Infinitive คืออะไร

Infinitive คือ verb ช่อง 1 (เช่น go, come, eat) ที่ใช้หลัง to หรือ verb อื่นๆ

ยกตัวอย่างให้เห็นภาพเช่น

I want to stay home.
ฉันอยากอยู่บ้าน
(คำว่า stay เป็น infinitive)

I can swim.
ฉันว่ายน้ำเป็น
(คำว่า swim เป็น infinitive)

หรืออธิบายอีกแบบหนึ่งก็คือ ในภาษาอังกฤษจะมีเงื่อนไขว่า verb ที่ตามหลัง to, ตามหลัง modal verb (เช่น can, could, may, might) หรือตามหลัง verb ทั่วไปบางตัว จะต้องเป็น verb ช่อง 1 ซึ่งเราจะเรียก verb ช่อง 1 นี้ว่า infinitive นั่นเอง

รูปแบบของ infinitive

หลักๆแล้ว เราจะแบ่ง infinitive ได้เป็น 2 แบบ คือ

1. Infinitive with to (หรือ to-infinitive)

คือ infinitive ที่ตามหลัง to อย่างเช่น

We come to celebrate.
พวกเรามาเพื่อฉลอง

Anne called to ask me about math yesterday.
แอนโทรมาถามฉันเรื่องคณิตศาสตร์เมื่อวานนี้

2. Infinitive without to (หรือ zero infinitive)

คือ infinitive ที่ไม่ได้ตามหลัง to อย่างเช่น

Joe can dance very well.
โจสามารถเต้นได้เก่งมาก

My cat always makes me smile.
แมวของฉันมักจะทำให้ฉันยิ้มเสมอ

หลักการใช้ infinitive with to

Infinitive with to (หรือ to-infinitive) ซึ่งก็คือ infinitive ที่ตามหลัง to จะมีหลักการใช้ดังนี้

1. ใช้ infinitive with to ได้กับ verb บางตัวเท่านั้น

เราจะใช้ infinitive with to ได้หรือไม่ verb ข้างหน้าจะเป็นตัวกำหนด ซึ่งเราสามารถใช้ infinitive with to ได้กับ verb บางตัวเท่านั้น ยกตัวอย่างเช่น

I want to be a teacher.
ฉันอยากเป็นครู
(คำว่า want ใช้กับ infinitive with to ได้)

I enjoy swimming.
ฉันสนุกกับการว่ายน้ำ
(คำว่า enjoy ใช้กับ infinitive with to ไม่ได้ เราจะไม่ใช้ I enjoy to swim. แต่จะต้องใช้ verb รูป -ing หรือที่เรียกว่า gerund แทน)

ทั้งนี้ verb เหล่านี้บางคำก็สามารถใช้ infinitive แบบมี to หรือไม่มีก็ได้ อย่างเช่นคำว่า help เราจะใช้ได้ทั้ง I helped to fix the radio. และ I helped fix the radio.

และ verb บางคำก็ใช้ได้กับทั้ง infinitive with to และ verb รูป -ing (gerund) เช่นคำว่า continue เราสามารถใช้ได้ทั้ง I continued to walk. และ I continued walking.

แต่ก็มี verb บางคำที่ถึงแม้จะใช้ได้กับทั้ง infinitive with to และ verb รูป -ing (gerund) แต่ความหมายที่ได้นั้นจะต่างกัน เช่นคำว่า stop

  • ถ้าเป็น I stopped smoking the cigarettes. จะแปลว่า ฉันหยุดสูบบุหรี่
  • แต่ถ้าเป็น I stopped to smoke the cigarettes. จะแปลว่า ฉันหยุดเพื่อที่จะสูบบุหรี่ (หยุดทำในสิ่งที่กำลังทำอยู่ เพื่อที่จะสูบบุหรี่)

2. ใช้ infinitive with to ตามหลัง noun หรือ pronoun

ในบางประโยค เราสามารถแทรก noun หรือ pronoun (คำสรรพนาม) เป็นกรรมไว้ระหว่าง verb และ infinitive with to ได้ ยกตัวอย่างเช่น

We need a place to stay.
พวกเราต้องการที่อาศัย

I don’t have anything to eat.
ฉันไม่มีอะไรกินเลย

3. ใช้ infinitive with to ตามหลัง adjective

เราสามารถใช้ infinitive with to ตามหลัง adjective ได้ด้วย โดยจะใช้โครงสร้าง “verb to be + adjective + infinitive with to” อย่างเช่น

It is good to talk to you.
มันก็ดีนะที่ได้คุยกับคุณ

I am happy to be with you
ฉันมีความสุขนะที่ได้อยู่กับคุณ

4. ใช้ infinitive with to กับ adverb

เรามักจะใช้ infinitive with to กับ adverb บางคำ อย่างเช่น too ซึ่ง too + adjective จะแปลว่า “…เกินไป” เช่น too heavy หนักเกินไป, too good ดีเกินไป

These books are too heavy to carry.
หนังสือเหล่านี้มันหนักเกินไปที่จะแบกได้

It is too expensive to live in London.
มันแพงเกินไปที่จะอยู่ในลอนดอน

หรือใช้กับ adverb คำว่า enough ซึ่งแปลว่า “มากพอ, เพียงพอ”

We have enough food to eat.
พวกเรามีอาหารเพียงพอที่จะกิน

My kid is old enough to find a job.
ลูกฉันอายุมากพอที่จะหางานได้แล้ว

5. ใช้ infinitive with to ตามหลัง question word

เราสามารถใช้ question word อย่างเช่น what, who, where, when, how กับ infinitive with to ได้ อย่างเช่น

I don’t know what to do.
ฉันไม่รู้ว่าต้องทำอะไร

Can you teach me how to cook?
คุณสอนวิธีทำอาหารให้ฉันหน่อยได้มั้ย

6. ใช้ infinitive with to ขึ้นต้นประโยค

เรายังสามารถใช้ infinitive with to ขึ้นต้นประโยคได้อีกด้วย โดยมักจะใช้ในการเล่นคำ หรือในภาษาทางการ อย่างเช่น

To love is to give.
การรักก็คือการให้

To be successful, you need ambition.
การจะประสบความสำเร็จได้ คุณต้องมีความทะเยอทะยาน

หลักการใช้ infinitive without to

Infinitive without to (หรือ zero infinitive) ซึ่งก็คือ infinitive ที่ไม่ได้ตามหลัง to จะมีหลักการใช้ดังนี้

1. ใช้ infinitive without to หลัง modal verb

Modal verb ก็อย่างเช่นคำว่า can, could, may, might, will, would, shall, should ซึ่งคำเหล่านี้จะต้องตามด้วย verb รูปปกติ ซึ่งก็คือ infinitive without to นั่นเอง อย่างเช่น

I will call you later.
ฉันจะโทรหาคุณในภายหลัง

You should finish your homework today.
คุณควรทำการบ้านให้เสร็จในวันนี้

2. ใช้ infinitive without to หลัง verb of perception

Verb of perception หรือคำกริยาที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการรับรู้ ก็อย่างเช่นคำว่า see, hear, feel, smell, taste ซึ่งคำเหล่านี้จะต้องใช้กับ infinitive without to อย่างเช่น

I saw him walk with Anne.
ฉันเห็นเขาเดินอยู่กับแอน

Jo heard the car honk.
โจได้ยินเสียงรถบีบแตร

3. ใช้ infinitive without to กับคำว่า make และ let

เราจะใช้ infinitive without to กับคำว่า make และ let อย่างเช่น

He made my kid cry.
เขาทำลูกฉันร้องไห้

My friends let me stay with them this week.
เพื่อนๆฉันให้ฉันอาศัยอยู่ด้วยในอาทิตย์นี้

4. ใช้ infinitive without to หลังคำว่า why

เราสามารถใช้ infinitive without to ตามหลังคำว่า why ซึ่งมักจะใช้ในภาษาพูด อย่างเช่น

Why ask me about Tim?
ทำไมถึงถามเรื่องทิมกับฉันล่ะ

Why look at me like that?

See you next time

[NEW] Gerund คือ | gerund คือ – NATAVIGUIDES

Gerund คืออะไร

     Gerund คือ verb รูป -ing ที่ใช้เหมือน noun ตัวอย่างเช่น

Eating is my happiness.

Eating too much sugar is bad for your health. (การกินน้ำตาลมากเกินไปนั้นไม่ดีต่อสุขภาพ)

ในตัวอย่างประโยคนี้ คำว่า eating จะเป็น gerund ส่วนทั้งวลี eating too much sugar นั้นจะถือว่าเป็น gerund phrase

Swimming is a good exercise. (การว่ายน้ำเป็นการออกกำลังกายที่ดี)

Loving yourself is not selfish. (การรักตัวเองไม่ใช่การเห็นแก่ตัว)

Smoking can be harmful to the health of those around you. (การสูบบุหรี่สามารถก่อให้เกิดอันตรายแก่คนรอบข้างได้)

     2. ใช้ gerund เป็นกรรม

เราสามารถใช้ gerund เป็นกรรมของประโยค (gerund as object) โดยตำแหน่งของ gerund จะอยู่หลัง verb เช่น miss, mind, deny, enjoy, avoid หรือ keep ตัวอย่างประโยคเช่น

– I like swimming. (ฉันชอบการว่ายน้ำ)

– China bans gaming for young children. (ประเทศจีนแบนการเล่นเกมในเด็กที่มีอายุน้อย)

– Tim enjoys reading books. (ทิมสนุกกับการอ่านหนังสือ)

     3. ใช้ gerund เป็นส่วนเติมเต็ม

     ทบทวนความรู้

ส่วนเติมเต็มของประธาน (subject complement) คือคำที่ให้ข้อมูลเพิ่มเติมเกี่ยวกับประธาน เวลาใช้มักจะตามหลัง linking verb เช่น verb to be อย่าง is, am, are, was, were, feel, seem, look, smell, stay, remain, get, become

– My favorite activity is drawing. (กิจกรรมโปรดของฉันคือการวาดรูป)

– What the boss dislikes most is being late. (สิ่งที่หัวหน้าไม่ชอบมากที่สุดคือการมาสาย)

และ gerund ที่ทำหน้าที่เป็นส่วนเติมเต็มของกรรม (gerund as object complement) ตัวอย่างประโยคเช่น

– I saw John running yesterday. (ฉันเห็นจอห์นวิ่งเมื่อวานนี้)

– My uncle found a cat sleeping under the tree. (ลุงของฉันเจอแมวนอนหลับอยู่ใต้ต้นไม้)

     4. ใช้ gerund หลัง preposition

Preposition (คำบุพบท) คือคำที่ใช้หน้า noun เพื่อเชื่อม noun นั้นกับคำอื่น เช่นคำว่า in, on, at, to, before, after

เนื่องจาก gerund นั้นทำหน้าที่เหมือน noun เราจึงสามารถใช้ gerund ไว้หลัง preposition ได้ ตัวอย่างประโยคเช่น

– I am sorry for being late. (ฉันขอโทษที่มาสาย)

– They had difficulty in understanding my accent. (พวกเขามีความลำบากในการทำความเข้าใจสำเนียงของฉัน)

– Anne is very good at singing. (แอนเก่งมากกับการร้องเพลง)

(Gerund หรือคำนามที่อยู่หลัง preposition จะมีชื่อเรียกว่ากรรมของบุพบท หรือ object of preposition)
