Welcome to Displore and thanks for watching, in this video, we are taking you to the Northern Part of Africa and we are bringing you some lesser Known facts about one of the best countries in that part of the continent. Tunisia. Officially referred to as the Republic of Tunisia, Tunisia is one of the most beautiful country in Africa. The country got its name from its capital city Tunis which means “to lay down” in “Berber” Tunisia is bordered by Algeria to the west and south west and the Mediterrenian sea to the North and east. It gained its independence from france in march 1956 and currently has a population of about 11.8 million people and a surface area of about 163000 kilometers Square making it the 36th largest country in Africa. Tunisian Arabic, berber and French are the languages widely spoken in Tunisia with the former being the official language of the country.

Tunisia is a country with rich cultures and fascinating cuisines. About 98 percent of the Population of Tunisia is comprises of Muslims with Christianity and Judaism as the minority. Lets take a closer look at with the 10 things you didn’t know about Tunisia.
1. Tunisia has lowest Gun Ownership rate in the world
Tunisia is a peaceful and one of the safest countries in Africa. The rate of gun violence in the country is extremely low, due to stringent gun control policy by the Tunisian government. The country has a gun ownership rate of about 0.1 percent.
To put that gun control context in perspective, let’s compare Tunisia with the U.S. The rate of gun ownership in Tunisia is 0.1 per 100 residents. In the U.S., the rate is 90 per 100 residents — that’s 900 percent more guns than Tunisia. In terms of actual number of privately owned guns, Tunisia ranked 173 out of 178 countries. According to statistics listed by GunPolicy.org, a project of the University of Sydney, there are roughly 9,000 privately owned guns in Tunisia, both legally and illegally. The number of licensed firearm owners and registered firearms is 3,408. These numbers are miniscule given that the population of Tunisia is nearly 11 million.

1. Tunisia was the first Arab Country to outlaw domestic violence against Women
Domestic Violence against women has and is still very rampant in most Muslims country despite the world wide campaign to stop domestic violence against women. In 2017, Tunisia was the first Muslim country in Africa to pass a law against domestic violence on women called Law 54. Although victims of domestic violence in Tunisia are very happy about the law, they say its ineffective a perpetrators of domestic violence in Tunisia still go unpunished. However , the Tunisian Government still organize assessment meeting to make sure the law is effective.
2. Education In tunisia is mandatory for children between ages 6 to 16
Education is a high priority in Tunisia and has been for many years. The academic year runs from October to June, and the medium of education in Tunisia is Arabic.
The literacy rate in Tunisia is estimated at about 90%, this is due to the fact Education is compulsory for children from age 6 to 16. Primary Education is completely free Tunisia.
According to the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitive report, Tunisia ranks at the 17th position in the Quality of Higher Education and 21st in the category of primary Education making Tunisia of the top countries with highest Literacy rate in Africa.

3. A good number of Hollywood movies have been filmed in Tunisia
Tunisia is not only and Amazing Tourist destination it is also has amazing location for movies. There are a couple of Hollywood Blockbusters that were filmed in Tunisia Such as the Raiders of the lost Art, Jesus of Nazareth, Outside the law, The English Patient as well as many iconic scenes of the star wars franchise. Most of the Locations were these movies were filmed have become major Tourist Attractions in Tunisia.

4. Tunisia is the 9th Richest Country in Africa.
African countries are known to be poor and heavily indebted, however there are a couple of African countries that are prosperous and Tunisia happens to be one of them. The standard of living in Tunisia is relatively higher compared to those of most countries in Africa. Tunisia has a GDP of About 150B dollars and a per capita income of about 12000 dollars making Tunisia the 9th richest country on the continent.
