ประโยคแบบ Conditional คือประโยคที่ให้เงื่อนไขหรือสมมติเหตุการณ์ที่อาจจะเกิดขึ้นจริงตามนั้น เป็นไปได้ยาก หรือไม่มีทางที่จะเป็นไปได้ มีอยู่ 3 แบบ คือ

1. Present Conditional
2. Past Conditional
3. Past Perfect Conditional

ตัวอย่างประโยค If Clause

1. Present Conditional sentence: ประโยคที่ให้เงื่อนไขหรือสมมติเหตุการณ์ที่อาจจะเกิดขึ้นจริงตามนั้น

โครงสร้างของประโยค

Conditional clause Main clauseIf + Simple present tenseFuture/Simple present tense

Ex.

• If it rains, I will stay at home.
• If the teacher asks you, tell him the truth.
• If you leave, please turn out the light.

Note

1. Imperative + and + Simple Future construction

Come here and you will get what you want.

2. Imperative + or else + Simple Future construction

Do it, or else you will be punished.

3. should + imperative construction

Should an emergency arise, dial 191.

4. would like/ would care + Simple Future construction

would like / would care มีความหมายว่า “ต้องการ หรือ ปรารถนา”

If you would like to come, I’ll wait for you.

ถ้าคุณอยากจะมา ผมก็จะรอคุณ

If you would care to hand in your books, I’ll correct them for you.

2. Past Conditional sentence: ประโยคที่ให้เงื่อนไขหรือสมมติเหตุการณ์ที่เป็นไปได้ยาก

โครงสร้างของประโยค

Ex.

• If it rained, he would stay at home. ถ้าฝนตกจริง ๆ ผมก็คงจะอยู่บ้าน
• If you were to attend the wedding, what would you be?
• If I had more time, I would read more books. (แต่ขณะนี้ฉันไม่มีเวลา)
• If it were not so far, we could walk there.
• If I were you, I would not let him say many things.

Note

1. ละ If แล้วเอา were มาไว้หน้าประโยคได้

Ex.

• If he were to leave today, he would be there by Tuesday. = Were he to leave today, he would be there by Tuesday.
• If he had wings, he would fly. = Were he had wings, he would fly.

2. It’s (high/about) time + Past simple tense

• It’s high time you did your work.
• ถึงเวลาแล้วที่คุณจะต้องทำงานของคุณ

3. If only/wish + Past simple tense + conditional past

• If only I knew the answer, I would tell you.
• แหมถ้าผมรู้คำตอบ ผมก็คงจะบอกคุณแล้ว
• I wish I were here.
• แหมผมเองก็อยากอยู่ที่นี่ (แต่ความจริงไม่ได้อยู่)

 4. _______as if/ as though + Past simple tense

• Roger appears as though/ as if he were unhappy.
• โรเจอร์แสดงอากัปกริยาคล้ายดังกับว่าเขาไม่มีความสุข

3. Past Perfect Conditional sentence: ประโยคที่ให้เงื่อนไขหรือสมมติเหตุการณ์ที่ไม่มีทางที่จะเป็นไปได้

โครงสร้างของประโยค

• If you had invited her, she would have come to your party.
• If John had gotten up earlier, he would have had time for breakfast.
• If I had had her address, I would have written to her.

Note

1. ละ If แล้วเอา had มาไว้หน้าประโยคได้If it had rained, I would have taken my umbrella.

• Had it rained, I would have taken my umbrella.
• If he had been thirsty, I’m sure he would have drunk it.
• Had he been thirsty, I’m sure he would have drunk it.

2. If only/wish + Past perfect tense + Perfect conditional

• If only I had known the answer, I would have told you.
• I wish I had remembered his name.

นอกจาก if แล้ว ยังมีคำอื่นทีใช้ในประโยคเงื่อนไขอีก คือ

1. suppose หรือ supposing สมมติว่า
2. on condition that หรือ on the condition that โดยมีเงื่อนไขว่า
3. so long as หรือ as long as ถ้า ตราบใดที่
4. what if สมมติว่า

    เชื่อว่าทุกคนคงเคยเห็นประโยคหรือแต่งประโยคโดยการใช้ If clause กันมาบ้างแล้วใช่มั้ย แต่เชื่อมั้ยเอ่ยว่าคนไทยส่วนใหญ่ไม่แน่ใจว่าต้องใช้ If clause ยังไง เพราะหลักการมันก็ค่อนข้างแอดว๊านซ์กว่าภาษาไทยอยู่นะ

If clause คือ ประโยคเงื่อนไข ซึ่งจะมี 2 ประโยคย่อย ได้แก่

• ประโยคหลัก หรือ Main Clause
• ประโยคที่ขึ้นต้นด้วย If หรือ If Cluase

 

  

 1) Zero Conditional Sentences (If clause type 0)

ใช้กับเหตุการณ์ที่เป็นจริงเสมอ (สามารถใช้ when แทน if ได้ด้วย) ซึ่ง If cluase (ประโยคเงื่อนไข) กับ Main cluase (ประโยคหลัก) สามารถสลับตำแหน่งกันได้

– If you heat water to 100 celsius, it boils.
         water boils if you heat it to 100 celsius.
                

หรือใช้สำหรับประโยคคำสั่งใน Main clause ได้ด้วย เช่น

    If Gary calls, tell him to come and see me tomorrow

    Tell him to come and see me tomorrow if (when) Gary calls.
                

    2) First Conditional Sentences (If clause type 1)

ใช้กับเหตุการณ์ที่อาจจะเกิดขึ้นจริง/อาจจะเป็นไปได้ รูปแบบนี้จะมี Modal หรือกริยาช่วย (เช่น can, may, might, shall, should, must, ….) เพิ่มเข้ามาด้วย ซึ่งโครงสร้างสามารถเขียนได้ 2 แบบเช่นกัน

– If their teacher teaches, the students may come to school.

       ถ้าคุณครูสอน นักเรียนอาจมาโรงเรียน

        Students may come to school if their teacher teaches.

         นักเรียนอาจมาโรงเรียน ถ้าครูสอนหนังสือ
            ***ในที่นี้นักเรียนอาจจะมาหรือไม่มาโรงเรียนก็ได้***

 

– If Tom studies hard, he will pass the exam.

        ถ้าทอมตั้งใจเรียน เขาจะสอบผ่าน
         Tom will pass the exam if he studies hard.
        ทอมจะสอบผ่าน ถ้าเขาตั้งใจเรียน

            ***ในที่นี้ทอมอาจจะสอบผ่านหรือไม่ผ่านก็ได้***

 

 

    3) Second Conditional Sentences (If clause type 2)

ใช้กับเหตุการณ์ที่เป็นไปไม่ได้ ไม่เป็นจริง เพ้อฝันเกิ๊นนนน (สามารถใช้ could กับ might แทน would ได้จ้า)

–   If had a million bath, I would travel around the world.
        ถ้าฉันมีเงินหนึ่งล้านบาท ฉันจะไปเที่ยวรอบโลก

        I would travel around the world if I had a million bath

        ฉันจะไปเที่ยวรอบโลกถ้าฉันมีเงินหนึ่งล้านบาท

        ***ในที่นี้เป็นไปไม่ได้เลย เพ้อฝันมากเว่อร์***

 

If Mike won the lottery first prize, he could buy a Ferrari.
        ถ้าไมค์ถูกล็อตเตอรีรางวัลที่หนึ่ง เขาสามารถซื้อรถเฟอรารีได้

 

        Mike could buy a Ferrari if he won the lottery first prize.
        ไมค์สามารถซื้อรถเฟอรารีได้ ถ้าเขาถูกล็อตเตอรี่รางวัลที่หนึ่ง

    

***ในที่นี้เป็นไปไม่ได้เลยย เอิ่ม…ถูกเลขท้ายสองตัวให้ได้ก่อนนน***

 

    4) Third Conditional Sentences (If clause type 3)

ใช้กับเหตุการณ์ที่ตรงกันข้ามกับความเป็นจริงที่เกิดขึ้น ณ ตอนนั้นหรือในอดีต หรือกล่าวถึงความเสียดาย ประมาณว่ารู้งี้น่าจะ… เฮ้อ เสียดายจัง

– If she had taken medicine, she wouldn’t have gone to the hospital.

      ถ้าหล่อนกินยาตอนนั้น คงไม่ต้องไปถึงโรงพยาบาลหรอก

    

    She wouldn’t have gone to the hospital if she had taken medicine,

    หล่อนคงไม่ต้องไปถึงโรงพยาบาลหรอก ถ้าหล่อนกันยาซะตั้งแต่ตอนนั้น

    

    ***ในที่นี้ความจริงเป็นเพราะเธอไม่ได้กินยา ตอนนี้เธอจึงต้องไปโรงพยาบาล***

 

–  If I had known the time schedule before, I wouldn’t have arrived late.

        ถ้าฉันรู้ตารางเวลาก่อนหน้านี้ ฉันคงจะไม่มาสาย

    

    I wouldn’t have arrived late if I had known the time schedule before.

    ฉันคงจะไม่มาสายถ้าฉันรู้ตารางเวลาก่อนหน้านี้

    

    ***ในที่นี้มาสายแล้ว เพราะไม่รู้ตารางเวลามาก่อน จึงเกิดความเสียดาย***
