Numeral ตัวเลขต่างๆ แบ่งออกเป็น 2 ประเภท คือ
1. Cardinal Number ( จำนวนจับ )
2. Ordinal Number ( เลขลำดับ )

1. Cardinal Number ( จำนวนจับ ) 
ใช้เมื่อต้องการบอกจำนวน ขนาด ปริมาณ 
ในภาษาอังกฤษ เราอ่านยังไง เรามาดูกันเลย 
ค่อนข้างงงมากถึงมากที่สุด แอร๊ยยยยย เอาจริงๆแล้วในชีวิตรจริง

นอกจากการอ่านตัวเลขข้างต้น เรายังสามารถอ่านตัวเลขแบบแปลกๆ อย่างอื่นได้อีก เช่น

2,300 twenty-three hundred (หรือ two thousand three hundred)
250,000 a quarter of a million (a quarter คือ หนึ่งในสี่ ดังนั้น 1 ใน 4 ของ 1,000,000 จึงหมายถึงเลข 250,000)
500,000 half a million
750,000 three-quarters of a million

ใช้บอกลำดับที่ ต้องมี The นำหน้าเสมอ

เฉพาะลำดับที่ 11,12,13 เท่านั้นที่ใช้ th หลังจากนั้นจะใช้ st nd rd ทุกครั้ง

ในภาษาอังกฤษ การบอกลำดับคน ลำดับสิ่งของ หรือวันที่ เราจะใช้ one, two, three, … เหมือนการนับเลขธรรมดาไม่ได้ แต่เราจะต้องใช้ตัวเลขลำดับที่ ซึ่งก็คือ first, second, third, …

ระบบตัวเลขในภาษาอังกฤษ

การใช้ตัวเลขในภาษาอังกฤษจะแบ่งเป็น 2 แบบ

1. ตัวเลขทั่วไป (cardinal number) เช่น one, two, three, … ใช้สำหรับกรณีทั่วๆไปที่ไม่มีลำดับ อย่างเช่น การบอกปริมาณ (จำนวนเงิน ราคา อุณหภูมิ จำนวนคน จำนวนสิ่งของ ฯลฯ) การบอกเวลา เป็นต้น

2. ตัวเลขลำดับที่ (ordinal number) เช่น first, second, third, … ใช้กับสิ่งที่มีลำดับ อย่างเช่น วันที่ ชั้นของอาคาร ลำดับการเข้าเส้นชัย ลำดับคน ลำดับสิ่งของ เป็นต้น

เราจะเห็นได้ว่า ตัวเลขลำดับที่จะอ่านเหมือนตัวเลขธรรมดา เว้นแต่ตัวเลขหลักสุดท้ายเท่านั้นที่ต้องเปลี่ยนรูปหรือเติม th

ตัวอย่างการใช้ตัวเลขลำดับที่กับจำนวนที่มากกว่า 100 เช่น
320th – Three hundred (and) twentieth
531st – Five hundred (and) thirty-first
1,000th – One Thousandth
1,000,000th – One millionth

สำหรับตัวย่อ เราจะใช้ st กับตัวเลขที่ลงท้ายด้วยหนึ่ง nd กับตัวเลขที่ลงท้ายด้วยสอง และ rd กับตัวเลขที่ลงท้ายด้วยสาม ยกเว้นเลข 11, 12, 13 ที่จะใช้ th

นอกเหนือจากตัวเลขที่ลงท้ายด้วยหนึ่ง สอง และสามแล้ว ตัวเลขอื่นจะลงท้ายด้วย th หมด

ตัวอย่างการใช้ตัวเลขลำดับที่

1. วันที่

January 24, 2020 อ่านว่า January twenty-fourth, two thousand and twenty (การเขียนตัวเลขวันที่จะไม่นิยมเขียนตัวย่อลำดับ อย่างเช่น 24th แต่จะอ่านเหมือนเขียน)

2. ลำดับคน

I am the first from the left in this photo.
ฉันคือคนแรกจากซ้ายในภาพนี้

3. ลำดับสิ่งของ

Do you see the second building from that big tree?
คุณเห็นตึกที่สองนับจากต้นไม้ต้นใหญ่นั้นมั้ย

4. ชั้นของอาคาร

Meet me on the third floor at noon, okay?
เจอฉันที่ชั้น 3 ตอนเที่ยงนะ โอเคมั้ย

5. เศษส่วน

เราจะใช้ตัวเลขลำดับที่กับส่วน และถ้าเลขเศษมากกว่าหนึ่ง เราต้องเติม s หลังส่วนด้วย
1/5 – One fifth
3/7 – Three sevenths

ยกเว้นเลข 2 เราจะใช้คำว่า half
1/2 – One half

และเลข 4 เราสามารถใช้ได้ทั้ง quarter และ fourth
1/4 – One quarter หรือ One fourth
