นี่เธอ ฉันชอบกินซาหริ่มมาก (คำว่าซาหริ่มที่ถูกต้อง ต้องเขียนว่า “ซาหริ่ม” นะเพื่อน ๆ ไม่ใช่ “สลิ่ม” แบบที่เราเห็นกันในโซเชียลนะ) ขอกินอีกสักหนึ่งถุงได้มั้ย ? เพื่อน ๆ เคยสงสัยมั้ยว่า อีกสักหนึ่ง อีกสิ่งหนึ่ง หรืออีกอันหนึ่งเนี่ย ต้องใช้คำศัพท์ภาษาอังกฤษตัวไหนกันแน่ระหว่าง another, other หรือ the other ซึ่งวันนี้ English Academy by StartDee จะมาไขข้อสงสัย อ่านบทความจบปุ๊บ ใช้ another, other และ the other คล่องปั๊บ !

การใช้ Another

Another แปลว่า อีกสิ่งหนึ่ง หรืออีกอันหนึ่งที่ไม่ชี้เฉพาะเจาะจง ใช้กับคำนามเอกพจน์เท่านั้น สามารถใช้ได้ใน 2 ความหมาย ดังนี้

• เพิ่มอีกหนึ่งอัน >> โดยไม่ว่าจะเป็นการขอเพิ่ม การได้มาหรือมีของสิ่งนั้นเพิ่ม ก็สามารถใช้ Another ได้ โดยเราจะใช้เมื่อมีการกล่าวถึงสิ่งของหรือบุคคลนั้น ๆ เป็นครั้งที่ 2

There’s another letter! Mr. H. Potter, The Smallest Bedroom, 4 Privet Drive —

มีจดหมายมาเพิ่มอีกหนึ่งฉบับ ! เรียนคุณ ฮ. พอตเตอร์ ห้องนอนที่เล็กที่สุด บ้านเลขที่ 4 ซอยพรีเว็ต…

จะเห็นได้ว่าในตัวอย่างนี้ใช้ another + letter ซึ่งเป็นคำนามเอกพจน์

Can I have another cup of butterbeer?

ฉันขอบัตเตอร์เบียร์อีกหนึ่งแก้วได้ไหม

จะเห็นได้ว่าในตัวอย่างนี้ใช้ another + cup ซึ่งเป็นคำนามเอกพจน์

• ไม่ต้องการอันนี้ ขอเปลี่ยนเป็นอีกอันแทน

ผ้าคลุมล่องหนผืนนี้ไม่พอดีตัวผมเลย คุณมีไซส์อื่นไหม

จะเห็นได้ว่าในตัวอย่างนี้ใช้ another + size ซึ่งเป็นคำนามเอกพจน์

เธอควรสุภาพกับคนไม่มีเวทมนตร์คนอื่น ๆ 

จะเห็นได้ว่าในตัวอย่างนี้ใช้  other + non-magic people ซึ่งเป็นคำนามพหูพจน์

เธอมีรองเท้าบูตหนังมังกรไว้เปลี่ยนหรือเปล่า

จะเห็นได้ว่าในตัวอย่างนี้ใช้  other + dragon-leather boots ซึ่งเป็นคำนามพหูพจน์

The other แปลว่า อีก…ที่เหลือ ใช้เมื่อผู้พูดพูดถึงของสองอย่าง โดยพูดถึงอย่างแรกไปแล้ว และเหลืออีกแค่ 1 อย่างให้กล่าวถึงเป็นอย่างสุดท้าย หรือใช้เมื่อผู้พูดรู้จำนวนของสิ่งที่มีอย่างแน่ชัด (เจาะจงไปเลยว่าเหลืออีกกี่อย่างบ้าง) The other ใช้ได้กับทั้งคำนามเอกพจน์และพหูพจน์

We have 2 broomsticks. The one is Firebolt. The other broomstick is Nimbus 2000.

เรามีไม้กวาดอยู่ 2 ด้าม ด้ามหนึ่งยี่ห้อไฟร์โบลต์ ส่วนอีกด้ามยี่ห้อนิมบัส 2000

จะเห็นได้ว่าในตัวอย่างนี้ใช้  the other + broomstick ซึ่งเป็นคำนามเอกพจน์ โดยในประโยคนี้ เราพูดถึงไม้กวาดนิมบัส 2000 ที่เหลืออยู่อย่างเฉพาะเจาะจงเพียงด้ามเดียว ไม่ได้พูดถึงไม้กวาดด้ามไหนก็ได้ จึงต้องใช้คำว่า The other

We have 4 broomsticks. The one is Firebolt. The other broomsticks are Nimbus 2000.

เรามีไม้กวาดอยู่ 4 ด้าม ด้ามหนึ่งยี่ห้อไฟร์โบลต์ ส่วนที่เหลือยี่ห้อนิมบัส 2000

จะเห็นได้ว่าในตัวอย่างนี้ใช้  the other + broomsticks ซึ่งเป็นคำนามพหูพจน์ โดยเราพูดถึงไม้กวาดนิมบัส 2000 ที่เหลืออยู่ 3 ด้ามอย่างเฉพาะเจาะจง ไม่ได้พูดถึงไม้กวาดด้ามไหนก็ได้ จึงต้องใช้คำว่า The other นั่นเอง
