สมัยที่โลกยังมีสงครามและการยึดอำนาจทางอาณานิคมที่เมืองต่างๆกันอยู่ สิ่งที่มาควบคู่กันคือการแลกเปลี่ยนทางด้านวัฒนธรรมนั้นเอง ทั้งการดำรงชีพ ภาษา อาหาร เป็นต้น สำหรับอิทธิพลของอาหารก็ไม่สามารถหลีกเลี่ยงได้ว่าทุกชาติล้วนได้รับอิทธิพลจากชาติอื่นไม่ทางใดก็ทางหนึ่งทั้งสิ้น สำหรับอาหารอังกฤษนั้นได้รับอิทธิพลมาจากต่างประเทศหรือแม้แต่ประเทศในเครือราชอาณาจักรด้วยกัน ตั้งแต่ชาวไวกิ้งที่เข้ามาบุกรุกแผ่นดิน หลังจากนั้นก็ตามด้วยชาวโรมันหรือแม้แต่ขาวฝรั่งเศสก็มาทิ้งร่องรอยทางประวัติศาสตร์ให้กับชาวอังกฤษกันทั้งสิ้น
เมนูประจำชาติของอังกฤษมีอะไรบ้าง
Afternoon tea และวัฒนธรรมการดื่มชาที่เข้ามาในอังกฤษ
ในช่วงสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 1 สมัยที่อังกฤษเข้ายึดเมืองในเอเชียใต้ หลังจากหมดสงคราม ทหารก็ได้นำเอาวัฒนธรรมการดื่มชามาสู่ชาวอังกฤษและชาวอังกฤษเองเมื่อไปล่าอาณานิคมที่ประเทศอินเดียก็นำวัฒนธรรมการดื่มชาไปสู่อินเดีย กลับกันอินเดียก็ได้นำวัฒนธรรมการปรุงอาหารโดยใช้เครื่องเทศและซอสที่มีรสจัดมาสู่ชาวอังกฤษ จนทั้งสองอย่างนี้ได้ทำให้เกิดอาหารพื้นเมืองหลายเมนูที่ยังคงอยู่ในปัจจุบัน
Afternoon Tea เกิดขึ้นในช่วงทศวรรษที่ 19 สมัยนั้นนิยมทานอาหารเพียง 2 มื้อเท่านั้นคือมื้อเช้าและมื้อค่ำ ดังนั้นช่วงบ่ายจึงหิวมากทำให้เกิดวัฒนธรรมการดื่มชายามบ่ายขึ้น เริ่มที่ Duchess Anna ที่เธอได้ชวนเพื่อนๆ ของเธอมาจิบชายามบ่ายที่บ้านจนทำให้เกิดเป็นธรรมเนียมที่ปฏิบัติกันต่อๆมาสำหรับสุภาพสตรีชั้นสูง จนแพร่หลายสู่ทุกคน ซึ่งในปัจจุบันเอง Afternoon tea ก็เป็นที่นิยมกันแพร่หลายทั่วโลก โดยมักเสิร์ฟคู่กับเมนูขนมเช่น สโคน แซนวิช เป็นต้น ประดับสวยงามวางเรียงเป็นชั้นเล็กๆ ส่วนวิธีการทานนั้นชาวอังกฤษเองก็มีธรรมเนียมปฏิบัติอยู่แล้วนั้นคือต้องทานขนมจากชั้นบนสุดก่อนไล่ลงมาเรื่อยๆ ทีละชั้น พอทานชั้นไหนหมดแล้วก็นำจานรองออก ทานไปเรื่อยๆ จนกระทั่งชั้นสุดท้ายนั้นเอง
The Full English breakfast เป็นที่รู้จักกันทั่วในราชอาณาจักร เป็นเมนูมื้อเช้าที่ไม่ได้นิยมทานทุกวัน แต่จะทานเฉพาะในช่วงสุดสัปดาห์หรือวันหยุดเท่านั้น โดยที่คำว่า “full” มาจากการที่หมายถึงอาหารที่หลากหลายชนิดจนเต็ม ซึ่งเป็นเมนูที่นิยมทานได้ตลอดทั้งวัน มักจะเริ่มต้นด้วยน้ำส้ม ซีเรียลหรือผลไม้สด แล้วต่อด้วยจานสุดพิเศษที่เต็มไปด้วยอาหารอย่าง เบคอน ไข่ ไส้กรอก มะเขือเทศย่าง เห็ดและหัวหอมย่าง ขนมปัง เป็นต้น เสิร์ฟพร้อมด้วยชาและกาแฟ
คนอังกฤษนิยมเรียก Full English breakfast ว่า fry-up หรือ full Monty เพราะเป็นเมนูที่ย่างและทอดเป็นส่วนใหญ่
Classic British Fish and Chips
ฟิชแอนด์ชิปส์ หรือเมนูปลาทอดทานคู่กับเฟรนฟรายส์ทอดที่นิยมกันทั่วโลกก็เป็นเมนูสุดคลาสสิคของชาวอังกฤษที่มีประวัติศาสตร์ยาวนานมาตั้งแต่ศตวรรษที่ 17 โดยชาวยิวที่นำเอาเมนูเข้ามาสู่อังกฤษจนทำให้เป็นที่นิยมกันในปัจจุบัน สำหรับการทานเมนูนี้นั้นถ้าต้องการความเป็นออริจินอลของอังกฤษต้องทานริมทะเล รับลมและแสงแดด เป็นบรรยากาศที่สุดชิลในขณะที่ทานเมนูนี้อย่างเอร็ดอร่อย
Traditional Yorkshire Pudding
เป็นอีกหนึ่งเมนูสุดคลาสสิคของอังกฤษที่เป็นที่นิยมทานกันอย่างกว้าวขวาง แต่เมนูพุดดิ้งของอังกฤษนั้นจะแตกต่างจากพุดดิ้งที่เป็นขนมหวาน เพราะพุดดิ้งในที่นี่คือการนำแป้งอบแล้วเสริฟคู่กับเนื้อราดด้วยน้ำเกรวี่ เป็นอีกหนึ่งเมนูสุดอร่อยที่ต้องลองทานเมื่อมาถึงอังกฤษ
Creamy Chicken Tikka Masala เป็นเมนูที่มาจากคนอินเดียที่เข้ามาตั้งถิ่นฐานในอังกฤษในสมัยก่อน ซึ่งถือได้ว่ามีแหล่งกำเนิดที่อังกฤษ เรียกสั้นๆ ว่า แกงไก่ทิกก้าซึ่งเป็นแกงที่มีความเข้มข้นของครีมและมะเขือเทศปรุงรสกับเครื่องเทศของอินเดียจนน้ำแกงกลายเป็นสีส้ม ซึ่งรสชาติจะจัดนิดๆ แต่อร่อยลงตัว

Britain เป็นชื่ออาณาจักรที่เป็นที่ตั้งของสี่ประเทศคือ สก็อตแลนด์ อังกฤษ เวลส์ และไอร์แลนด์เหนือ (ชื่อเต็มคือสหราชอาณาจักรของบริเทนใหญ๋และไอร์แลนด์เหนือ หรือ United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland) ประเทศสหราชอาณาจักรซึ่งเคยเป็นสมาชิกของสหภาพยุโรปมาอย่างยาวนานได้มีการทำประชาเสียงให้ประชาชนของประเทศสหราชอาณาจักร ทำการลงคะแนนเสียงว่าอยากอยู่ต่อ หรือออกจากสหภาพยุโรป และผลการลงคะแนนโดยการนับผลรวมของจำนวนผู้ลงคะแนนที่อาศัยอยู่ในประเทศทั้งสี่ประเทศออกมาเกิน 50% จึงทำให้ ประเทศสหราชอาณาจักรได้ถอนตัวออกจากสหภาพยุโรปนั่นเอง สิ่งที่ผมพยายามจะอธิบายให้ท่านผู้ชมได้ทราบคือ ไม่ใช่แค่ประเทศอังกฤษที่ออกจากสหภาพยุโรปตามที่หลายๆช่องข่าวในเมืองไทยรายงานมาอย่างผิดๆเพราะอาจจะยังไม่เข้าใจหรือใช้คำเรียกชื่อประเทศสหราชอาณาจักรอย่างผิดๆ ความเป็นจริงคือ ทั้งหมดสี่ประเทศ (สหาราชอาณาจักร) ที่ออกจากสหภาพยุโรปตามผลของการโหวดลงคะแนนเสียงนั้่นเอง เพราะฉะนั้นจากนี้ไปถ้าท่านได้ยินนักอ่านข่าวบอกว่าอังกฤษได้ถอนตัวออกจากสหภาพยุโรปนั้น เป็นการให้ข่าวที่ไม่ได้ให้ข้อมูลที่ดีและชัดเจนอย่างถูกต้องที่สุดนั่นเอง
