เมื่อเดินทางไปถึงห้องสัมภาษณ์เราก็ไปลงชื่อและรอที่หน้าห้อง ระหว่างนี้ก็มีผู้บริหารและทีมงานของ Fulbright ในไทยเข้ามาพูดคุยกับเรา พี่ๆก็บอกพวกเราถึงระบบการสัมภาษณ์ต่างๆว่ามีเวลาคนละ 15-20 นาที เขาก็เล่าให้ฟังว่าปีที่ผมสมัครมีคนสมัครมากกว่าปกติ (150 คน) โดยปกติคนสมัครจะมีประมาณ 100 นิดๆและมีการคัดคนที่สมัครด้านบริหารธุรกิจออกเยอะเหมือนกัน เข้าใจว่าคงสมัครกันสาขานี้มาก อ้อจะอธิบายนิดนึงนะครับว่าพนักงาน ที่ทำงานใน องค์กร Fulbright ประเทศไทย (เรียกเต็มๆว่า Thailand – United States Educational Foundation) ไม่มีสิทธิได้เป็นคณะกรรมการคัดเลือกผู้รับทุนนะครับ คณะกรรมการจะเป็นตัวแทนจากสถานฑูตอเมริกา รัฐบาลอเมริกา กระทรวงต่างประเทศของไทย ศิทย์เก่าและผู้ที่เคยดำรงตำแหน่งในบอร์ดของ Fulbright และกรรมการจะมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงทุกปีเพื่อความโปร่งใสครับ

ระหว่างรอสัมภาษณ์ก็ได้พูดคุยกับผู้ที่อยู่คิวก่อนหน้าและถัดไปจากเรา ก็อยากจะบอกว่าอายุค่อนข้างน้อยกันหมด จะมีประสบการณ์ทำงานประมาณ 1-3 ปีกัน (เรามี 4 ปีตอนนั้น อายุแก่ที่สุด!) เท่าที่สังเกตุเขาจะจัดคิวผู้ที่เรียนสาขาเหมือนกันติดๆกัน อย่างเวลาช่วงของผมมีคนสมัครสาขา communication 2 คน และ design/architech 2 คน

และแล้วเวลาสัมภาษณ์ก็มาถึงพี่จากองค์กร Fulbright ก็เรียกชื่อบอกว่าถึงเวลาแล้ว ผมเปิดประตูเข้าไปในห้อง บรรยากาศก็เป็นทางการมากๆ มีโต๊ะประชุมใหญ่อยู่ตรงกลางและคณะกรรมการราวๆ 7-8 ท่านที่นั่งเรียงกันอยู่ฝั่งตรงข้าม กรรมการทุกคนแต่งตัวเต็มยศด้วยเสื้อสูทเน็คไท้ สัดส่วนกรรมการฝรั่งกับคนไทยอยู่ที่ 50/50 นอกจากนี้ก็ยังมีทีมงาน Fulbright และผู้ติดตามอีก 3-4 ที่นั่งอยู่ข้างหลังกรรมการเหล่านี้ด้วย ผมก็เดินไปที่เก้าอี้ฝั่งของผม ยิ้มและก็ยกมือไหว้สวัสดีคณะกรรมการทุกท่านตามมารยาทไทยก่อนที่จะนั่งลงและแนะนำตัวเองนิดหน่อยว่าผมชื่ออะไรและก็ขอบคุณทุกคนที่ให้โอกาสผมมาสัมภาษณ์ ในวันนี้ อ้อการสัมภาษณ์ตรงนี้นี้เป็นภาษาอังกฤษทั้งหมดนะครับ

คำถาม และคำตอบที่เกิดขึ้นข้างล่างนี้ผมเอามาจากเอกสารที่ผมได้พิมพ์เก็บไว้หลัง จากที่สัมภาษณ์เสร็จแล้ว คณะกรรมการจะเรียงถามทีละคน คนละหนึ่งคำถามจากด้านซ้ายไปด้านขวา ผมได้ลืมคำถามไป 1 คนและบางคำตอบก็น่าจะยาวกว่านี้ และแน่นอนก็มีพูดผิดหลักไวยากรณ์ด้วยแต่เพื่อความง่ายในการอ่านก็ได้แก้คำ พูดให้ถูกต้องขึ้นนะครับ อ้อผมระบุในใบสมัครว่าจะไปเรียนสาขา new media/communication ครับ

1. You cited how new media has been utilized to propel Barrack Obama to win the US presidential election in 2008, how can this be applied to political campaigns in Thailand, considering Thailand doesn’t have wide internet access as in the US?

Ans: Democrat party actually used mobile texts to communicate to their constituents after Abhisit became a prime minister in early 2009. พอตอบตรงนี้ปุ๊ปก็มีกรรมการฝรั่งผู้ชายหน้าดุๆคนนึงแย้งมาทันทีว่า “much to the annoyance of many Thai people”. ผมเข้าใจว่ากรรมการคนนี้คงกำลังเล่นบทผู้สัมภาษณ์คนร้ายที่ จ้องจับผิดแน่ๆ เลยตั้งสติและตอบไปว่า It was because politicians have been utilizing new media as a way tool to influence voters and use only top-down approach instead of bottom-up. People in the non-governmental agencies need to educate grassroots organizations to use mobile phones and internet to communicate their needs and problems bottom up to influence the policy and law makers to create change that is relevant to our lives.

2. How can you use new technology to stop vote buying practices in Thailand?

Ans: I can train community-based organizations in each province to become watchdog and they can use mobile phones to report election frauds and vote-buying incidents to news media like The Nation, Channel 3 and Channel 7. Politicians better be aware that anything they do is being watched and I hope this will create more honesty and transparency in how politicians carry out their campaigns.

3. How do you aim to reach poor people, especially the elderly, who don’t have access to IT and internet?

Ans: I think the issue is not about poor people not having access to IT and internet in Thailand. I have traveled to one of the most rural areas in Chiangrai and there’re still computers with access to internet in local schools. We need to train children and young people to learn how to use computer to promote civic education and political participation and then they can educate their parents and older people in the community who may not know how to use IT to try and get involved in the new technology.

4. You mentioned that Thailand already has a good IT and communication infrastructure. If that’s the case, what are the gaps that you can fill in to further advance the development of the Thai society?

Ans: The biggest challenge is not the lack of infrastructure but the capacity of Thai educators. We do not have enough teachers who have the ability to teach students how to apply IT knowledge in real life. They teach students to learn how to use Microsoft Office but not how Microsoft office can be used to run businesses, create social campaigns to educate community members how to prevent HIV/AIDS, human trafficking or stop environmental pollution in their community.

5. A lot of young people in Thailand are spending their time playing violent online games, hanging out in the streets and causing many social problems. How can you stop this behavior and direct them to more productive social activities?

Ans: I have an experience managing a HIV/AIDS computer game project. From my research, I found that young people consume entertainment media and play video games because of they just want to have fun. It is not effective for us to persuade them to just stop that behavior. So, instead, we should integrate social messages, such as how to prevent HIV contraction, into those entertainment channels so they can learn and have fun at the same time. And hopefully, the messages will sink in and they will be motivated to get involved in the social cause.

6. How do you aim to use new media to contribute and strengthen the Fulbright Family if you are awarded with this scholarship?

Ans: I believe that new media is one of the greatest inventions in this century. We have already used internet and social media widely to create and maintain important networks. For example, I didn’t personally know any Fulbright alumni and thanks to facebook, I managed to search a few alumni who were kind enough to give me great advice on how to prepare for this interview! I plan to utilize social media to help Fulbright Thailand in reaching out all the alumni to keep updates of all the Fulbright activities and encourage them to participate and make an even wider impact outside of the Fulbright community.

7. Do you really need this? You have a good career, GPA and TOEFL scores. It seems you can move on to do great things without this scholarship anyhow. Why do you need to win a Fulbright scholarship?

Ans: Despite working in the field of communication for social development for the past few years, I still struggle to come up with the right strategies to use new media not to just create awareness and inform, but to recruit people to take actions. For example, I’m currently working on a campaign to reach millions of people to know about the issue of human trafficking but I’m still struggling to provide them with an internet platform to self-organize, raise funds, volunteer for local charities, and educate their friends to be aware of this crime. I hope that I will be given an opportunity to go to the school in the US, as US has the leading research and programs in new media and communication. I would like to learn how the US organizations are using new media to mobilize and engage citizens to participate socially, culturally and politically in their community. Then, I can use their principles to apply in Thailand.

หลังจากที่ตอบคำถามสุดท้ายผมก็ เริ่มรู้สึกว่าการสัมภาษณ์นี้ชักจะยาวไปนิด พูดไปเยอะมาก จนกลัวว่ากรรมการจะคิดว่าเราประหม่าและว่ายน้ำวนไปมา แต่ผมก็มองตาผู้สัมภาษณ์ผมรอบๆโต๊ะตลอดเวลานะครับ อันนี้สำคัญอย่างมาก อย่ามัวแต่มองคนที่ถามคำถามเรา เวลาตอบให้เวลามองคนอื่นด้วยเพราะคนให้คะแนนเราก็คือกรรมการทุกคน แต่ผมว่าการสัมภาษณ์น่าจะผ่านไปด้วยดีเพราะมีกรรมการผู้หญิงฝรั่งหนึ่งคนกับ ผู้ชายคนไทยอีก 2 คนยิ้มให้เวลาเราตอบคำถามตลอดเวลา

เขาก็ถามผมเป็นคำถามสุดท้ายว่ามีอะไรที่อยากกล่าวอีกใหม ผมก็เลยกล่าวปิดท้าย (เรียกคะแนน) ว่าขอบคุณกรรมการทุกท่านที่สละเวลาอันมีค่าเพื่อให้โอกาสผมมา สัมภาษณ์ในวันนี้ ผมเข้าใจว่ามีคนเก่งๆหลายๆคนที่เข้ามาถึงรอบนี้ได้และไม่ว่าผลจะออกมาเป็น เช่นไรผมก็ภูมิใจมากแล้วที่ได้เกียรติมาถึงจุดนี้ หลังจากนั้นผมก็ลุกขึ้นยกมือไหว้ขอบคุณทุกๆคนและก้าวเดินออกมาจากห้อง
