For my final video in Thailand (for now!) I wanted to really challenge myself and see JUST how far I could stretch 1000 thai baht (about US $31)
I went just a little over (1050) but I think you will all forgive me and enjoy watching how far your dollar really stretches out in Thailand, or SE Asia for that matter.

The Basic Travel Couple journey began in 2015 at a local Buffalo, NY Establishment in the heart of the Elmwood Village. A few moments after first setting eyes on one another, a very fiery debate began over (what else) traveling and who was the better wedding date (Still to be determined…lol).
2 weeks later we embarked on our first trip and second date to Chicago for a friend’s wedding (Using Travel Points). While visiting the Beantown we quickly recognized that each of us shared a burning desire to explore the world with an emphasis on saving money through Basic Traveling. Since that moment; our love for travel has grown and we have been blessed to visit Key West, Costa Rica, Thailand, Jamaica, Iceland, Finland, Hawaii, Egypt, Greece and dozens of cities throughout the United States all through Basic Traveling.
When traveling, our passion goes far above a typical beach day, although those are certainly necessary! Our emphasis when planning a trip is on including the right amount of adventure and excitement with plenty of time to rest and relax. We spend weeks (sometimes months) narrowing down our travel plans and the activities we want to embark on. Since we both work full time, we typically have a limited time frame during each of these Basic Travel Trips and attempt to fit as much fun in as we can to maximize our experience.
We thoroughly enjoy helping our friends and family go on amazing trips and create longlasting memories for next to nothing using Basic Traveling. If you are someone that wants to Jump Out of a Plane in Hawaii, Sleep in a Glass Igloo in Finland, or go on a $4,782 4night trip at an AllInclusive resort in Jamaica for $280 then you are in the right place.

Todd: So, then we go back to the airport. I don’t know what to do because I’ll be back where I started and I see a hotel. A big hotel, right next to the airport and I tell the cab driver to go there, and so he goes and there’s a bellman, you know, waiting for the cab. I go up and I get out of the cab and I’m really sick and I just wasted three hours. I’m back where I started.
Greg: And you paid the man, like forty dollars and you didn’t get where you wanted to go.
Todd: Right, and this is the interesting point. So we come back and the sweet old cab driver is there and he’s trying to explain to the guy about how he couldn’t find the place I guess, and he looks really flustered.
So then, I’m thinking he wants more money so I pull out my wallet and and I give him another thousand baht. I put it in the cab driver’s hand and he looks at it like it’s a dead fish, like doesn’t want it. And he’s just looking at it and looking at me and he has this really puzzled look, like he doesn’t get it.
So finally the bellman kind of snaps at him in Thai, like you know, something and then the Thai cab driver takes the money and he walks back to the cab and he’s looking back at me like like he feels guilty or he feels bad and he gets in the cab and he drives away.
And then it dawned on me that the cab driver didn’t want to take the money. Like he felt bad. He had been trying to find this place for three hours. He couldn’t find it and he didn’t even want the extra money, but I was just the foolish foreigner and didn’t know what to do and the bellman said, just come on, you silly cab driver, take the money and go away.
But I think it was a good story because I think that is so indicative of my time in Thailand, you know, like the people are so sweet and bad things can happen to you when you travel but in this story, it was just a sweet old guy and he actually didn’t want to take anymore money from me. He didn’t want to take advantage of me. He was just disappointed that he couldn’t get me to where I wanted to go.
Greg: Did you actually get to the place you wanted to go?
Todd: Well, yeah, eventually I called my friend and they came and picked me up.
Greg: Was there a phone number on the card?
Todd: Yeah, there was.
Greg: Why didn’t you stop with the cab driver and call them?
Todd: Well, because I was given the card and they said use this card to go to this place and it was a factory and then so when I called the place they realized what was happening. Before the cab driver was calling the place and so he couldn’t find it but once there was a foreigner they put me with somebody who speaks English and it was all worked out, and I should have thought of that in the first place.
Greg: You learn from experience.

Todd: So, Conrad, you were saying that you have a grandfather and your grandfather is ninetyseven.
Conrad: That’s right.
Todd: Ninetyseven!
Conrad: That’s right Todd. I think he was born in 1910.
Todd: Man!
Conrad: Yeah, ninetyseven years old and still driving.
Todd: Wow! He’s still in good health.
Conrad: Yes, he’s very healthy, and like I said he drives. He lives by himself. My grandmother passed away a couple years ago, and yeah, he basically can do anything he wants still.
Todd: Man!
Conrad: I mean, he still loves poker. He does that probably at least once a week.
Todd: He plays poker. Wow!
Conrad: So he’s pretty sharp, still.
Todd: Does he just play for fun or does he play for money ?
Conrad: Both. But usually money. I guess I should say always money.
Todd: Always money ? Really ?
Conrad: Yeah, he likes gambling.
Todd: Well, what else can you say about your grandfather?
Conrad: Well, you know, he’s been through some tough times. During World War II he was interned along with my parents when they were babies, so he lost his… he had a business going in Stockton, California. He lost his business, his house, interned, so he made it through that. He came back out of camp and started a new business, was successful again, so I’d say he’s been through a lot but he’s made it through. He’s made it. He’s made a successful person out of himself.
Todd: So many people might not know what the internment is. Can you just explain briefly ?
Conrad: Sure that was during World War II. Some people felt that the Japanese Americans who were born and lived in Japan on the West Coast were a threat to the other people around them so they decided to intern them and put them into camps. Pretty much these camps were located in the most desolate place that could be found. Sometimes a place where they used to store horses or something, and I visited one just last winter, and yeah, in the the wintertime it’s extremely cold and they had to endure some very hard conditions for I think it was for about four years.
Todd: That’s terrible.
