ที่แปลว่ากระตือรือร้น กับ beaver ซึ่งเป็นสัตว์ฟันแทะชนิดหนึ่ง ว่ากันว่ามันขยันมาก ชอบแทะตามต้นไม่อยู่บ่อยๆ ดังนั้นสำนวนนี้ จึงนำมาใช้เรียกคนที่มีความกระตือรือร้นในการทำงาน เหมือนเจ้าตัวบีเวอร์ที่ชอบกัดแทะต้นไม้อยู่เชียวหละ ตัวอย่างเช่น

      I was an eager beaver when I started work on my first job.

ฉันเคยเป็นคนที่ขยันมากเลยนะ หมายถึงตอนทำงานแรกๆอ่ะ (ตอนนี้หรอ บายยส์)

2. cash cow

เอ๊ะๆๆ คำนี้คืออะไร ทำไมมีเงินๆ วัวๆ มาเกี่ยวอะไรด้วย ไม่ใช่น้า อย่าเพิ่งเข้าใจผิดเชียว cash cow นี้เป็นสำนวนแปลว่า ธุรกิจหรือสินค้าที่เป็นตัวทำกำไรให้บริษัทได้ดี ตัวอย่างเช่น

The new product became the company’s cash cow.

ผลิตภัณฑ์ตัวใหม่ได้กลายเป็นเป็นสินค้าทำกำไรของบริษัท

3. golden handshake

แหม ศัพท์คำนี้ดูดีเชียว เหมือนว่าจับมือกันแล้วกลายเป็นทองหรืออย่างไร เฮ้ยย ไม่ใช่นะๆ  golden handshake คำนี้หมายถึง เงินก้อนที่ได้จากบริษัทหรือหน่วยงานที่เปิดโอกาสให้พนักงานลาออกจากตำแหน่ง แล้วทางบริษัทจะจ่ายค่าชดเชยเป็นเงินให้ มาดูตัวอย่างประโยค เช่น

4. hold the fort

สำนวนนี้ ถ้าแปลตรงตัว หมายถึง การรักษาป้อมปราการ แต่พอเรานำมาใช้เป็นสำนวน จะแปลว่า การดูแลรับผิดชอบงานหรือกิจกรรมบางอย่างให้เรียบร้อยในขณะที่คนอื่นๆไม่อยู่ ตัวอย่างเช่น

When the manager is out of the office, he asks me to hold the fort.

ตอนที่ผู้จัดการไม่อยู่ออฟฟิศ เขาขอให้ฉันมาคุมงานแทนน่ะ

5. grease someone’s palm

สำนวนนี้หมายถึง การที่เราให้เงินใครบางคนเพื่อให้เขาทำบางอย่างให้เรา หรือเรียกกันง่ายๆ ก็คือติดสินบนนั่นแหละ เหมือนกับเอาน้ำมันไปหยอดฝ่ามือ เพื่อให้ทำอะไรได้ง่ายขึ้นคล่องขึ้นนั่นเอง ตัวอย่างประโยค เช่น

ก็ถ้าอยากจะเลื่อนขั้น มันก็ต้องมีใต้โต๊ะกันบ้างอ่ะนะ (แต่เรื่องนี้ไม่ดีเลยเนอะ แบบนี้ไม่ควรทำ)

6. sell ice to Eskimos

สำนวนนี้ หมายถึง การที่เราสามารถใช้ในการชักชวน  เสนอขายสินค้าและบริการให้กับคนที่อาจไม่ต้องการมันเลย ก็เหมือนกับการที่ขายน้ำแข็งให้กับชาวเอสกิโม ทั้งที่จริงๆเราก็รู้กันว่าชาวเอสกิโมไม่ได้ต้องการน้ำแข็งหรอก เพราะฉะนั้น หากมีคนบอกว่า

You’re such a smooth talker, you could sell ice to Eskimos.

โหย เธอน่ะพูดเก่งจัง พูดได้ลื่นไหลมาก อย่างกับจะขายน้ำแข็งให้ชาวเอสกิโมเชียวเลยล่ะ (สำนวนนี้มักพบใช้ในกลุ่มอาชีพพนักงานขาย หรือพวก salesman นั่นเอง)

         นี่ก็เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของสำนวนที่อาจพบได้ในแวดวงธุรกิจ ยังไงก็ลองนำไปใช้กันได้ หรือถ้าคราวหลังได้ยินใครพูดมา ก็จะได้เข้าใจมากขึ้นว่าเขาหมายถึงอะไร
