4 parts of language

  1. Vocabulary
  2. Input – Listening / Reading
  3. Output – Speaking / Writing
  4. Grammar (ช่วยให้เข้าใจภาษา ไม่ได้ช่วยให้ใช้ภาษา)

Why this order?

1 – Vocab – The main part of language, “Bricks of a house” You can’t build a house without bricks,

You can learn about the blueprints and how to build, but only having bricks with help you build a house. When compared with language learning, it’s like saying the house is the complete native fluency in using a language, the different rooms are full of furniture and other things which can be compared to sentence structures and naturally occurring phrases/sayings/idioms etc.

2- Input – Input is listening and reading.

Dependent of vocab knowledge, or you are just left to guessing from context, which is a long process meant for those born as natives in the language.

– Regular input of native English sources through listening and reading will help you learn the way the language is used in real life. It will help you naturally learn the grammar rules and structures of the language without actually learning them as set lessons and rules.

3 – OutputOutput is speaking and writing.

Dependent on both vocab and listening/reading. You can speak what you’ve never heard before, you can’t write what you’ve never read before.
– If you want to speak/write more fluently then you need to 1-know vocab 2-listen/read often to create a familiarization of how natives speak/write and create sentences. Then when you come to speak/write, you will speak/write from prior knowledge and experience in the language rather than trying to translate from your mother tongue (and most likely leave out words you don’t know or translate them into other irrelevant words.) and then worry about trying to make correct according to the amount of grammar rules that you know. A very inefficient and tiring way to speak/write another language.

4 – Grammar – Only helps understand the language, doesn’t help to use it.
You should only learn to confirm and support already naturally learned sentence structures and grammar rules. In other words, it doesn’t help knowing grammar rules if you don’t know vocab. Why bother with grammar when you need vocab to speak. Grammar may tell you how to create a sentence, i.e + sub + verb + object, but that is of no use if you don’t know any words and if you’ve never spent time listening and reading to see how natives create sentences etc.
– Problem in learning grammar first is = When you want to speak/write you only think about grammar rules and it makes you even more nervous to speak/write because you’re so worried about trying to be 100% correct and not to make a mistake.

– Solution = By learning most often used vocab and spending lots of time listening and reading in the language, when you want to speak/write, you will think about what you have heard and read before and speak/write from your those memories and experiences and so will speak/write more naturally and correct providing that you are regularly learning vocab and regularly inputting native English sources via listening/reading.

Ok so now we know the 4 parts of a language, but
Is it possible practice them alone? YES!

Is it possible to be fluent in another language without being a native of that language? YES!
I don’t have any friends of that language, can I still be fluent? YES!

Let’s go through each of the 4 parts explaining how you can learn by yourself each part.

1. Vocab

Ok, so we know that vocab is the main part of a language. But there are so many words! How can we learn them all? We don’t have to. Not even natives know ALL the words of their language and actually in most everyday situations we only use around 500 words. So for a complete beginner they should start from these 500 words first. After those 500 there are next 1000 and 2000. Once you know all these 2000 then you will have to start learning new words in the language from your input. Every time you read and hear a new word you should make a note of it. Then go back, learn its meaning and put it into your now ever growing list of 2000.  This list is now your record of all the words you know and you will be reviewing always. You will review it every week. Once a week you will need to go through this list and find 20 words that you have forgotten. (If you don’t find 20 words that you don’t know then just wait till the next week, keep on reviewing until you get 20)

How to memorize vocab (20 new words a week or more if you like.

2. Input – Listening and Reading

You don’t have to live in a country where that language is spoken, you just simply have to listen and read of that language. For listening we can use the TV and internet, for reading you can buy books.

I recommend 1 hour of listening and 1 hour of reading every day, but actually you can just use however much time you have free and use this method.

E = Easy 50%
M = Medium 25%
H = Hard 25%

Listening E – Children’s cartoons
Reading E – Children’s books, Comic books

Listening M – Series, Game shows, Reality TV, Documentaries
Reading M – Magazines, Novels (Harry potter)
Listening H – News
Reading H – Newspapers,

3. OutputSpeaking and writing.

“I don’t have any friends in this language so how can I practice speaking and writing?”

Don’t worry, for speaking/writing we will practice via repetition.
Speaking – Watching TV you should spend at least 10 minutes a day repeating after the TV.
“But what if I don’t understand what they’re saying?” Don’t worry, in the beginning because you may have a low vocab level you may not know what is being said, but for now just repeat because this will help with pronunciation, accent and overall fluency. Later as your vocab knowledge and listening/reading input is increased then you will understand more of what is being said and of what you are repeating.
Writing – Copy out 1 A4 page a day. 50% of the page from an easy source, 25% from a medium source and another 25% from a hard source.  One day can be a typed A4 on the computer and the other day can be a written A4 page.
Writing practice via copying will help your handwriting skill and typing skill. It will also help you to review vocabulary as you read and write. You will also start to see sentence structures more clearly as you see their written form more evident through copying practice.

Speaking and writing practice via repetition is great for those who don’t have a chance to practice in real life situations, because the English you are repeating in speaking and writing is from an English native source and is most likely to be correct and natural English. Also it helps create more confidence in yourself so that you are to speak/write in a real life situations you would feel more comfortable doing it because you have already been exposed to various types of real life situations via your input/ repetition-output practice.

4. Grammar

Grammar is important to learn, but it should not be the first thing you learn!
We can see that output (speaking/writing) is dependent on input (listening/reading) and that also is dependent on vocab. So grammar is not actually needed because it will be naturally learned through the input part of a language.

However you may wish to learn grammar to affirm or be more confident in your speaking/writing. But to be honest if all of your input is an English native source then it should already be correct. For most people learning grammar is to past tests, it’s funny though because like I said, knowing grammar only shows you understand how the language works, but doesn’t help you use it. Using a language is the first 3 parts 1.vocab 2.input 3.output. It’s like knowing that the order should be sub+verb+obj, but if you don’t know any subjects or any verbs or any objects then just knowing that structure doesn’t help.

Review.

A more correct way (my experience and explanation proves to be so)

  1. Vocab
  2. Input (Listening/Reading
  3. Output (Speaking/Writing)
  4. Grammar

Lastly let’s talk about “Motivation” or why do you want to learn English?
New language = learn new culture, new knowledge, new ways of thinking, new friends. Etc

Or

Just to pass a test?

Think about your motivation for learning carefully!

คุณศัพท์บอก

X He is an asleep man.
We are alone.    เราอยู่กันตามลำพัง
