Gerunds
1. ประธาน (subject)
ตัวอย่าง
Traveling might satisfy your desire for new experiences.
การเดินทางอาจจะสนองตอบความปรารถนาด้วยประสบการณ์ใหม่ๆ ของคุณ
หมายเหตุ กรณีนี้รูปกริยา Traveling เป็นประธาน ก็เพราะวางอยู่หน้ากริยาหลักของประโยค นั่นคือ might satisfy
2. กรรมตรง (direct object)
ตัวอย่าง
I hope that you appreciate my offering you this opportunity.
ผมหวังว่าคุณจะชื่นชอบการที่ผมให้โอกาสคุณครั้งนี้
หมายเหตุ กรณีนี้ my offering you this opportunity เป็นกรรมตรง ก็ เพราะเป็นการตอบคำถามว่า ชื่นชอบ <appreciate> “อะไร’’
3. ประธานเสริม (subject complement)
ตัวอย่าง
His favorite activity is playing golf.
กิจกรรมที่ชื่นชอบของเขาคือการเล่นกอล์ฟ
= Playing golf is his favorite activity.
หมายเหตุ กรณีนี้ playing golf เป็นเสมือนประธานเสริม อยู่หลัง verb to be “is” ส่วน Playing golf ที่วางอยู่หน้าประโยค ทำหน้าที่ประธาน
4. กรรมของบุพบท (object of preposition)
ตัวอย่าง
She suffered for years without complaining.
เธอทนทุกข์มาหลายปีโดยไม่ปริปากบ่น
หมายเหตุ กรณีนี้รูปกริยา complaining วางอยู่หลังบุพบท <preposition> คือ “without” จึงถือว่าเป็นกรรมของบุพบท
ประเภทของ Gerunds
จากตัวอย่างข้างบน อาจจะกล่าวคร่าวๆ ได้ว่า gerunds อาจจะเป็นกริยารูป ing ที่ทำหน้าที่นามที่เป็นคำเดี่ยว เรียกว่า single-word gerunds และที่เป็นวลี คือมีถ้อยคำอื่นตามหลังกริยารูป ing ที่ทำหน้าที่นาม เรียกว่า gerund phrase เช่น
single-word gerunds gerund phrases
traveling traveling to the countryside
waiting waiting for a bus

excuse finish like (=enjoy) postpone
practise mind miss begin
continue hate prefer risk
suggest involve justify spend (time)

Do you mind opening the window?
คุณจะรังเกียจไหมครับที่จะเปิดหน้าต่างให้หน่อย
Mother doesn’t like me wearing this suit.
แม่ไม่ชอบให้ดิฉันสวมใส่ชุดนี้
หมายเหตุ มีบ่อยที่หน้า gerund มี object pronouns เช่น me, him, her, them, us, you, it หรือ possessive adjectives เข่น my, his, her, their, our, your, its เมื่อวางอยู่หลังคำกริยาดังกล่าวมา
โปรดดูตัวอย่างเพิ่มเติมจากหมายเหตุในหัวข้อนี้
(1) ใช้รูป possessive adjective + gerund
When she hears her husband’s (whistle) she accompanies it with (sing).
→When she hears his whistling she accompanies it with singing.
(2) ใช้รูป object pronoun + gerund
I remember George (take) out his cheque book but I didn’t notice him (write) it.
→I remember him taking out his cheque book but I didn’t notice him writing it.
2. gerunds after prepositions
เราใช้ gerunds เมื่อวางอยู่หลังคำบุพบท ได้แก่ for, of, on, after, before, with, without, by, from, about, at
ตัวอย่าง

คุณเคยคิดว่าจะส่งดอกไม้ไปให้เธอบ้างไหม
5. gerunds after verbs and objects
เราใช้ gerunds หลังคำกริยา (verbs) ที่มักมีกรรม (objects) รองรับ ดังโครงสร้าง verb + object + gerund ได้แก่
find hear notice see
watch feel observe smell
ตัวอย่าง
The waiter heard a man yawning.
พนักงานเสิร์ฟได้ยินชายคนหนึ่งหาว
Did you notice them waving?
The waiter heard a man yawn.
Did you notice them wave?
6. gerunds after “go”
เราใช้ gerund หลังกริยา go (รวม went และ gone) เมื่อตามด้วย คำกริยา (verbs) ที่แสดงความหมายเชิงกิจกรรมสันทนาการ (recreational activities) ได้แก่
boat fish sail ski
bowl hike shop swim
camp hunt sightsee windsurf

เสียเวลาเปล่าที่จะชมภาพยนตร์เรื่องนั้น
ต่างความหมาย
คำกริยาบางคำ เมื่อตามด้วยรูป gerunds และ infinitives จะให้ความหมายที่แตกต่างกัน ทั้งนี้การจะเลือกใช้รูป gerunds หรือ infinitives ต้องอาศัยการตีความหมายเป็นสำคัญ ได้แก่

ฉันจำได้ว่าได้ส่งจดหมายไปแล้ว
I must remember to post the letter.

4. try + gerunds VS try + to-infinitives
ตัวอย่าง

ผมทดลองกลั้นลมหายใจ
I try to hold my breath.
ผมพยายามกลั้นลมหายใจ
หมายเหตุ เมื่อใช้ try + gerund จะหมายถึง “ทดลอง’’ (experiment) เหมือนกับการทดลองทางวิทยาศาสตร์แต่ถ้าใช้ try + to-infinitive จะหมายถึง “พยายาม’’ คือ พยายามที่จะทำบางสิ่งบางอย่าง
5. stop + gerunds vs stop + to-infinitives
ตัวอย่าง
You must stop smoking.
คุณจะต้องหยุด (เลิก) สูบบุหรี่
He stopped his car to smoke.

Verbal Noun
ภารกิจ (function) ของ gerund
1. ใช้ทำหน้าที่ได้อย่างคำนาม
(ก) เป็นประธาน (subject) ของกริยา
1. Swimming is a good exercise.
การว่ายนํ้าเป็นการออกกำลังกายที่ดี
2. Working in this condition is pleasure.
การทำงานในสภาพอย่างนี้เป็นสิ่งน่าสนุก
(ข) เป็น complement ของกริยา
1. The only thing that interests her is dancing.
สิ่งเดียวที่ทำให้เธอสนใจคือการเต้นรำ
2. Seeing is believing.
การเห็นคือการเชื่อ
(ค) เป็นกรรม (object) ของกริยา
1. I remember seeing him.
ผมจำได้ว่าเห็นเขา
2. She likes dancing.
หล่อนชอบการเต้นรำ
(ง) เป็นกรรม (object) ของ preposition
1. He began by explaining the meaning of certain words.
เขาเริ่มต้นด้วยการอธิบายความหมายของคำบางคำ
2. She is very fond of dancing.
หล่อนชอบเต้นรำมาก
3. Thank you for returning the book.
ขอบคุณที่นำหนังสือมาคืน
4. He left without saying anything.
เขาจากไปโดยไม่พูดอะไรเลย
2. gerund (กริยาเติม ing) อาจใช้คล้ายๆ กับเป็นคำกริยา คือ
(ก) สามารถมี object ได้ เช่น
1. His hobby is collecting stamps.
งานอดิเรกของเขาคือการเก็บรวบรวม (สะสม) แสตมป์
2. Meeting you has been a great pleasure.
การพบคุณทำให้ (ผม) มีความพอใจมาก
(ข) สามารถมี adverb มาประกอบได้เช่นเดียวกับคำกริยา เช่น
1. She likes driving fast.
หล่อนชอบขับรถเร็ว
2. Reading well will need a lot of practice.
a walking-stick = a stick for walking
[แต่สำหรับ present participle ไม่มี hyphen เช่น the crying baby]
2. เมื่อ gerund ประกอบนาม คำนามนั้นมิใช่เป็นผู้กระทำอาการของกริยาข้างหน้า แต่เมื่อ present participle ใช้ประกอบคำนาม คำนามนั้นเป็นผู้กระทำอาการของกริยาข้างหน้า เช่น
participle : a dancing girl เด็กหญิงซึ่งกำลังเต้นรำ (เด็กหญิงเป็นผู้กระทำอาการ dancing)
gerund : a dancing-teacher ครูสอนเต้นรำ ไม่ใช่ครูซึ่งกำลังเต้นรำ หากแต่เป็นผู้สอนให้คนอื่นเต้น(= teacher of dancing)
participle : a sleeping child เด็กซึ่งกำลังหลับ (child เป็นผู้กระทำอาการ sleeping)
gerund : a sleeping-car รถสำหรับนอน car มิได้เป็นผู้กระทำอาการหลับ (= a car for sleeping in)
participle : running water น้ำซึ่งกำลังไหล (water กระทำอาการ running)
gerund : a running-track ทางสำหรับวิ่ง (track มิได้กระทำอาการวิ่ง)
( = track for running on)
4. gerund (กริยาเติม ing) อาจมีคำแสดงเจ้าของ (possessive) ประกอบข้างหน้า
1. It was no use your telling me not to worry.
ไม่มีประโยชน์ที่คุณจะบอกผมไม่ให้วิตก(=ถึงอย่างไรผมก็วิตก)
2. He was chosen because of his being a fully qualified engineer.
เขาได้รับเลือกเพราะการเป็นวิศวกรที่มีคุณสมบัติครบถ้วนของเขา
3. She was annoyed at your saying that.
หล่อนรำคาญต่อการพูดอย่างนั้นของคุณ (= รำคาญในการที่คุณพูดอย่างนั้น)
4. Please excuse my interrupting you.
โปรดอภัยต่อการขัดจังหวะของผม (=โปรดอภัยที่ผมได้ขัดจังหวะคุณ)
Note 1. การใช้คำแสดงเจ้าของประกอบข้างหน้า gerund (กริยา ing) นี้ โดยปกตินิยมใช้เมื่อเป็นประธานของประโยค เช่น
1. Your being right doesn’t necessarily mean my being wrong.
การที่คุณถูก ไม่จำเป็นจะต้องหมายความว่าผมผิด
2. I am sure Dang’s sitting up so late is bad for his health.
ผมเชื่อว่า การนั่งทำงานดึกๆ ของแดงเป็นอันตรายต่อสุขภาพของเขา
Note 2. หลังคำกริยาดังต่อไปนี้ นิยมใช้กับ possessive + gerund (คำแสดงเจ้าของ+ กริยา ing) เสมอ คือ
delay (=ชักช้า, ประวิงเวลา), deny (=ปฏิเสธ) postpone (=เลื่อนเวลา)
1. Don’t delay your sending in of the application form.
อย่าชักช้าในการส่งใบสมัครของคุณ
2. He doesn’t deny his breaking of the agreement.
เขามิได้ปฏิเสธการที่เขาทำลายข้อตกลง
3. I had to postpone my listening to his plans to a later date.
ผมจำเป็นต้องเลื่อนกำหนดการฟังแผนการของเขาไปวันหลัง
อย่างไรก็ตาม ที่กล่าวมานี้มักจะได้พบเห็นในภาษาเขียน (literary) แต่ในภาษาพูดนิยมใช้ personal pronoun มากกว่า เช่นแทนที่จะใช้ his, her, my, … นิยมใช้ he (him), she (her), I (me), … มากกว่า และใน กรณีที่เป็นคำนามเขาก็ไม่ใช้ ’s คงใช้นามตัวนั้นลอยๆ เช่น
ภาษาเขียน: He was chosen because of his being a fully qualified engineer.
ภาษาพูด: He was chosen because of him being a fully qualified engineer.
เขาได้รับเลือกเพราะว่าเขาเป็นวิศวกรที่มีคุณสมบัติครบถ้วน
ภาษาเขียน: She was annoyed at your saying that.
ภาษาพูด: She was annoyed at you saying that.
หล่อนรู้สึกรำคาญที่คุณกล่าวเช่นนั้น

Use the Infinitive (without “to”) after:
– Modal verbs: You should see a doctor.
– Auxiliary verbs: We‘ll go swimming tomorrow.
– let, make and help.
– Example 1: Let‘s go shopping.
– Example 2: Help me carry my shoes.
– Example 3: Sometimes she makes me want to scream!
Negative Forms:
Target language form the negative with “not”:
– Gerunds: I don’t like shopping.
– Infinitives (with “to”): I don’t want to go shopping.
– Infinitives (without “to”): I won’t go shopping.
These verbs can be followed with either the gerund or infinitive (with “to”) with no difference in meaning:
– begin, continue, prefer, start. For example:
– I prefer doing yoga.
– I prefer to do yoga.
These verbs can be followed with either the gerund or infinitive (with “to”), but the meaning is different:
– try, remember, forget, need.
– Example 1:
– Try not to hurt yourself again. (This means, make an effort to do something.)
– You should try going to an Italian restaurant. (This means, try something to see if you like it.)
– Example 2:
– Remember to fasten your seatbelt. (This means, don’t forget something.)
– I remember seeing you in high school. (This means, having a memory of something.)
– Example 3:
– I forgot to bring my luggage. (This means, you didn’t remember something.)
– I’ll never forget seeing the beautiful scenery. (This means, you did something and you won’t forget it. It’s more common in the negative form.)
– Example 4:
– You need to buy a new car. (This means, you must do something.)
– That car needs repairing. (This means, the subject needs something.)
